I'm a little stumped on this gun. My friend just showed me this nice old pistol that has been in the family for years. Being interested in old firearms I started researching it. My problem is the serial number. I called her and she read off the serial number as 810858. That appears way to high for a Colt New Service. When I plug that number into the colt website, it does not list a new service revolver. I told her it should be 300000 or below. I'll have to go over and look myself but she said it was pretty clear.
The gun is beautiful. It is Nickel and in very good shape. It appears to have the original old black plastic grips with the "COLT" on the upper portion of the grips.
Am i correct on the serial number being to high? Please help. Thanks.

I forgot to ask. What do you think about the nickel finish? Could it be original? Does that make it rare? I'll try and get some pictures the next time I see it.
Best to post quality photos. If it isn't a factory original finish? There are usual telltale giveaways, that indicate that it's been refinished. If it's factory original, and in at least Very Good condition. It would be worth quite a bit, to a collector.
