Trapped on the firing range

A local indoor range/gun shop recently had an incident that trapped shooters in the range. The range has a mantrap that uses electromagnetic locks that prevent both doors from opening at the same time, to keep the noise on the range from disturbing those in the gun shop. They had a dumpster fire behind the building, & someone pulled the fire alarm. All the shooters headed for the door, but the folks holding the inner door open kept the outer door from unlocking. A few folks started to panic, until they figured out that those in the rear had to close the inner door & wait.
These locks should disconnect when the fire alarm sounds, & they should also have a "press to exit" button within 5' of the door. In most cases, they should also have a motion sensor that releases the lock. We're seeing lots of them in stores, office buildings, & schools. Lots of them are not installed according to code. If you see something that doesn't look right, it would be a good idea to ask your fire dept or building inspector to check it out.

The "push to exit" buttons on 'inside' to defeat the locking system sounds reasonable.
