I've by and large had very positive dealings with the police. Overall they've been very polite with me.At the same time, a good buddy who is black and grew up in inner-city Philly told me he's had to assume the position six times in his life, twice with a gun pointed at him. Never did anything wrong, just looked like somebody who did. I have to imagine that if six times in my life I was forced to lean up against a squad car or a wall and be patted down, and if twice I had a gun pointed at me while it was happening, my opinions of the police might be very different. BTW, I asked him if the cops ever apologized when they found out he wasn't the person they were looking for, and he said not once. Gives you something to think about.

Living in Philly and seeing what complete a#$holes Philly cops are, certainly could make one feel cops are creeps. I think in general, city cops are a$%holes(that includes suburban), while the rural police force might be a bit different. However, I just assume not trust any cop(when they are cops. Off duty is a different story).

Idsman, I have been stopped about 6 times in the last 40 years, and been given one speeding ticket and one "violation of the fuel conservency act." Mostly I am pretty cool, but one time in Texas, I got the shakes too. I was doing 72 in what then was a 55. Very professional State Trooper gave me a warning ticket. I did not speed in Texas again for the rest of that trip. I have no idea why that time gave me the shakes, but it sure did. I have run into a couple of banty rooster types who were pretty self-impressed, but none of the LEOs I have encountered had any serious attitude problems. I am particularly impressed with Game and Fish agents who have to walk up to two or three guys armed considerably more heavily than they area. They have all been very professional and only one obviously concerned about how seriously outgunned he was. We did all we could to put his mind at ease, as we figured it was to everyones benefit. I did not grow up believing that the policeman was my friend, and the sixties did nothing to change that, but I must admit, all the LEO's I have actually dealt with have about convinced me I had the wrong idea.

Bullzeye--You're a good guy but I must say that TrinityScrimshaw is a no-nonsense/what-you-see-is-what-you-get kind of guy. He doesn't BS and posting tall tales here is probably the last thing on his to-do list (unless he is talking about the last gobbler he HARVESTED ). If TrinityScrimshaw says it's true, I'd bet my next paycheck on it.While I was working patrol out at Fort Lewis a Washington State Patrolman pulled over a DUI suspect who turned off the highway and onto Fort Lewis. I parked across the street and back aways and observed while letting the trooper do his job. One of the passengers stepped out of the car in a very unthreatening manner right after the trooper shut the door behind the subject that he had just apprehended. That passenger had a Glock 22 pointed at him in the blink of an eye. That part of Washington has BAD gang problems. Different departments have different SOP's on PRESENTATION of deadly force. You better believe he was ready and prepared to pull the trigger if this person posed a threat to his life. When someone gets out of a vehicle without being told to do so, that person better expect to be looking down the barrel of a gun.The difference in the standards between presenation for a CCW holder and presentation for a cop are understandable. A responsible CCW holder will avoid situations in which the presentation of deadly force may come up. A responsible CCW holder will not purposely walk through South Central LA "just because he can" and thinks he is ten feet tall and bulletproof because he has a CCW. A cop's job takes him into situations where this is absolutely necessary and is required to pursue those that would do him harm. Cops are involved in situations where they have to draw first all the time. If you are a CCW holder, you better not draw unless you have no other option. P.S. The cops in this situation weren't pulling out their guns for the purpose of emphasis. They were covering their butts. The police in this nation are more conservative about their use of force than in almost any other nation in the world. To ahead and do the same thing in Germany or Italy. You'll have Uzi's pointed at you and you will probably get beat soundly. Refuse to give blood for the purpose of a blood alcohol test in Germany and you will be beaten until you bleed enough through your mouth and nose.[This message has been edited by idsman75 (edited 02-20-2002).]
