I decided it was time to quit smoking, I went to my doctor last week for an annual check up and discussed the smoking issue with him. He boasted about this new medication called "Chantix" which aids in quitting smoking and wrote me a prescription. The medication works by essentially preventing nicotene from attaching to the receptors in your brain; therefore, you do not get any sense of enjoyment from a cigarette. You take the medication for 7 days before you attempt to quit smoking. Today is day 8 for me, my first complete smoke free day in over a decade, and I must say, this medication is extraordinary and has made this transition very simple and painless.
i have been a snuff user for 30 years.i got a perscription [spelling] for chantix to havent started my packet YET..
I have read many posts from folks in here about quitting smoking and just wanted to share my experience.
Good luck...I tried Chantix a few months ago and it made me pretty sick and had to stop taking it. I know of several people that took it and had great success with it..
What in hell have we come to. Need a drug to get rid of a drug which is really only a mild habbit? Come on guys, act grown up. Either smoke and enjoy it or give it up. Strictly up to you.

Joe, with all due respect, I see no reason to hinder modern medicine and technology aid a person in quitting.
Also, I think nicotene addiction is more than just a mild habit. Studies say its more powerful than heroin or cocaine addiction.
Best wishes to you and keep with the program! Here are some changes the body goes through that I learned of 12+ years ago when I quit. Within 20 minutes of smoking your last cigarette, your blood pressure & pulse rate drop to normal & the body temperature of your hands and feet increase to normal. Within 8 hours the carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal and the oxygen level increases to normal. Within 24 hours your chance of heart attack decreases. Within 48 hours nerve endings start regrowing and the ability to taste & smell is enhanced. Within 72 hours your bronchial tubes relax increasing lung capacity making breathing easier! Within 2 weeks to 3 months circulation improves, lung function increases as much as 30% and walking is sooo easy! Within 1 to 9 months, coughing, sinus congestion, fatigue, and shortness of breath decrease. Cilia regrows in the lungs increasing the ability to handle mucus to clean the lungs and reduce infection. Your body's overall energy level increases! Within 5 years the average chance of lung cancer drops from 137 per 100,000 to 72 per 100,000. After 10 years this drops to 12 per 100,000, almost the rate of nonsmokers! Walking briskly to and from the 100 to do targets is a breeze.
Hope I didn't bore you and I know I'll never light up again. Hope you feel the same and go for it! Don't forget, benefits are lost with just one cigarette a day........
