OK...so in my 17 year career in EMS, I have now had a first. About two months ago, I transported a gentleman from his home to the Emergency Room. He was an extremely nice fellow and his condition was stable, so we talked guns for most of the ambulance ride. I also commented on his dog that was running around outside his home. Very playful dog. He tried every way in the world to give me that dog, but I just could not take it. We've got three cats at home and I'm sure they would not be too thrilled to add a very energetic dog to the household. Now..skip forward to this past Friday. We got called to this same house for a structure fire. The elderly gentleman that lived there could not be found. His home was a total loss. The same energetic dog was running around trying to play with the firefighters, myself, and my partner. The deputy that was on scene said that he was going to call Animal Control to come pick up the dog if the owner could not be located. So, after a few text messages with my wife, I told the deputy that I would take the dog. I called my boss (who is a known animal lover) and he gave the OK to bring the dog back to the station until I went home. I gave my information to the deputy so he could contact me if the gentleman wanted his dog back. The deputy called me an hour later and said that the gentleman did, in fact, remember me. He said that he wanted me to have the dog, since he could no longer care for it. When I got off work Friday night, I took the dog to the vet's office. He's staying the weekend at the vet's for shots, exam, bath, etc. I'm going to pick him up tomorrow. From what the owner said, the dog is half Border Collie and half Blue Healer. His name is going to be Smokey, since I got him from a house fire. Here are a few pics....

Smokey, still on scene

Smokey, hanging out in our Dispatch Center while I was on a 911 call
smokey2.jpg

Smokey, on the way home from work. He insisted on riding on the console right next to me

Any suggestions on what kind of dog he may be (other than POSSIBLY Border Collie & Blue Healer mix)?????

Forgot to mention...we are going to introduce him slowly to our cats. I'm not sure how this is gonna go. I do NOT want our cats living under the bed in fear. If it doesn't work out, I will have to find Smokey another home.

He will be a very loyal companion for you. A dog nows when someone steps up and saves them from a uncertain future. I have found those dogs to be the most loyal and loving.

I used to have a dog that looked just like yours. It was border collie/ blue healer too.

Her name was Codie, the best dog I ever had. Smartest too.

She was hit by a snow plow years ago.[:(]

[:D]How appropriate for an EMS guy to have a "healer" for a dog. [:D]

If, on the other hand, he turns out to be half "heeler" (cuz those mean li'l Aussie stock dogs bite cattle on their heels) you do have a very energetic dog on your hands. Let's hope he gets his brains from the Border Collie half (he looks to me like he could be that cross).

Any road, he's a super-high energy dog with herding dog instincts, likely too smart by half, and will desperately need a job to do . . . otherwise, he'll make up his own job (herding cats, digging, barking, herding neighbor kids, etc., etc.) and I'm sure you won't like his choice. Great working dogs, lousy pets.

Any chance of getting you two to do search and rescue ? Though law enforcement types all want a German Shepherd, BCs, Aussies, Heelers and other herding types are increasingly successful at SAR.

Looking at him, I thought Border Collie-something cross. I didn't really see 'heeler' in him 'til I read your posts. Heelers are pretty headstrong and Border collies really timid. I hope his energy is not all that of a heeler and you can keep him. He'll be an awesome dog if you can. Heeler's and Border Collies are both really smart dogs. One thing you can do, is watch him around the cats (introduce him gently, don't turn him loose) and if he gets nasty with them end the situation right away with a slight punishment, then take him out and play with him and end the session on a good note. Try another day to introduce him to the cats. Keep trying. This looks like a dog worth keeping.

Yep - should be an exceptionally smart, loyal dog. Easy to train, with excellent breed characteristics.

I can see the possibility of Border Collie in him. With Border Collie in him, be careful, he will be out smarting you and training you rather than you training him. I often say that the reason I like Border Collies so much is that is nice to have a dog that is smarter than my wife and kids![:D] For some reason when I say that Hot Momma gives me a really nasty look. I have noticed, nasty look or not, she doesn't argue the fact.

UPDATE>>> I went to the vet's office to get Smokey today. They said that he's been vomiting quite a bit, but they think it's due to the antibiotics he's been on. The vet originally wanted to keep him another day, but I talked her into letting me bring him home, as long as I brought him back for a follow-up tomorrow. Soooo...I brought him home and introduced him to the cats. Two of the cats went nose-to-nose with him. They look a little aggrivated with him, but they really don't seem to care very much. The dog, however, seems a little scared of the cats!!! So far, it's looking like this is going to work out!

My dog, a stray that adopted me, looks a lot like that dog. The cats will be fine, they are the boss and the dog will know it. You have a fine companion there that will just melt your heart as time goes by. It is amazing how smart and loving they are.

Going back and re-reading posts, you were wondering if he was anything besides border collie and blue heeler. My first thought of the first pic was Welsh Corgi? But, they are pretty short. It's the ears and the head size/body ratio. And the tan in the face which Border Collies have.

Then the pic with the cat and your son makes him look like he's 1/2 border collie and mixed with 1/2 Border Collie and something else. He looks more border collie than anything else I can place. But, not pure. Anyhow, if he's taking to you and the family he's gonna be a great dog.[:D]

    Funny....
He looks like about 2/3 Heeler and maybe 1/3 border collie/Aussie shep. to me..
At any rate,i presume he is or soon will be the keeper of all yall's hearts and VERY INTELLIGENT![:D]

Here's the latest update on Smokey. He had to go back to the vet overnight Tuesday for dehydration. The vet said it was more than likely due to depression/anxiety. Brought Smokey back home yesterday, and he's totally different....very energetic and playful!! He is actually making himself right at home. Now, the only problem is that two of the three cats are continuously hiding in the bedroom. I'm not happy about that at all. One of the conditions of Smokey getting to live here is that the cats do not have to live in fear. Is this something that will get better over a few days???

[/quote]From what I can remember it was about a month before they would be in the same room together. After that point they became
    inseparable

was a shaky start but they worked it out
