Cherryville, NC has a tradition that on new years eve a couple of groups show up at folk's homes, recite an old German chant and then fire off all of their black powder rifles/muskets.
Something about driving off evil spirits and witches. Tradition goes back to the 1700's, some of the muskets used date back to the 1700's and have been in use since.
Things get sort of interesting when folks mix black powder and white likker. Usually someone gets hurt, usually flash burns, sometimes an old musket comes apart. Hope no one gets hurt or worse this year.
Can hear them banging away from here.
