That is why it is called hunting ...........

If you got one every time, it would be called shooting !!!

Headed out this afternoon. Set up in a good place behind a makeshift ground blind. It was in an opening between two tree lines. I have shot 3 in the same spot over the years. But, I kept telling myself one could come over a little hill about 75 yards behind me.…….Sure enough, As I looked back towards the hill ……. Nice wide 8pt……did not even have time to get my gun on it before it was back over the hill…

But it was a good experience and a good memory… Headed out again in the morning !!!

It might be time to shoot a doe.

Had many good hunts, and some involved shooting too.

We always hunt for meat first. If it comes with a nice rack, bonus. But I wasn't willing to pass on a doe waiting for a buck that may never come.

Good luck and enjoy a safe hunt. Looking forward to your follow up report.

Thanks MJ !!!! Hoping to leave a report soon !

I am counting on the fact there have been lots of does out there. There is still a big 10pt and the Moose running around out there. But I am feeling my age and have hunted pretty hard this last 5 days or so. Hoping for a shot at a buck in the morning.

My neighbor told me to use one of his enclosed stands. He has seen several deer each day and several different bucks eariler this week. He is still waiting on a monster….

Good luck out in the deer woods Frank!

That old saying "You can't eat the antlers" is a myth that my K-9 friends have long proven to be incorrect.

You can tru again tomorrow facing the hill. Then the buck will come through the lanes. Better pack a quiet swivel chair.

The midwest weather and wind has been a terrible combination here. Deer are skittish and not traveling normal patterns or trails. I've been watching fields and crossing points that over the years have been very successful but even when deer are seen, they're acting like the Devil himself is on their tail, skirting open areas, and generally acting paranoid.

I filled a couple of 'antlerless' tags yesterday but normally would have filled the pickup bed.

I have put my self in a dilemma this year. I had planned on trying to take a deer this year with a hand gun, a 41 magnum, even got groups down to 1.5 to 2 inch at 25 yards. The problem, after taking that 8 pointer with a cross bow this year, and the little bit of deer from last year and the beef and pork, the freeze is totally full, no room left. Maybe I’ll go out with snap caps in the gun and pretend to be hunting. lol

Anyway, have fun today hunting and good luck.

Last year the deer seemed to be dumber than a box of rocks. Standing in thickets staring at us. I think we got all the Darwin award winners and what is left, if we do spot them, are moving like their tails are on fire.

ours starts in WVa on monday morning, forecast is for rain/drizzle all week mid 40's and high 20's at night, I'm to old to sit long in the rain and cold, just don't have the desire anymore. will still go out for the beer and poker, but we lost two more of my hunting buddies this year and there will only be three of us old farts left, just not the same with all the kids and grandkids nowadays they call us on hunting story lies we have repeated and grown for years………………

Up at 430, in the stand by 545. It was a nice homemade blind, comfortable with removable windows. A little hard to get into for an old fart like me. Could have shot a doe within the first 15 minutes. She kept looking back so I waited for the Buck that I assumed was following her. Sure enough, here he came, a ratty little 6pt which is not a legal buck in our county. Saw several more does, but they were all this year's models and really small. As I was checking out for the morning, that ratty little 6pt ran within 15 yards of me again. Several turkeys in the area all morning.

In the afternoon set, my bride of 43 years wanted to come along. So I suited her up in some of the hunting clothes my sons used to wear when they were in their teens. She was a real trooper, it was mid 30's and a stiff 20 mph wind with gusts upwards of 40 mph. She watched some does, turkeys and missed the yote that ran though. First time she ever sat out there with me. It was a good day together, even though we did not shoot one…

Three sets in a row for me, Thursday afternoon, this morning and this afternoon. Cold all three times. My old knees need a day off. So I will sleep in tomorrow and maybe go out in the evening… Seeing deer every set so I need to take a couple does and call it a season….
