This is the last straw, I'm done dealing with this
sounds to me the dog was abused in the past so if you are hitting the dog it will only make matters worse you can work this dog out mine was like yours when i recued him.you need to be loud and firm with him make no aggressive actions to it.praise him alot let him know that he is loved.give him treats by hand ,let him eat out of your hand, dont raise a fist on him.if he is bad i used a spray bottle w/ water and tobasco sause and i would spray my dog when he did something bad,he now is loving and non aggressive towards me,it will take a awhile and some patience but you and the dog will pull throu,[:)]
Lonnie, whether you do the job yourself or you take her to the pound is your call. It is not the dog's fault; she may have been abused, she may be a bit crazy; certainly she didn't bite out of a desire to hurt, but out of instinct. However, as ToolBabe and others have noted, a dog which succumbs to that instinct in the absence of a reasonable self-defense stimulus is a tragedy in the making - and you have young children! She has to be put down . . . there is no other safe (sane!) solution.
Years ago I had to put one of my dogs down because it turned vicious. It hurt like hell to do this, but I had no doubts then nor do I now that I did the right thing. He was a great dog, incredibly intelligent, but he had a stubborn streak a mile wide and when I left for college, he learned he could intimidate my parents by growling / snapping / biting. As a result, he got his own way. When I came home for a holiday, my parents told me about the problem and I attempted to discipline him . . . he just missed my nose. This dog had very little physical discipline - certainly not beaten, to say nothing of abuse. But I think he was borderline crazy - I swear his eyes would start to glow red when he decided things were going to be his way or the highway. the next day, I took him for a walk up in the woods and put a .22 in the back of his head when he stopped to sniff a chipmunk den; he didn't suffer . . . and, more importantly, this ensured he would not harm someone.
I hear ya Iconoclast, what needs to be done needs to be done. People sometimes have a love affair with animals so deeply they forget, they are animals and as much as we love them sometimes the love is not mutual.
French, I DO NOT ABUSE my dogs. I am however a firm beliver that if you need your * beat, it gets beat. BUT I do not wail on the dogs, you get into my garbage my boot goes into your *, one shot to get their attention, nothing more. I have not taken a dog and just beat it nor do I plan to. As far as the hounds, those dogs are not pets, they are hunting dogs, I paid good money for them to hunt, they live here only to work for me, thats it. I do love those hounds and if they need something they get it but also if they make a mistake it not as simple as telling them "no" like you would Fido. I want to compete my dogs and something as simple as a dog coming to you during the hunt wanting petted can have me scratched from the hunt. The dogs get minimal affection but are rewarded for a job well done. If they run junk, they get shocked untill they learn not to run junk, if they pull on lead, they get the lead snapped on thier backs, it's not cruel, it teaches them. I am the boss and they have a job to do and it is not sitting next to me with thier tail wagging it is hunting one thing and one thng only. If this offends you, go to your congressman and have hound hunting outlawed, then I will make pets out of my hounds, untill then those hounds work for me and if they need shocked or lead snapped across the back, they get it. At no time are these dogs abused, they are actually pampered. If they get injured they go straight to the vet, they need to be in tip top shape at all times. Therefor the comment I made in anopther thread about getting treated better then some others. If they sneeze, they get attention. Now their is times when being nice and petting them comes into play but it is not to be constant, you cannot train a working dog such as these hounds by training them with treats, they train hard and hunt hard. As far as the other dog, I have been nothing but nice to this *****, I have fed her well, given her mor ethan enough attention and she has not been worked with like the hounds, she is a different dog and needs to be treated as such. She is a pet and lives in my house with my 3 kids and my wife, I will not tolerate her biting me or my family members for any reason whatsoever! In my opnion there is not one good excuse for a dog to bite family members, I don't care if some say it is instict or not, a dog should never under any circumstance bite its owner. This is not the first time she has bitten me, she has shown aggression to my wife and has not accepted our new baby as part of the family, she has growled at an infant for simply being there. The last time she snapped like this I posted on here about it, I was ready to shoot her then But I didn't. i took advise about treatment with her and tried it, it did not work. For awhile she calmed down but she has reverted back to raiding the garbage and even now getting on the table and stealing food. This dog is well fed, well taken care of and NOT abused, she is simply a mean dog that even with calm training and such has not gotten better.
