I think the reason the subject of Slavery was taken out of the Constitution was because of having enough on their Plate with the Revolution about to start.

Trooperchin, I am a proud member of the Fincastle Rifles, here in S.W.Va. I have enjoyed the fellowship of the proud descendants of men who gave up all they valued in goods and family to fight for the right to govern themselves, free from intervention of a jealous neighbor. We have many black members and one of our most distinguished members was a black minister whose recent death saddend all our members, we have native american members and members from several foreign countrys, all We wish to do is honor our heritage, not deny someone else theirs, be nice if our anti-battle flag brethren felt the same.
You can form your own opinion, but I think slvery should have gone away along time before it did. Unfortunately it didn't and is the cause of alot of the racial tension we see today. In my opinion, if slavery would have disappeared earlier, so would the tension of our present time and day. Damn shame our past is a shady as it is but it is our past. It's not like history will repeat itself on the slavery issue. No way in hell.

What I find more interesting than the Arkansas military folk who went and fought for the Union, was the desertion crisis in the Union that was a result of Lincolns proclomation. At least 200,000 union soldiers deserted after the proclomation. Sure seems weird that if these Union soldiers were fighting to "free the slaves" they would haul * out of there after Lincolns proclamation. In addition to the 200,00 deserters, another 120,000 union citizens avoided fighting all together via conscription, and another 90,000 fled to Canada to avoid fighting for the Union-One would think with such a noble cause as freeing the slaves, these Northern Abolitionist would have joined in the fight. Maybe the original intent wasnt freeing the slaves after all. If you read the editorials of the time in the Northern papers, the general consensus at the start of the secession was to let the South leave-until it was realized by the North how much revenue would be lost-then they changed their tune and wanted to "preserve the Union".
It was mentioned that other countries abolished Slavery. Somewhere in the neighborhood of twenty countries abolished slavery between 1800-1850. Not one of these countries needed war to abolish slavery. Most of them "bought" the slaves freedom, by compensating slave owners for their slaves. The governments actually paid the slave owners to let the slaves go. One would think, that if the motives of the North was about freeing the slaves, they could have avoided war all together, and initiated an emancipation scheme that resembled what other countries did with respect to freeing slaves. Would have cost a lot less money than a war to "buy" emancipation, and would have certainly resulted in less death......But if peaceful emancipation occured, the North would not have gotten what they were really interested in-which was domination of the Southern states, and southern money.

Salzo- Maryland is not a Northern state. Maryland lies South of the Mason Dixon line which delineates North from South & was a "neutral state" during the civil war.
Saxon- There were many kinds of Desertions(& AWOL's). Many of them came when various armies came close to an individuals farm or home. They were temporary in most cases & tolerated by Officers. In my own relatives diaries he speaks of this as commonplace. He also states that this very rarely happened during a battle's.

Thanks for the geography lesson-but I think it was clear that when I refered to Maryland as a "northern" state, I was refering to its status as a "union" state during the war, and not its relationship to the Mason-Dixon line.

Salzo- To clarify, it was not so much a geography lesson as it was to establish where Maryland was physically during the civil conflict. It's important to know that with Maryland being the border state to the North these politicians had extreme pressure placed upon them. The politicians declared Maryland with the Union but a neutral State. The people of Maryland declared otherwise with many individuals joining the South armies. Maryland was not an industrial state but a farming state & it was not to the advantage of the people to side with the North. Does this sound familiar? Politicians not supporting the people they were sworn to represent.
Salzo-
Maryland was only a northern state because Lincoln held the major cities hostage so the govenor (sp?) coudnt vote to seceed. More Marylanders fought for the south than for the north.

Who cares anymore?! We are one nation under(insert what you wish) arent we?
The south aint perfect but where else can you get good grits? The north is full of cranky mean people but where else can you get good clam chowder? Both sides have faults, niether is perfect, never was never will be.
The flag is a battle flag, period, nothing more, nothing less. What does it stand for? It stands for a group of people who fought and died for something they believe(ed) in, no matter what it was. The flag is a part of American history, you can't change it so don't try. The problem is too many people look for "offending" things and try to change them, it is personal. Look at the deal with the national anthem, sorry to inform some of you but GOD has been a part of this country for a very long time and I don't think a couple of liberal californian pukes are going to take him away from us. Instead of looking over the fence and complaining about what the other guy is doing maybe you should look in your own yard first. You may find something offensive about something I like, but I can find offensive stuff about you also.
Trooperchin- You have no argument from me on Maryland. If you want to see the greatest example of suspension of the constitution, one need look no further than Maryland during the civil war.
State legislators in Maryland who were suspected of having confederate symathies, or had thoughts of secession were arrested, as were several newspaper publishers.
One instance had 10 legislators who were elected in a special election to fill vacancies were immediately arrested after being elected.
In addition to stifling the state legislator, free elections were interfered with to the extent that those who wished to vote for "confederate sympathizers", were denied sufferage by bayonet wielding union soldiers.
Some would argue that without all of the unconstitutional acts committed in MD, MD would have seceeded. However, in a declaration that the legislator produced, they announced that the union was in fact commiting unconstitutional atrocities, against the seceeding states and Maryland, but at the same time professed their loyalty to the union. Those poor Maryland legislators actually thought that the constitution was binding with respect to how the Union would act. They did not realize that constitutional restraints meant nothing to Lincoln and his army.

Or did they? The North claims to have been supporting the South ever since.
