Quitting Smoking

Well, I am finally going to do it. I have been limiting my computer time for now, as that is when I smoke the most, that, plus these 14 hr days I've been working. I set a goal, that when I reach the 4 week mark I will buy myself a new gun. I am using a patch plus a support group at work. There are 4 of us that are quitting together. Wish us luck

First ones in, Last ones out.

I decided it was time to quit smoking, I went to my doctor last week for an annual check up and discussed the smoking issue with him. He boasted about this new medication called "Chantix" which aids in quitting smoking and wrote me a prescription. The medication works by essentially preventing nicotene from attaching to the receptors in your brain; therefore, you do not get any sense of enjoyment from a cigarette. You take the medication for 7 days before you attempt to quit smoking. Today is day 8 for me, my first complete smoke free day in over a decade, and I must say, this medication is extraordinary and has made this transition very simple and painless.

I have read many posts from folks in here about quitting smoking and just wanted to share my experience.

I ALWAYS have known that I would quit, it just wasnt gonna be that day, or the next day, and most likely the day after that. Fact is, I was horrified of the thought of ACTUALLY quitting. The folks at Pfizer that make this stuff also enroll you in a program called "GET QUIT", they either call you or email you every day through the process and give you activities to do. Its the real deal, they even give you a toll free number to call if you get a craving where you can talk to a "real" person.

Good start. Now, forget about the drugs, forget about the cigs. Whatever you are feeling will go away in a day or two. I quit cold turkey on January 4th of this year after 33 years. You have made the commitment, the rest is easy.

After my old man's heart attack last March his doc put him on Chantix and he hasn't had a cig since. He's been smoking for over 40 years and was always unsuccesful at quiting. It's worked so well for him that mom and grandpa both used it to quit.

every person i know who has quit smoking for good used nothing more than will power. everyone i know who has tried to quit smoking though medication or all the other new techniques has failed. when YOU decide to quit you WILL quit. its called WILL POWER and its the strongest force in the world.

Yeah I did it that way, but I sure as hell would not discourage anyone from quitting any way they can.[:(!]

Guys (and gals) you really can do it, I promise. If I can quit (It has been 18 months) believe me anyone can quit. Never quit quitting. Pay attention to the craving and you will realize it never, ever goes away while you are smoking. Even when you are actually having a smoke the craving never goes away, just quits sreaming so loudly. After 4 weeks of not smoking the craving went away. You can do it, you can do it, you CAN do it.

I quit 12 years ago, cold turkey. I had smoked for about 30 years up to three packs a day. Use anything that will help you lose the addiction.
Now, about this food addiction I acquired while quitting.[?]

well folks, 24 hours officially smoke free!!

Today I threw away every cigarette, lighter, and ashtray I own.

As long as I keep myself busy It's really no big deal. I've had cravings, but I just kind of "walk it off" by finding something to do real quick....like post on here. The Chantix, in my opinion, is remarkable.

For you others that have used Chantix, did you get any of the side effects? so far I have not experienced any at all.

    Thanks everyone for the comments!!

I quit out of fear, not will power. The desire to quit was there for years. Each pack was going to be the last.
I got pains in the right shoulder blade when I smoked heavily.
That was when they were $.33-.34 a pack.

There is some question of this drug's safety. I would definitely do your own research, specifically about possible side effects and investigate other methods before doing it.
    Personally i'd never take it.

I normally smoke about 3 cigs a day. One when I wake up, one after lunch, one after dinner. Still not healthy, probably not as bad as 3 packs a day, but something that is starting to bug me. I noticed that even at that low number, I miss it when I don't have one for a few days.

I'm planning on quitting altogether myself, and am in the middle of it(I have a nice jump on it- I've been on the road a lot the last few days and haven't had any now in a week) as kind of a pre-new year's resolution.

I'll still smoke the occasional cigar every few months.

I smoked my last cigarette when I got out of the Army & had to pay twenty cents a pack instead of the ten cents I had been paying in the PX. I switched to cigars & smoked them for around thirty years until the price soared.
I used to be able to get Churchill rejects for a quarter, cut them in half & the two halves would do me for the day. I haven't had a cigar for quite a while but if someone gives me a half decent one I will smoke it. After I started with cigars I could never understand why anyone would smoke a cigarette.

I'm still trying to quit second hand smoking. I've never been a smoker, but second hand smoking has to be the hardest habit to quit.

CONGRATS!! It's a tough habit to brake even after the addiction is gone.

I have two friends that quit using Chantix, and they both said they had very intense, and very strange dreams or nightmares while on it.

My wife and I quit cold turkey almost 3 years when she found out she was pregenant. She started back up shortly after our daughter was born, which really pisses me off. I was till finding myself reaching for a smoke and thinking of smoking after 6 months or more.

Be carefull using the chantix. I have had a heart attack before and started using it. within three days the heart was having problems. so stoped using it. but I will say the withdrawl simptoms wernt there.

I started smoking when I was 5 ro 6, (true). i quit when i was about 30 smoked about 2 packs a day, quit cold turkey, wish I could do that with the morphine and oxycotin I've been taken for the last 5 years for pain. I would almost like the pain more then the meds. getting old sucks, I guess I had more will power back in the old days.

I'm no longer on the chantix. I took it for a complete cycle and side effects were minimal. I did however have very bizarre and vivid dreams (the most common side effect) and I do mean bizarre.

All in all, Im smoke free and truly believe that the medicine made it possible...I'd rather have a few bad dreams for a couple months than to continue smoking for the rest of my life.

Like I posted in another column here, now in my 80's I quit smoking
(after over 65 years of smoking) with no help and no problems "so far,
but its only been about 5 weeks". Nope. Havent had a puff. But damn if I will celibrate by "lighting just one up" for a holiday after listening to fishermanben's post.

And I'll add a bit to it.

I have two brothers not mentioned before. One of them has never used tobacco, and has no problems. The other carries an inhaler in his pocket and breathes from it about once per hour. Between whiffs of that, he smokes three or four cigarettes..

I'm trying to quit. 63yo and been smoking since I was about 12. Tried Chantix
had dizzy spells and blacked out once while sitting (driver) at a red light. Taking Wellbutrin. Wished I could have continued with Chantix.
