Because mankind is just one disaster away from chaos. As civilized as we think we are, when panic sets in regarding survival, even the best people can turn into animals. And the worst people will be the first to prey on the others.
I was watching the movie "Contagion".

My secondary MOS in the Army was an NBC Specialist. (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical warfare.)
Biohazards scare me much more than the threat of a Nuclear attack.
Yes, I agree - a breakdown in Society requires pre-planning.
SONNY: Listen, I want somebody good and I mean very good...to plant that gun. I don't want my brother coming out of that toilet with just his **** in his hands, alright?
Just another reason there is a need for guns.
no place to hide...i do not know of ONE who has a defensible home /location to live and grow food if SHTF.....grocery stores would be wiped clean in one day..pharmicies, fuel, even walfart..phhffffttt
You need to visit our neck of the woods. Curvy * 5 mile road into our steep mountain lined holler. Steep ridges on one side, deep creek/gorge on the other. Lots of bottlenecks and choke points. Neighbors/Friends/Buddy's and I will drop a bunch of trees at the entrance. Most, if not all who live here, chose this location for a reason. Most are highly prepared. Quite a few of us are prior Military. (Combat Medics with 101st, NBC specialists, 11Bravos, etc. etc.) Our little neighborhood is good. We have a plan, are mutually cooperative, and pretty darned prepared.

Hey, if a Nuke goes up, We are all not going to have to worry about it. It'll be over. Other scenarios will be much more drawn out. YVMD.
All firearms are "sporting" firearms.
There are no "assault weapons" unless the specific, individual firearm is used to assault someone .... like the black powder, single shot pistol John Wilkes Booth used to 'assault' President Lincoln.
Perfect!
