I stopped by my 75 year old neighbors house today to check up on her and see how she is doing since her husband passed away a few years ago and she refuses to live with family or find a smaller place to live. Her house was freezing cold and she had met me at the door all wrapped up in blankets and extra cloths. I ask her if her furnace was broken or something and she said no, the local propane guy refused to deliver gas to her unless she paid for 400 gallons up front? I thought about this for a few minutes and told her I would return. I went down to the guys place of business and ask him about her and her needs, I thought she would be behind on paying a past bill or something. He told me she was all paid up but he needed the payment up front because he has been ripped off to many times by others and he was not going deliver unless payment was made at time of delivery. I know this women lives on her husbands retirement and does not have much money to spare as it is.
So I paid for her to get her tank filled and paid in advance for her next scheduled delivery in April.I wrote out a note for the guy to put in her payment file that if any payments need to be made or if she falls behind on any payments to contact me for payment and do not refuse to deliver gas to her. I walked away so pissed I could scream.
I think I will talk to her and get a new tank and new gas guy for her. This guys just worries about money and not a customer that has been with his business for over 50 years before he took over it.He does not deserve her or my money I think.

If you REALLY want to get to him, stop payment on the check, then go in and pay him in cash--two days later.[}:)]

    Good on you Duce,

A local propane company tried a stunt like that. The attorney generals office heard about it and slapped them with a $100,000 dollar fine.

So how many gallons were delivered? 400?

    Let's break this all down.

He told me she was all paid

I would not do business with no company that thinks it's OK to discuss my account with anyone other than myself.

up but he needed the payment up front because he has been ripped off to many times by others and he was not going deliver unless payment was made at time of delivery.

You need to grow up. The guy owns his business and he is free to run it the way he wishes. How many times will you allow yourself to be robbed before you say enough is enough?

You are correct it is his business, But if you had been getting fuel and paying it off for many years then when you are out get told it has to be cash up front thats not right either. We had our gas Co. do that to us a few years ago, we called around and got a new tank form a company that is easy to deal with. Not much in the ripping off the gas guy you dont keep paid up you dont get gas.
Just smile and say nothing, let them guess how much you know.

I agree. He's not the devil because he requires that the bill be settled prior to delivery. That's how he wants it done. Don't like it, buy gas from someone else; but crucifying the guy for minimizing his exposure.

Sometimes money is not everything. Especially when you have a customer with a proven record of paying and not ripping you or others off.
Also someone stated about discussing ones account. First I am well known within my " small community " and if you have ever lived in a small community you would know thats ones business is everyones business and we tend to take care of one another as I have just done for my neighbor. This man is a outsider who moved into the community after buying the business and does his business the big city way " money and profit first, dependable and reliable customers last ". I can understand him wanting to be paid for his service and it is how he makes his living but he should have reviewed his customers list and have a good idea of who he could trust and who he could not. After having breakfast with my local buddies and talking about this I found out that he is screwing everyone for a profit. Many people that have done business with the company for years are leaving him and going to other businesses for his way of treating his customers. I agree he owns the business and can run it the way he see`s fit, but I and others do not have to patronize his business.

Well to beat it all the lady called me a few hours ago and she was trying to repay me for what I did for her. It almost got into an argument by me refusing to take the money and her insisting that I do !
We finally settled on her giving me some of her home canned corn and tomato`s in repayment. Gosh I thought I would never get out of that one.

This reminds me of Denny's and the Brothas. Folks at some Denny's made brothas pay up front. Say Duce is the little lady of the African presuasion? Not that it matters.

The thing I don't get is if she's all paid up then why didn't the * hat haul the gas? I forsee flaming bag of poop on his door step with extra menudo.

Free enterprise is one thing but to change the rules with no notice is something entirely different. Soon, he'll be out of business BEGGING for customers and the ones he'll get are going to be the same ones that ripped him off.

There is no way I could live with myself if I let an old lady freeze over money. I understand not wanting to get ripped off, but how much money does it take to soothe your concince over doing something like this to an old lady? Didn't he have a mother, or a grandmother, and would he want them treated that way?

You did good, and he's a money-grubbing *, in my opinion.

Karma can be a bich. I expect that is a lesson he will learn.

Karma will get him and also get the ones that sided with him, too.

There's no excuse acceptable for letting a little old lady freeze.

You need to make the press aware of what happened and let the jury of public opinion sentence him.

I would write a letter for editorial in the local newspaper to let everyone know what kind of guy and business this is. I believe there are puco regulations regarding this kind of action that need to be looked into. A complaint filed with puco will no doubt stir up some trouble for this jerk too. Make him pay dearly.

You did well, and if I could help someone that way I'd be proud to.

However, that doesn't mean the business owner is the devil. I'm not sure where you shop, but usually speaking I have to pay before I can take it home. I suspect that with the economy the way it is and rising costs of fuel, a lot of his customers have taken advantage of him of late. Not that they wanted to, just that they couldn't afford it.

If he didn't enforce this policy HE might go out of business. Maybe he feels bad about it, but at the end of the day he has to feed HIS family.

I admire the woman's independent spirit, but having dealt with elderly relatives who refused to move out of a home that they couldn't maintain, couldn't afford, was in an old, bad neighborhood, and wouldn't consider even moving in with family, at some point you have to say "I'll do what I can to help, but it's your problem." This woman, if she can't afford to heat her house, needs to move out, simple as that, or needs a family member to move in with her and share the costs. There's such a thing as tough love, and her family needs to practice it.

When we put my grandparents in an assisted living home, it was after we found they weren't taking their meds, couldn't even walk to the garage, couldn't get to the toilet, etc. We simply couldn't keep them in the house, and they refused to move in with either my parents or my aunt. It got to the point where they were going to the bathroom in a bucket and wanted us to come over twice a day (20 mile round trip) to empty it. They fought us every step of the way, but finally went and their quality of life went way up for their last 8 years.

Your neighbor might not be that bad off yet, but it's coming. If you care about her, help her for now, but don't let it get that far.
