Thanks, remoks.I do feel sorry for the loss of a bond people once had for each other.I think it was a better time when people were able to look to the wellfare of eachother without the worry of a lawsuit. This is but one example of why our nation will fail. You have seen hear in this thread the careless of of people who post garbige.Lifes a *,I pray you never have to ponder weather your family member or loved one may have been saved or comferted by a stranger holding his hand in the last moments on earth.
bawannabuck

Calrugerfan, perhaps its my sence of loss after 12 years of my hound jess.Maybe my bond with her after giving two of her first litter mouth to mouth. To me you sound just like someone from cali.RUN dont walk to your nearest lawyer and sue sue.I am shure in cali you could find a laywer to aviod charges, and even make you some cash.Is cash a replacment for doing right?
You're still not listening. Charges are the LEAST of my concern. The safety of ME and MINE is more important to me than YOUR FEELINGS. It has nothing to do with me being from California. People in general suck now and they don't react well. Did you read the story that 76k20 posted? His story is the EXACT reason that I don't care about YOUR feelings when it's my wife or daughter alone. I even told you that I would go back with them to talk to the owner, but they are not going alone. Would you let YOUR wife or daughter go up to some stranger's house and tell them something that will almost definitely upset them?
And just to clarify, I'm a dog lover. I have 2 dogs and they are like my kids (since I don't have any). I have also hit a dog before. It didn't die. I turned around as soon as I could. The idiot owners were outside letting the dog run loose on a street with a 55 mph speed limit. When I got back to them, I asked if the dog was ok (it wasn't a direct hit). Their response, "Oh don't worry, this isn't the first time he's been hit."
Let me reiterate. I'll do the right thing, but in a controlled and safe environment. Stop trying to use California as a scapegoat for not being willing to accept the truth. The fact is that a lot of people don't react well and I won't put my family's safety in jeopardy over a dog.
Get your story straight[V]
The daughter part was hypothetical as noted in a different post. The wife part is not.
It doesn't change the facts. I would not let ANYBODY in my family go and approach some stranger without me present. Safety is my main concern. Not everybody is as understanding as bawannabuck claims to be (although its hard to be understand when you can't comprehend) and they may react poorly. If you guys want to let YOUR family be put in that situation, go ahead, but as for mine, I will do everything I can to keep them safe.
I would still take them back to the owner, but they would not be stopping to do it alone. The world has gotten too evil for that. I'm not saying that everybody is evil, but so far, I haven't seen anybody with signs up that denote whether they are evil or not.
So I pose this question to all of you that think I'm being a jerk about this. Would you want your teenage daughter approaching a stranger by herself to tell him something that is sure to upset him? Or would you want to be with her to protect her?

I would want MY teenage daughter to stop (as the law dictates), use her CELL PHONE and call the police (as the law dictates). And wait until the police arrive to take care of it so she wouldn't get hurt like you have hypothesized, just as I taught all my kids to do.... I would never, ever in a million years advocate that she become a common criminal by committing a felony hit and run........ This is a fact
If while she is waiting for the police, should someone pose a clear and present danger to her, then and only then would I say that she should leave the seen of an accident, call the police and explain why she had to leave and let the police deal with that
Of course this is what I have taught her and all my kids to do because their mother and I have raised then properly and to obey the law so they aren't common criminals like some are
If you want to teach your children to break the law, that's on you. In my opinion, I feel sorry for your offspring for the lack of proper upbringing that everybody needs so they might avoid becoming common criminals and spend their life's in and out of jail.... That is again in my opinion
1. It is NOT a felony to leave the scene when you hit a dog.
2. Maybe you just have better cell phone coverage than we do, but here, we don't have coverage in areas like bawannabuck described his house.
3. A lot can happen in the hour or more that a cop will take to respond IF he even responds at all.
I wouldn't change a thing about how I tell my kids to respond. Hopefully yours will be safe doing what you've instructed them to do. That's your business though. I just hope that we never have to say "Sorry for your loss" because you get on here and tell us that your daughter was killed (or worse) after stopping because she hit a dog.
I've explained my reasons, you've explained yours. I know that you are not going to change MY mind and I doubt that I will change yours. I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree at this point about which is the more safety conscience choice.
Hitting an animal is not the same as hitting a person.
The animal's owner, if he can be identified, is liable for damages to the vehicle. The presumption is that domestic animals do not belong on the road, but pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles do.
I have stopped after hitting an animal, and I have also not stopped, but I did make sure the animal was dead. I have encountered reasonable people, and I have met with one who reacted out of emotion and grief. The latter type of encounter, especially on the side of a two-lane blacktop in the middle of nowhere, with no other traffic, at night, is no fun. By the time a "clear and present danger" is identified, it may be too late to avoid a very uncomfortable situation.
Call the police? I never heard of such, not in Texas anyway, unless someone hits a cow and totals a car. As I stated, the law presumes that a domestic animal does not belong in the road. I would wager that if one were to run over Fluffy, stop and call police, he might be waiting a long time for someone to show up.
