A Gunbroker forum 'smiley' inquisition

Alright, I think its time we took a look at our little smiley friends, those pictographic ambassadors who can make a dull or abrupt post worthwhile. Unfortunately, some of these smileys leave a little to be desired in terms of communication effectiveness. First, though, lets take a look at the whole family:
[:)][:D][8D][:I][:p][}:)][;)][:o)][B)][8][:(][8)][:0][:(!][xx(][|)][:X][^][V][?]
Ok, at first glance a wide range of emotions can be conveyed using these tiny faces. We have happiness, sadness, anger, confusion, embarassment, and surprise. Not bad.
However, some of these smileys don't quite cut it. Lets begin with the most henious offender:
[8] - An eight ball. Ok. Not sure what this is supposed to communicate, as this is not a face and conveys no emotion. My best guess is that this is supposed to represent someone winning something, perhaps a forum argument? Even if thats correct, its an obscure reference that not everyone would understand. Maybe this is supposed to represent the 8-ball of crack the forum designer was smoking when he chose this as a smiley?
Next up is this little-used grey smiley:
[|)] - The reason this smiley fails is purely aesthetic. It is supposed to convey "sleepiness," but the anime-style upturned eyes convey contentment or mild amusement rather than sleepiness. A couple of Z's over the head would immediately clear this up, but I guess the designer fell asleep before he could add those.
Next is this peculiar little fellow:
[8)] - Meant to convey "shyness," this actually looks like a sibling to this smiley: [:)]. I'll just say this: shy people usually don't have a big grin on their faces, which is why this smiley fails.
Next up is this one:
[B)] - For the longest time I could not figure out what this was. At first glance it appears to be a part-robot smiley like a Borg out of Star Trek. This of course is an absurd thing; I mean, what emotion is conveyed with a half-robot smiley? When I discovered that rolling over the smiley's button popped up a little tooltip that described the smiley, I immediately found that this is meant to imitate a black eye, presumably one obtained after a fight. The problem is that this looks nothing like a black eye. For some reason it has a sharp 90 degree angle (black eyes tend to be round or splotchy). Also, the smiley shows no further sign of injury, which makes the whole "black eye" concept hard to pick up on.
Next:
[:o)] - I hate clowns.
Then there's this one:
[}:)] - Its meant to look like a devil, but to me it looks like a crotchety red-faced person. I think its the mouth that does it... instead of an evil grin it has something of a frown. Also, the "horns" are not pronounced enough (and theres no tail!).
There's also this terrifying creature:
[:X] - If this thing wanted to give me a kiss, I'd quickly be running the other way. The beady eyes and hideously deformed mouth make it look like a pink rat with a pink nose, or even an opposum. Truly dreadful artwork.
Finally, theres this one:
[?] - Dont get me wrong, this "smiley" is perfectly clear in what it communicates. The problem is, its not a face. Its a question mark. I already have a question mark key on my keyboard, so the QUESTION is: why do I need this smiley?
Alright, that about covers the bad smileys. Some could be deleted, most just need aesthetic changes. I must say that this forum is missing one very important smiley, that being the one for sarcasm. For example, this one conveys sarcasm very well: . I petition the forum admin to look into adding this smiley, for as we all know, this forum is absolutely dripping in sarcasm. Too many times ive looked for the "sarcastic" smiley only to be left wanting.

I always thought this represented the saying, "I'm behind the 8-ball," which also means, "I have no options," or more colloquially, "I'm f****d."

Gotta disagree there. That looks very obviously like a black eye to me.

I enjoy that devil, and it's so aptly used on this forum, so often.quote:

Totally agreed.quote:

It's just a little more emphatic than a regular old question mark.quote:

A sarcastic smiley would be useful, but I just see rolling eyes in the one you've offered. To me that communicates exasperation, but not sarcasm. I agree that a sarcasm smiley would be good....I'm just not sure what it would look like.
Awesome.
I like this one.
does this count as a smilie?
yep.
