Use Carfax? No Thank You!
Since I have a injured left leg and right arm i am pretty much restricted to the key board this AM.
On 2/17/21 a really old man backed into my drivers door in Shoprite parking lot. The truck was parked and had I been in front of door he probably would have killed me. Finally got in the loop at my body shop. Have been going to Ken for over 40 years for various things. Ken is a great guy and used all OEM parts and his work and paint match is flawless. He tied up my truck for a very long time as he had the virus and was very sick. When he finished work on the truck he took it to a nearby Chrysler dealer.to reset some codes. They entered the mileage as 49,760 instead of what I believe should have been 4,976 miles. I never saw the job ticket for the body shop at the time.
Fast forward to 12/02/2021 and i took truck to my Chevy dealer for inspection as I really like their staff even though I have a Ram now. Mileage was 6,360 miles but mechanic wrote it up as 63,599. I immediately caught it and brought it to service adviser's attention. She corrected it on computer and it went to DMV at correct 6,360 miles. But unknown to me the 63,599 miles laid in Carfax's lap festering away. They harassed me for weeks about getting this or that done. Finally I went to service manager Matt and he shut them down. Matt is a gun collector/ big time deer hunter and he won't stand for crap like that. The Chevy Dealer, my original Ram Dealer and myself all keep track of work that we do on my Ram. Why the hell do I need Carfax!!!!!!!!!!!
Last week I saw a almost carbon copy of my truck in the show room of my Ram dealer and ask salesman to run the numbers for me on the new truck. My truck was out of warranty 10 days ago. He came back with this Horrific Carfax Report with two odometer readings that were incorrect and worded Potential Odometer Rollback. Took Carfax report to big cheese and they claim it is costing me between $5,000-$6,000 on value of my truck that has accurate mileage of 23.987 miles. Waste of time to run numbers at this time. There's a lot of people out there who don't believe you don't drive much when you retired 20 years ago.
After I left Ram dealer I immediately drove to Chevy dealer and talked to Matt, the service manager. He has filed a Data Correction Request with Carfax to remove the 63,599 miles from report.
Yesterday morning I drove to Chrysler dealer in Newburgh ,NY and got in their face with job ticket that Ken in body shop found in his attic, Mileage reads 49,760 miles. They claim that they are going to file a Data Correction Request with Carfax also.
Several times in my 81 years the at fault driver has said to me "Don't get upset, no one was injured and your vehicle is fixable." Well, will it be repaired to factory condition? What about the misery with dealing with Insurance Companies, Rental Companies, Police Reports, loss of vehicle use and Yes, inaccurate Carfax Reports?
I have never sued anyone in my whole life but if this Carfax report is not fixed there is going to be hell to pay. I would never use them for anything.———————-Ray

Find a young hungry lawyer just out of school with little to do, needing favorable experience with mounds of tuition debt facing him and say, Sic'em…. sit back and watch the results.

Ray, sorry that you are experiencing this mess with Carfax.
I have seen this issue with my own Carfax report showing incorrect mileage, as well as service work both completed and not completed.
For sure that Carfax is not the final word on your vehices condition in real life.
If it is costing you money in trade in value, it can not be ignored.
Best of luck to you, hope that the situation gets quickly repaired.
What Junkballer said.
Ray, you left out some important steps, but suing is not going to help you at this stage.
The only people you should be talking to at this point are 1). a representative of YOUR insurance company, 2) the doctor in the emergency room, 3) the police department.
All the rest is just paperwork. Take care of yourself.

nmyers, Thank you. Funny i forgot about Insurance problem. They got a hold of the 63,000+ miles and i threatened them. They would not even tell me where they got the mileage from. They finally backed down and refunded $300 of my premium and corrected the declarations page. At this point i am hoping that both dealers will clean up their mess. Seems like no one checks info that is provided to Carfax. Then they pull a CYA and say Potential Odometer Rollback. The dealers know they made a mistake and are trying to help. Very hard to take back the printed words. It was just dumb luck that I happened on this inaccurate report. Seems like the real danger here is if a potential buyer for my truck gets this inaccurate report. Carfax is not God! —————————-Ray
Gotta love bureaucracy.
On the other side of this—I use CARFAX anytime I'm looking at a used vehicle. While it does cover most of the questions, there's a LOT of things not covered or revealed.
Also depends on the individual. I can't remember the last time I've taken a vehicle to a dealership FOR ANYTHING. It's certainly been at least 25 years.🙄
Carfax will share information with anybody with money. Many dealers to include new car dealers share service information with Carfax, this especially includes the tax man & insurance companies. Interesting, finding out the tax man knows more about the value of your vehicle than you do.
Dealers & others should disclose to you when they are placing information in CarFax. Anybody who sells information can't be trusted!
I had this same issue where the service center reported the wrong mileage to carfax on an oil change I had done. I didn't know about this until I went to trade the truck in and the dealer brought it to my attention because the truck had less miles showing on the odometer than what was on the carfax report. It was a mess getting it straightened out.
Mobuck, same here. Have not bought a used car in over 30 years and then only if i knew owner and cars history. Always do my own work unless inspections or warranty work. Then it goes to dealer. ——————-Ray
