Yep. My middle daughter was dating a guy who's stepfather "ate" his Brazilian 12g in the back seat of his 1978 Chevy wagon in the parking lot of a local mall. He had gone to my local gunshop and my friend who owns the shop refused to sell him a gun as he could tell something wasn't "right" but he went to another shop and got the gun and a box of shells. The family had no money to bury him so I struck a deal....got his gun, the box of shells with only one gone, his Chevy wagon (cleaned up nice...except when it got warm), his jon boat and a really nice cabinet. The shotgun had a little "stuff" near the muzzle but the rest was fine....barely used. In return I gave them enough to get him cremated. My daughters refused to ride in the Chevy AT ALL and always called it the "deathmobile." I finally sold it about ten years ago...still runnin' Still have the gun and shells.
So good of you not to take advantage of them in their time of need. Your parents must be very proud of you.
Perhaps you might hold your criticism if you knew the rest of the story. The family came to ME with the deal...they had NO money at all to bury the guy and my daughters boyfriend at the time (his stepfather) approached me to help them which I did. They did not want anything that the guy owned for another reason which I can't go into here...the family just wanted to put him in the ground and I helped them with the problem. Being a gunguy I wanted the gun which they were happy to get rid of. And, yes, my parents, long gone now, were very proud of their WV boy thank you, as I was of them.
I don't understand where I was criticizing you. I merely pointed out that you got a shotgun, a box of shells, a good car, a boat, and a nice cabinet for the $1000 you gave the family. Where is the criticism?
Sure, guns are tools. The "difference" is, they're tools whose ultimate purpose is to kill - more efficiently than with a club, a rock, or what have you. That's the big reason for responsible gun ownership, and to acknowledge the depth of that responsibility.
In Virginia City, Mt., people flock to peer at a beam in an old building. Why? Because five "road agents" were hung all at once from it some 150 years ago, before the building was finished. If you don't think some "gravitas" attends any item which was instrumental in taking a life, you're in denial. Mind, to run screaming from the room is a pretty unbalanced mind-set too.
And here I thought it was the bullets that did the actual killing part.
Some will die in hot pursuit
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain
I collect original generation Colt percussion revolvers, including a Texas Paterson that was purchased from the State of Texas in 1851 by a sheriff in West Texas who became a Confederate Captain of Cavalry under General Hood in the Civil War and carried the pistol at his side during the War. In addition, I own several revolvers known to have been used in the Civil War, including an M1861 Colt Navy that was part of the first navy contract and shipped to the NY Navy Yard in 1861 and subsequently shipped to Admiral Farragut's staff, and was known to be carried by a Naval Officer during the Battle of Mobile Bay.
I also own an original Walker that was issued and used during the war with Mexico.
So, do you think any of these guns took a life?
