Well I will say that I paid more down in principle than I brought home... But that is my model . Buy distressed propertys, fix them up myself, get a bank to mortgage them, get a tenant to pay rent, and take rent to bank to pay down the mortgage. Pretty simple really.

So I may not "take home" much but in 20 to 30 yrs... I sure hope to

Good for you I will redefine "what you brought home" as W-2 wages or 1099 incomes

I am awaiting a promised $ 12 million from Mr. Mutawabe of the Nigerian National Bank.

Only $ 11.95 million will be taxable, as I have had to transfer $ 50,000.00 to Mr. Mutawabe's account so that he can process the remainder.

According to my tax attorney, if I receive the balance before April 1, I can file it in 2011.

The bottom line is what matters...

I know people who make lots of $ but spend it all.

And I know people who make little, save most and over time become pretty well off.

This is a marathon not a sprint, I think that the real measure is how much you have in a net at the end of the yr.

Important net contents are Roth Ira contributions, reduced mortgage balances, and reducing the higher of any debt. (CC , etc)

... Oh yes and those prized firearms, They are an investment RIGHT??

Less than I made in 2010, which was less than I made in 2009 which was only slightly more than I made in 2008 due to changing jobs in June. One of the reasons i left my previous company in 2011 is that they "rewarded" exceptional performance by cutting pay by 42%, moving me out of state with no assistance or notice and changed my work week to 50hrs, and gave me more responsibility/workload, while the guys that did nothing got promoted (yeah I'm bitter about that), also NO pay increase COLA or otherwise (yup bitter about that as well)

Sorry for the rant, pay is a sore subject

2011 was the first year in the last 25 years that ended for me at less than six figures. I am not exactly hurting, but there has been a definite down turn.

Don't get too caught up on dollar numbers. Your $69K might sound like a good income but here in SoCal you and your wife would be a little better than middle class and if you had any brats; well you probably would be just getting by on that. A retired fellow with his home paid for, kids out of the house, and living in a state with no income tax and paying a low property tax rate will be getting along a lot better on forty grand a year than any of my neighbors are doing earning $100K.

I also vividly remember a few years ago when this same question came up and former member kristov gave us an extremely honest answer: He and his wife were pulling in close to $1 million per year. The members did not look on this amount of income kindly and in fact a few were down right hostile about his level of success. Better to keep the gross income line on your 1040 Form to yourself.

Haven't got any of my W-2's yet but I guess we are in the same boat I made a little less then you and my wife made a little more then yours. That doesn't go very far here in the rust belt.

SOmeone wise here once said the secret is having 3 jobs.

A lot of truth in that.

So I got a 12% pay raise for the day job with an 8% pay reduction....go figure. Then I survived a "reorganization" just before Christmas.

My first side job paid out OK. Invested a larger portion in repairs and still made a profit with the farm. Rolled it over into 2012 with the final sales then bought a 11 year old truck. If you ain't making money farming, you're gardening. Well, last year I was farming.First time in three years a profit was made.

Third job was a cash job with a lot of expenses. Moved away from growing another commodity and towards refining one. Now that some states like Michigan and California made the product more culturally acceptable, profits have taken a nose dive. Switching to refining is proving to be a better option, but start up expenses were tough this year.

Fortunately, many of the expenses can be applied to the farm. Sales look to be good for 2012 but it's getting harder and harder to find inputs for the refining process. Anhydrous ammonia is getting harder and harder to find out of season, not to mention the ephedrine. We'll have to apply more anhydrous this spring. Spring will be a busy time in both businesses. I'll probably have to get back into the cattle business this year...you can medicate cows with ephedrine.

The day job is good at the factory. The farming is an excellent way to distribute expenses, and the real money is made in the cash job.

Looking forward to 2012, can I write off a camper as a business expense?

I also need to start looking at rental properties. The mexicans at the factory have been using this side business for years until they got into some governmental regulatory issues with their Mexican imports.

So how much did I ring home? Yeah I cringe when my wife asks this question. Take home pay isn't ever that easy to figure out with constant sales and expenses.

Not much. Every spare dime past my living expenses is going toward my farm improvements (new fence ain't cheap) or new rental homes I have been buying.
