Well, well, well, I just had to respond to this post again after looking at the ewg.org web site. I was pretty offended by the "greedy farmers" characterizations in this discussion and had to put my two cents in again. Applying for and accepting a government subsidy or other means of assistance such as an interest free loan for ones properly run operation to be more productive or for protection against unforseen perils of farming is not being a greedy farmer. However, what I saw on that web site made my blood boil as many of those peolpe getting the bucks are not "farmers" and are taking gross advantage of the system. We have the only remaining operating farm our township and take no government assistance yet my neighbor, who is an office worker in Philly, was able to get $6,950.00 for his silly 10 acre hobby/horse farm. The guy up the road, who is an heir to the Ludens family of candy fame, was able to get $16,500.00 for his 24 acre hobby farm and another neighbor who owns a 10 acre farmette was able to get $1,900.00. Other examples that I found in my area of who is getting the gravy are wealthy retirees, absentee and large corporate (land development companies) owners. These are the real greedy and undeserving "farmers". If you have 10 acres and a lawn tractor and straw hat or an investment property, you may be a farmer in need - give me a break! Look over that web site and you will see that most all the real farmers in need just take what they need to keep going and make good, whereas the others (some farmers included) are just sucking at the tit, I mean teet. Thanks for posting that web site.

You see why I get so worked up about it. I don't hate farmers, big or small. I just hate the way we have to hold their hand all the time pisses me off. Hey, it's dog eat dog in my business, if I can't stay competive, I'm all done. Yea, I have a horse farm, and yes I live on it, And yes, I do all the work on it with NO goverment money, in fact, I don't even claim any of the expenses on my taxes. Why, 'cuz it's a hobby for fun! If I really knew how much money I spend on these horses every year, I might jump off a bridge! LOL
