naming The Son

edited September 2011 in General Discussion
as you may or may not be aware, The Wife is pregnant and due on or about October 31.

This will be our first, and we haven't decided on a name yet and the pressure is on.

As such, I've decided to crowd source this issue with the geniuses that occupy GB.

His middle name will be Michael and the last name (which I shudder to reveal to some of the members here) will be Hartmann.

Here is the list so far:

Erich
Harrison
Sherman
Spenser
Connor
Grant
Phillip
Hamilton
Archer
Axl
Norrin

(there may be others that I'm forgetting that I'll add periodically.)

What say you?

Good thing he's not the inspiration for it.

If you are asking input for your childs name on GB you are a loser,seriously..../if she delivers on 10/31 I would name the kid Halloween Michael Hartmann[;)] He could just go by "H" the rest of his life.....my two cents...reloader44mag

I can't think of Axl without thinking of the front man for G&R. Which would be a disqualifier for me, personally.

I like Phillip because of the historical significance.

what about taking your first name ???

My suggestion would be to name him after either your or your wife's grandparents or parents, that will eliminate buyer's remorse later when you name him after someone else and find out they were really an *.

Here's my advice, for what it's worth...

I suggest you stick to a name that will suit him well later in life so that it does not impede his chances to make a good living.

(As an aside......I read a couple years ago where some idiot named his kid Adolph Hitler Jones or some dam thing. Walmart refused to even make the kid a birthday cake. Too wierd.)

Some Christian or Anglo Saxon type name, without sounding too wierd (Ezkiel or Noah, for instance are out), such as James, Joseph, Matthew, William, Francis(male), Frances(female), John, etc. The full name should flow well when stated. For instance, James Michael Hartmann doesn't sound bad.

I like the idea of naming the child after a close member of the family, as long as the name is a conventional one.

Obviously some of these crazy made-up names like Linnerd Jabeel Washington would eventually lead to long prison terms.

Anyway, you could consult the web. I know AOL dot com often has these articles about baby names. I know you can find plenty of suggestions there.

Hope this gives some help or insight.

With Hartmann as the blood line, any ties to the aviator? I noticed you posted 'Erich' at the top...

    enquiring mind, here.

I agree. Eric is the standard spelling. He'll spend his whole life correcting people and documents if you add an "h".

    PS: Lose "Sherman".

With whatever name you decide, please pick one where everyone can spell it without having to ask how to. It will be much easier on the kid for the rest of his life. Just my two cents.

My wife and I think Erich, Spencer, or Conor would be really good names. My wife thinks the above posters are, and I quote

"men posting manly advice, I vote you take it from a woman, non traditional spellings are perfectly fine and its totally ok to ask opinions on gunbroker, just be prepared for the responses you may receive. If you need to "spend some time with him" after he is born to decide on a name thats ok too, my brother didnt have a name until two days after he left the hospital and I think legally you have ten days. As far as naming him after a relative or grandparent, that only works if they dont have stupid, rather, old-fashioned names...for instance my husband and I would have named our son after my husbands grandfather, but his first and middle name were harold devillers...no offense to any harolds out there, but it just was too old fashioned for us...and if you dont like the name, why would name your child after someone whose name you dont particularly like? And finally, as far as what will suit him later in life...how can you possibly know what will suit him as an adult...i hated my name for a long time...and unless you name your kid something like my grandfather (Teddy Ray) you can't know how it will suit him. If the nickname/full name isn't something cuddly and cute (like Teddy Ray) I'm sure it will suit him just fine. Just my two cents as a woman/wife/mom who considered all the above posts when naming our 2 kids..."

So...thats what my mrs. has to say....the stuff above the quotes is all I had to say, and that I think if you go with Erich you should drop the h unless it has a historical significance.

Don't give him the same name as the dog.
Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

    Cameron
    Cody
    Ian
    Monte
    Kelly

I would have suggested Mickael, but you've chosen that for a middle name. Always consider the following:

    1. What will people call him? Nicknames, contractions, etc. Cam, Kel, Mike, etc. A name with more than two syllables will be shortened by those close to him.

    2. How do all three names sound together? Do they flow? Examples: John Cameron Swayze, Thomas Alva Edison, etc.

Enjoy, and God bless all three of you.

Every body is naming their kids Conner and other modern sissy names. Pick something that is cool but older; Gary, Clarence, Hoy, Thaddeus, anything but Conner..... Norrin is cool!

Steer clear of Dayjohn, Plaxico and other numb-nuts stuff.

I have also read a couple "baby name" articles that suggest giving a middle name of a color, place, season, weather condition (snow, rain, cloudy, etc.), a topographical feature (ocean, mountain, etc.),an American Indian name, such as Apache, Sioux, Cheyenne, Crow, Blackfoot, Shoshone, etc., a constellation (Orion?), or something else unusual.

On the other hand you could name your son after a gun, such as Colt, Winchester, Wesson, Mauser, Springfield, Glock, MaDeuce, Garand, M16.....anything but Taurus [:D]

Oh yeah......I suggest you listen very attentively to your wife' ideas. Unless the name she wants really rubs you the wrong way, might be better to go with that.

My wife and I have decided on Connor for our son, who will arrive in January.

I'm devastated that his name fails to meet your requirements for manliness, I don't know if I'll be able to sleep tonight.
