Use of a cane...which side?

My buddy sprained his right knee. He has a bunch of pain killers and they gave him a cane.
The question came up, since nobody told him, what side should he use the cane? The side with the bad knee or the other side.
I said the other side to take weight off the bum leg.

when you walk, your arms move opposite to your legs.
When using a cane, hold the cane in the hand opposite of the leg that needs support.
For example, if you have an injured right knee, hold the cane with your left hand.
When you place your right leg out, swing the cane out with the leg.
When placing pressure on the right leg, also place pressure on the cane with the left hand.

Canes are generally held in the hand on the opposite side of the injury or weakness.
This may appear counter-intuitive, but it allows the cane to be used for stability
in a way that lets the user focus much of their weight away from their weaker side and onto the cane,
thus preventing their center of balance from swaying from side to side as they walk.
It also allows for fluid movement that better matches walking, as the hand on the opposite side
of the leg generally sways forward in normal human locomotion.
Personal preference, or a need to hold the cane in the dominant hand means some cane users
choose to hold the cane on the same side as the affected leg.
A "50-50 chance of an answer question" and that's
what he gets!![;)][:0][:o)]
The cane is used on the opposite side of the bad side [^]
Back injuries affect left side sciatic nerve down to big toe.
Long walks require right side cane.
User will determine correct side soon enough.
It may depend on the injury.
There are always crutches.
Yeah....
why do you drive on a parkway,
and park on a driveway?????
There, problem solved. [:D]
Is he gonna' get one of the cool ones with a sword inside?
..My son gave me one of those. Problem is that the top end is a very
realistic looking percussion pistol. (though fake) I draw enough
attention in public without that. It's not very comfortable either.
..Since I never know which side the sciatica will hit me, I use the
cane on my dominate hand side. My doc did say to use it on the side
that is not hurting.
Use them on both.
But yes my Ortho Dr wants the cane on the opposite side of the leg that hurts.
Here's a good rule of thumb; if you have to use the cane on the same side as the injury, you should probably be on crutches...not using a cane.
That's probably true. My sprain is in the left knee and it hurt so much that when I put weight on my left foot that I placed the cane next to the left foot whether I had the cane in the left or right hand. Once the sprain started to improve I could use the cane in the opposite hand and stride naturally without too much of a problem. Pain will definitely dictate where the tip of the cane needs to be placed.

I can answer this. Let him try both sides and use the side that feels right. It won't take him long to figure it out.

I think that would be the best answer!
One holds the cane with the hand opposite to the injury and advance it together with the injured leg.
As the good leg advances and the bad leg holds the body's weight, one leans against the cane to take some of the strain off the injured leg.
You're welcome.

My Mom has one of those. She honestly did not realize it either.... She had bought it at a garage sale or flea market, but ended up not liking the handle. Now that she has had the hips replaced she doesn't use one any more. Have to make sure she leaves it to me!!!
I'm puzzled how it could possibly work on your good side? Doesn't your foot take the weight then? I had a sprained ankle, so I probably did need crutches, as someone said.....
