My German Shepard jumped on one of my granddaughters and she had to have 13 stitches. My dog is no more. I had him for 9 years and he was always good. It just takes a second. The hurt last a lot longer. Don

    +1

Did she do anything to provoke the attack? Cassidy was bitten by our oldest lab twice when she was younger, but she provoked the attacks...and the dog only gave a warning nip.

I am sooo sorry to hear about what you are going through. I hope she isn't afraid of dogs because of what happened. I had a neighbor when I was younger that was afraid of all dogs.....but I think it had to do with her nut-job mother. Every time a dog came up her Mom would make such a big deal.....and she said it was because the girl was afraid. The Mom would run outside and YELL...."Sharon!!! Do you see that dog coming!!!! You see it!!! WAAAAAY over there....!" Of course, Sharon would run inside....nearly in tears before she made it to the door.

    I never understood that lady.

I know you will miss your dog. I can't imagine what that is like. We have had Purdy 9 years and it would just tear me up to have to put her down. I know if something like that happened I would do the same. I feel for you.

Sorry to hear about that. That's double rough. I hope there is no permanent harm to the granddaughter. It's hard losing a good dog.

Oh, lord, don. I can't imagine how terrible you feel. My youngest grandaughter is 4 and about eye level with my aussie. I always have that fear when she comes over. I try to put them up, but they come unannounced sometimes. I believe many good dogs just don't like kids. That's often their downfall.
I wished there was something I could do. Wounds will heal, but a broken heart....[:(]

She will turn out fine. Sorry you had to put your friend down. My son got attacked by a neighbors dog when he was 7 y/o. Got between 400-500 stitches in his face. He is now one of the biggest dog lovers there is.

I'm sorry to hear that Don. One of the hardest things to do is put an animal down, no matter what the reason. Hopefully your granddaughter won't be afraid of dogs because of this incident.

I do not know the circumstance that was involved Don, but putting the dog down may have been a little hasty. When I got my first boxer 4 years ago my middle son was 5 the youngest son was 1. It was the day after Christmas and I gave the dog a bone from the prime rib dinner at my father's house the night before. The baby was crawling around and I was trying to keep my eye on him, the 5yo started trying to take the bone thinking it was a toy. I warned the boy to stop playing with the bone and quickly went back to the baby. Next thing I heard was a growl and screaming. The dog swiped my son's face and caught him with his dew claw. Cut his eyebrow and the top of his ear. Went to the ER for stitches. My son was surprisingly calm and didn't cry at all durring this process. The Dr. asked what happenned and I told him the story and asked if he wanted a dog. He asked why. I told him that I could not have a dog that would do this to my child. He told me it wasn't the dogs fauls and pointed out that I was the dummy that gave the dog the bone without knowing how he would react around the children with it. LOng story short, 4 years later and he has been one of the absolute best dogs I have ever had and not another incedent. My son is not afraid of dogs and I now own 2 more boxers. No more bones for Buster though... I am sorry for your loss and do hope your grandaughter heals fine.

You say the dog "jumped" on your grand daughter...was it in play? Or was it an attack??? My dog and I were playing and she gave me a 12" long scratch down my arm that was pretty nasty but it was in play and she was not being aggressive...I did not even yell at her because we were playing and it was an accident. I hope you did not have your dog destroyed over an accident...why didn't you try to find a new home for the dog without young ones around? Its really none of my business anyway, your dog, your decision, just giving my opinion, no offense meant.

Not always I got attacked by a dog at a young age and remain afraid today of large dogs
Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!
