I was informed (through the DVD "Making Glocks Rock") that tenifer is a heat treat process which penetrates the steel 5 microns making it incrediblely corrosion resistant.
That's all true, though its a little bit of an oversimplification.
The carbo-nitriding process requires immersion in a chemical bath at 500 degrees Celcius. So while heat treatment is part of the process, its a bit more complicated than just heating.
Another way to think about it, is that its a modern high-tech version of case-hardening. Its a combination of heat and chemicals that together harden the metal surface.

y'all missed the whole point of what i was saying. when i said "if its not coated in tennifer, i dont carry it" i meant just that. since glocks are the only gun coated in tennifer(note i didnt say a tennifer like substance) you could reasonably extrapolate that i will only carry a glock.
Got it, this was a coy way of saying you carry a Glock.
I didn't miss your point, I was simply raising another one. . .that many other gunmakers use an identical finish.
(Note that technically Tennifer isn't a "coating" its a process that alters the external molecular structure of the metal).
Another point not mentioned, but actually relevant here is that the black color of Glock pistols does NOT come from the hyped "Tenifer" finish. As mentioned above, the carbo-nitriding finish adds no color to the metal; it appears to be bare metal.
Glocks are black because **ON TOP** of the "Tenifer" the guns are Parkerized.
Back on topic, another viable option for this beat up Walther is just a re-blue. That would be pretty cheap, though obviously the gun would rust again if neglected.
