my friend brought one over yesterday to see if i could find out anything about it. Its 38 special, pinned barrel (if that matters?), looks about new except for some wear around the crown. 3inch barrel. I saw a big range of prices on the auction, but I guessed about 300. Sound right? Are there any website to look up a serial number to see when it was made? Thanks.

The -1 means it has the first modification(s) or changes in design or features to the original model (no dash). In the case of the Model 36, it means it has a 3" barrel. The original (no dash) M-36 had a 2 inch barrel.
I beg to differ with you sir, at one time I owned 2 original model 36's with 3" barrel, one square butt, one round. Somebody please kick me for selling them at shooter prices.
