As long as the dog does not bother the cats they all will get along fine. It may take a month or so for the cats to be totally comfortable with the dog. Put a litter box where they are hiding and their food and as they start to get along remove the litter box when they stop hiding.
P.S. your a mighty fine man to take in this new family member
Good man and good job. The cats will adapt. Right now, they are not hiding out of fear, but more refusing to socialize with (gasp) A DOG! They are simply snubbing Smokey, ascerting their higher social class (in their minds) Trust me, those cats could lay Ol' Smokey's nose wide open if they wanted to, and he knows it!
it takes a little while when we first got my dog, my cat ran the house. but one day when my dog was a puppy he cornered the cat and my cat gave him a good one right in the nose after that my dog learned who ran the house and they were fine after that now they are the best of friends haha you will always see them sleeping together
Well, guys...I'm not sure if this is gonna work out. Smokey is a spectacular dog, but the cats just aren't "feeling the love". Actually, two of the cats are somewhat OK with him, but the third cat, Pedro, only comes out AFTER we put Smokey in his kennel for the night. And then, he doesn't stay visible for long. To me, this is almost unacceptable. Pedro is probably my favorite cat. I pulled him out from under the bed just a little while ago to take him to the food bowl. As soon as Pedro saw Smokey, he freaked out. Climbed up my arm and made a bee-line for another hiding place, with Smokey chasing right after him. I've got multiple cuts on my arm and stomach now from Pedro's climb. I know it's been less than a week, and I'm not yet ready to give up on Smokey, but something has to get better!! It's really bothering me that my buddy, Pedro, is not here on the couch with me as I type this. C'mon guys...give me your honest advice.....is this gonna work out????
My Cat stitch would have a nervous breakdown if I brought in a dog. Even another cat sends her over the top. But after a short time she will come around.
Now if I could just get her into a Kennel to take her to the vet. She tore me up so bad last time I almost had to go get stitches.
Personally I don't think you have given it enough time, but I don't claim to be an expert about combining cats and dogs that are grown.
I had one cat in my life,....she was part of a litter born under the dumpster at one of my wholesalers.
My small pooch was already about 2 years old, but when I brought the barely weened kitten home, they did pretty well.
After she was a bit older, he would trap the cat per se, and one day she let him know how things worked! A nice swat to the nose.[:D]
That was it,....after that they played together, and the dog would lay on his back while the cat gave him a bath.
After she was older they ganged up for mischief shall we say.
I left a box of dog treats on the counter one day, and went to work.
When I came home the kitchen had torn cardboard everywhere, and my pooch was looking at me like,...."oh crap."
Cat had jumped up on the counter, and knocked the box onto the floor.
I set the same scenario up one day that I was home. It was like they were working together. Cat jumps the counter, dog is waiting with a wagging tail just below, as she starts to slowly move the box.[:p]
That one didn't work out so well.
Anyway,....my cat died at the age of 12, but the dog lived to be 16.
She died about 2 years before him, and you could tell that he missed her very much.
Doubt this helps much, but all I can say is give it a little more time. You are expecting miracles overnight.
At the same time, I understand your frustration.
Whatever you do, just be sure to find the dog a good home. He has been through a lot already.[:)]

First thing is Smokey has to learn not to go after the cats. That's gonna take some stern discipline. If he won't leave the cats alone then no it won't work out. But, dogs being smarter than cats,[;)] can be trained to leave them alone. But, you've got to have some serious input into this. It took a couple years for the cat we had, and loved our dog, to get used to our dog's pups. She just wouldn't do it. But, even they got used to it over time. Bottom line is, the dogs can't go after the cats' fun&games or serious.

Give it time. It usually will work out after a few days, maybe even a couple of weeks.
