Any song by Franz Schubert is great.
Johannes Brahms wrote some pretty good songs also.

You got that right, when I was living in Jenks OK in the mid 70's, "Freebird" was about even with the national anthem! Right now I'm sitting here listening to Sprinsteen's "Born To Run" album. There's not a bad song on it. Too bad the rest of his albums weren't quite as good.

I'm partial to the "Four Last Songs" of Richard Strauss.

Just about anything from Nat King Cole's Greatest Hits.

In the rock realm, I always liked "Strawberry Fields Forever," "Highway Childe," and "My Generation." Almost forgot "Ticket to Ride."

"Freebird" isn't bad, but a little over-played. For you Rebs, how about "Sweet Home Alabama"? Or "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down"?

I guess I'm too much of a "geezer". I've never heard of some of those songs.
Sal....I'd kinda' agree with you but could you give me an example of the words to a couple of Shubert's songs?
    "Just funnin', son. Just funnin'."

I guess a lot of you guys have never heard the "REAL" music of Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, George Gershwin, Beethoven, Mozart, Rossini, von Suppe, Pachelbel, and, as Harold Hill would say:
    "JOHN PHILLIP SOUSA"

I'm sure my "geezerliness" is showing.

Gordian- I too dig those 4 last songs of Strauss. Strauss was probably the greatest song writer of the century.
Check out "Morgen". It was originally written with Piano accompaniment, but he orchestrated the accompaniment-many times Morgen will come on disc with the 4 last songs.

I was thinking about this topic and the great "story" songs of the past came to mind. Musically, they weren't all that great, but they told memorable stories. I'm thinking of songs like "Big John" and "El Paso":

Out in the West Texas town of El Paso
I fell in love with a Mexican girl.
Nighttime would find me in Rosa's Cantina,
Music would play and Felina would whirl.

Black as the night were the eyes of Felina,
Wicked and evil while casting a spell.
My love was strong for this Mexican maiden,
I was in love, but in vain I could tell.

One night a wild young cowboy came in,
Wild as the West Texas wind...
Dashing and daring, a drink he was sharing,
With wicked Felina, the girl that I love.

    So in anger I challenged his right for the love of this maiden;
Down went his hand for the gun that he wore.
My challenge was answered, in less than a heartbeat
The handsome young stranger lay dead on the floor.

Just for a moment I stood there in silence,
Shocked by the foul evil deed I had done.
    Many thoughts ran through my mind as I stood there;
I had but one chance and that was to run.

Out through the back door of Rose's I ran,
Out where the horses were tied...
I picked a good one; he looked like he could run,
Up on his back and away I did ride.

Just as fast as I could from the West Texas town of El Paso,
Out thru the badlands of New Mexico.
    Back in El Paso my life would be worthless;
Everything's gone in life nothing is left.
But it's been so long since I've seen the young maiden,
My love is stronger than my fear of death.

I saddled up and away I did go, riding alone in the dark...
Maybe tomorrow a bullet may find me,
Tonight nothing's worse than this pain in my heart.

And at last here I am on the hill overlooking El Paso,
I can see Rose's Cantina below.
My love is strong and it pushes me onward,
Down off the hill to Felina I go.

Off to my right I see five mounted cowboys,
Off to my left ride a dozen or more.
shouting and shooting; I can't let them catch me,
I've got to make it to Rose's back door.

Something is dreadfully wrong for I feel...
A deep burning pain in my side...
It's getting harder to stay in the saddle.
I'm getting weary, unable to ride.

    But my love for Felina is strong and I rise where I've fallen;
Though I am weary, I can't stop to rest.
I see the white puff of smoke from the rifle,
I feel the bullet go deep in my chest.

From out of nowhere, Felina has found me,
Kissing my cheek as she kneels by my side.
Cradled by two loving arms that I'll die for,
One little kiss and Felina goodbye.

The don't write them like that anymore!

I can listen to just about anything except country, rap and hip hop.
I have a few cds of classical, Beethoven and a mixed cd of different musicians. I listen to alot of the older rock, heavy and pop. But when it all comes down to one singer/writer or group it has to beOZZY!. I don't care how burned out he is, how stupid he looks on tv, whatever his music is supposed to stand for this week or anytime. I don't care what anybody says but the OZZMAN rocks! I love hos song "I don't wanna change the world", there is one lyric in that song that I really like," Call me a sinner, I got news for you, I spoke to god this morning and he don't like you!"

BTW, he is going to be in Pittsburg and Scranton next month for the OZZFEST, anyone here going? This will be my 4th OZZFEST and as long as he is still touring I will go to see him. I will be the only sober one there but it is great! I even saw him with Black Sabbath in Pittsburg a couple years ago on the Reunion tour, all I got to say about that is, AWSOME! It was a dream come true for Sabbath to get back together.

Here, this is for you guys who never listened to Ozzy and have no idea what I'm talking about, this should be about a 10 sec download, just click and play.

Gordian Blade......Have you noticed when they play "El Paso" nowadays they always leave out one verse..
"Just for a moment I stood there in silence,
stunned by the foul evil deed I had done.
Many thoughts raced through my mind as I stood there.
I had but one thought and that was to run".

Don't know why, doesn't mention guns or anything. Maybe the PC crowd doesn't want to give criminals the idea of running.......

I haven't heard "El Paso" in a long time, I guess I don't listen to the right radio stations. I can just close my eyes and recall it from memory anyway, I'm pretty good with music that way after I've heard something enough times. I just can't sing or play a note to save my life!

Hey Muley, when the Grateful Dead used to play El Paso, they always sang that verse!

I couldn't name any one favorite song or group even. Bob Dylan, Grateful Dead, Neil Young, Pink Floyd, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Janis, Jimi, The Who, John Lee Hooker, Muddy, Wolf, SRV, Solar Circus, The Clash, Black Sabbath, New Riders Of The Purple Sage, Frank Zappa, Johnny Winter . . . the list goes on and on . . .

    An observation:

A lot of you like classical music. Please reconsider what you have written. If a liberal were to come in and read the posts, there is a good chance you would give them a heart attack. We "gun nuts" are not suposed to enjoy anything other than country music as we drive around in our pickups, chew tobacco, drink beer and shoot at road signs. Or rap as we drive around in our street rods, snort coke, make drug deals and "bust a cap" on rival gang members. God forbid that the elite of the world should find out that there are those who move around in their circles who find firearms to be useful tools and fun pastimes. If you have and eductaion and listen to classical music, you are assumed to automatically recoil in horror at the word "gun".

(By the way, Sousa is great to listen to, but he sure wrote music that made us tuba players work!)

A couple of you mentioned Sousa.
A few months back I was at "another" auction sight, and there was a great vintage advertisement for sale. It was an Ithaca advertisement, and it had a picture of SOUSA with a shotgun in hand , with the caption "The March King, and president of his trap shooting club uses Ithaca Guns". Then it had a quote from Sousa talking about Ithaca guns. Being an ITHACA fan, and a SOUSA fan, I have to wonder why I didnt bid on that sign. Would have looked great in my basement.