Maybe I am wrong and an animal abuser, I don't know. I believe if a dog meeses up repeatedly and talking nice to it like a child don't work, smacking it comes next. Keesha has had a few spankings, not hard enough to hurt her physically but enough to get thru her head that she was wrong. The last episode from this when I attemoted to correct her she bit me, I lost my temper and she got it good. She shoulda learned right then and there that biting her owner is not good. But she didn't, she bit again only this time drawing blood. As stated by others, what would happen if she did that to our baby? Would you still feel a time out is good punishment?
As far as the legality, it may be illegal but I have a problem with the Humane Society on this, you tell me what is more cruel. I take the dog out for a walk, sorta like Icono mentioned. The gun comes up without her knowing and in a flash her life is over. She never knew what happened, never felt pain, was not scared, she just ceased to exist. It's over, she will never bite again.
Now instead I take her to the Humane Society where we rescued this dog, they force me to pay money to return her, then they black book my family so we can never rescue another animal. The dog is placed in a coage, scared out of her wits. They run tests on her, maybe intimidate her to see if she will bite, there is noise from other dogs, she is freaking out. They pen her back up and the next day is placed in a chamber with 10 more dogs and gassed, she is fighting to get out, there is pain in her chest, she cannot breath, she goes unconcious and then dies, the same with the other dogs, they live thru 30 seconds of hell before death. IS that better then shooting her myself? If you call that humane you are sick.
I would rather take those condemned dogs myself and kill them, I feel sorry for those dogs in there, that is why we took Keesha. When we saw her she was on death row, nobody wanted her, she was going to die so we took her to save her. The dogs in there go thru more abuse in the week or two weeks they are penned up in there than I could ever dish out in 10 years simply by spanking them for getting into the garbage.
french, you cannot say how I treated them just by a couple paragraphs I wrote, I love my dogs and this hurts me. I have spent a lot of time with her trying to fix this problem. I tried the spanking I tried the liberal approach, nothing worked. Do I regret saving her from the kennel knowing that now she needs put down? No I do not, atleast now she will die outside of that dog hell called Humane Society!
Politicians are like diapers, every so often you need to change them, for obvious reasons.
you say you are not an animal abuser, then why the shock treatment? kicking them? hitting them?
i did not a thing about putting the dog down, i said the animals give as they get
i cannot understand why the bigger, smarter, civilized animal ends up hurting the smaller more stupid ones if they don't do what the smarter one wants.
do not say i am an animal lover, i am not. i do not own any nor will i. i do not even like them.
robsguns, i agree with you 100% towards scaredfrench, 7mm has one heavy situation on his hands and is no coward for thinking of terminating the dogs life, wether by the pound or by gun,id honesley choose the later of the two.its a dog, an animal, it needs a final * whipping for what it did, before the wife or kids get hurt....7mm, theres alot of us behind you here whom have respect for you, we do not respect people like sfrench, for what he implies.[:(!]
HAPPINESS IS LIKE PEEING YOURSELF, EVERYBODY CAN SEE IT BUT ONLY YOU CAN FEEL ITS WARMTH.
French, if you think giving a dog a boot to the * is cruel how would you stop the garbage raids. The boot to the * is not hard enough to cause damage, it does nothign but hurt her pride. It's not like I am trying to kick a 50 yard field goal with the dog! Christ wrestling with the dog for fun probably hurts more than the boot and yes we have payed rough with our dogs only to have the dogs have a blast having a chance to get in a few licks, tail is wagging the entire time telling me the dog is playing just as we are. Cracking the lead on the back, again no damage, it gets their attention. You make it sound like I am giving a full hard swing trying to break their backs, it's not even hard enough to leave a mark. As far as the shocking collar, go to this link and scroll down to pager 26, product safety, http://www.tritronics.com/Manuals/1083810a.pdf these collars do not hurt the dog, again it is a mentalll thing and yes, i have tried it out on myself, it stings but leaves no marks. Just like having an electric fence for the cows, don't hurt them at all. Bet you don't even like those do you.
