Personally, I'm not crazy about the AR's missing the dust cover and forward assist. Are they needed? No, probably not. But, to me, one of the neat things about an AR is how it looks. It really is a timeless rifle, IMO.
I bet this High Standard's assembled from good parts. Now, I wonder, which parts? [:D]
This seems to have most of what a person would want, for about $800.00:

hi-standard of today is not the same as it once was, assets and name was purchased in 93, i would not hold anything in high regards unless it was made in connecticut
For me, I don't like the cuts on the barrel that the M4 has. Since I'm never going to use an M203, the cuts are useless, and they bug me. But, this is me, and I'm sure that there are other folks that like them.
I really like carbines but, for me, it's either the pencil barrel, or, HB.
Smith is building some great stuff and obviously the warranty is fantastic. I'm lefty and no issues shooting it. Very accurate too.

I checked PSA they're sold out of most of their rifles right now.
Well if you have a Dunhams Sports nearby their advertising Bushmasters for $750.
EDIT And thank you for not looking for a CHEAP ONE.[;)]
Wal Mart is offering a DPMS for $597 at the rockwall store, if your store is higher, just tell them to price match the rockwall store, zip code 75087. They should wrap it up for ya.

That's all well and good but all WalMart stores do not sell AR's. They sure as hell don't sell them here.
2) Stag Model 2 or 3 Under $799
3) Olympic Plinker Under $750
4) Delton
or build on from a kit
