Vietnam: The War For Rubber?

Got to talking with an old Vietnam vet tonight about the USA,s war in Vietnam. He said the war was all about the rubber trees. That is to say that is was fought to keep the rubber out of Russian hands via North Vietnam. He further stated that are withdrawl was directly coordinated with the introduction of affordable synthetic rubber in the US marketplace. The war was fought for rubber? Chime in knowledgeable vets.

It's not what you know that gets you in trouble, it's what you know that just ain't so!
A dead intruder cannot testify against you in a court of law!
If they're still moving, put another round in them!

I am not the history buff that many here are so I am sure they will set the record straight.

May I refer my Brothers-in-Arms, who have also been puzzled for a long time, to you so they can be brought up to speed by your wisdom?

To begin with, we were responding to an aid request from a country with whom we had a legal mutual defense treaty.

WW2 was fought in the Indo-China theater to remove raw materials from the Axis. Rubber was vital to the Japanese, but we had synthetics by that time.
Yes, there were rubber plantations in Viet Nam in the 60's. Yes, they produced rubber. Mostly they were French owned.
NO! Rubber wasn't a motive for the war.

U.S. Embassy in Vietnam is trying to ease tensions betweens us, costing us jobs....not that that is a shock to anyone.
Robo don't worry 'bout it. You weren't even alive during the Vietnam War and these guys are more than happy to give you info on the War. Everyone has stories to tell.
My heros have always killed cowboys.
Raw materials were, no doubt, at the forefront of some very petty people's minds. Others coducted the war to prevent the spread of communism. And others felt that since we had a defense treaty with South Vietnam, defending them was the only honorable thing to do regardless of how corrupt their regime was.
There was no single reason for the Vietnam War. A lot of folks with a lot of reasons made a lot of decisions that came to one conclusion: a long war and a lot of lives lost.
On the rubber deal, all I can say here is that I spent some time in Dalat up in the high country, French locals were never bothered that I heard about. Of course unlike other areas of the country, the plantations there were seldom hit. Seems there was some unwritten agreement, but the same can be said for the area around Vung Tau as well. R&R area for both sides!
If you want to see a pretty good movie about the Viet Nam War (when I was there), see if you can rent "Go Tell The Spartans", which stars Burt Lancaster. It was made during the war and has little of the political correctness of some of the other movies. You will probably have a hard time finding it.
As far as the politics of the war - there are volumes written about it. Remember this, always - the American GIs never lost a SINGLE battle during the war.
EMM - You put it well.
