Im looking at buying a dual purpose motorcycle. There are three brands that i am interested in.Kawasaki,Honda and maybe the yamaha. I would like to hear your opinion on which one of these is the one i need. I was wondering if the yamahas are any good.

On several different threads we've talked some about bikes. Thought I'd see if anybody was interested in a discussion specifically about motorcycles.Who loves them? Who rides them? Who used to ride them? Who wants to someday ride them? Who hates them?I've been riding for 37 years and owned a lot of different motorcycles. Japanese, British, Italian and American.Got my first bike, a red Honda 90, right after I got my driver's license in 1964. I presently ride a 1991 Harley Davidson FXRS Lowrider Convertible. I bought it new in March of 1991 and have about 75,000 miles on it. It still has the stock engine displacement (80 cu.in.) but I've added lots of bolt-on, go-fast stuff over the years. After-market carb, pipes, ignition, cam, brakes, shocks and fork springs, seat...Anybody else????????

What kind of bike can i get for 2 grand? Not anything fancy, just reliable, like a 500cc or 650 or something along those lines.

A guy I know crashed his 2006 (?) Kawasaki Vulcan Custom and needs a new fuel tank, so I had a look on eBay. What the heck; as long as I'm looking...

I used to have a 1976 Yamaha 250 Enduro. Wouldn't you know? There are four of them on eBay. (Three say '75, but I think they're '76 year-models.) I'd snap one up and pretend I'm in high school again, only they're too far away from the Great Green Pacific Northwest.

Lowrider, you already know my reasons for riding.lol Everybody has a way of "getting high". some get high on life, music, guns, religion, drugs and many other reasons. Not everybody agrees on the best way to get high. My "high" is adrenalin. one way for me to get an adrenalin high is acceleration and speed. Alot of older fellas will say some pretty harsh words about this and I feel they have their right to opinions, and to get outa my way! i ride a bike for the adrenalin rush I get from ripping thru a few gears at full throttle. It's a rush. Sure it's dangerous but it's fun. Some people will ride horses on some bad terrain or other things that are dangerous. My horse happen to go ###mph in factory condition. I can also cruise on that bike at the speed limit, enjoy winding country roads and so forth. I ride the way I feel. If I feel like hitting a 2 mile straight away( time to quote some truckers), and say "time to put it in the big hole and gouge on it" I'm gonna do it. You dont need 20 miles of road to achieve nose bleed speed on this machine. But That is why I ride. I ride for me. Some say I'm coo coo for it but oh well. Lowrider don't take this personal, And sometimes it's fun to pick a race with a couple of Harley guys by sneaking up beside them, doing something silly so they chase you, crack the throttle in 3rd gear, do a w######## and speed off, never to see them again (because they cant catch you)lol. All in fun. Other than that I love bikes, freedom and s####. I have a Yamaha ##### and just made a purchase on a Yamaha Virago so I stay out of trouble. Next

Been riding since I was 14 on borrowed motorcycles. Didn't own my own first motorcycle until 1967 when my first wife divorced me. My first bike was a TR-6 650 Triump. With the peanut tank, extended front end and painted Jet Black, man the girls dug my chili. made the mistake of taking it out to the Hills where all of the guys took their dirt bikes, after watching them for about 30 minutes I decided that the old TR-6 would climb those hills also. well I got back and made a run at it and made it to the top of the hill but let off of the gas as I went over the top. came down on the hump of the hilltop and flattened out my Megaphone pipes. Instant Depression. But after that I was hooked. Got into dirt bikes for several years. Owned OSSA, Husky, Bridgestone Special Racer Flattracker, Maaco, Honda Elsenor and 3 and 4 wheelers for the kids when they were growing up. Competed in Motorcross and Enduros a few times. Then I had to channel all of my time into raising a family and working to provide for them. anything that was purchased was something that we could use together as a family. After all of the kids were raised and put through college, then I bought my first Harley at age 48 an "89" Lowrider Convertible that was second hand. My boy now rides it and I have a "2000" Road King. prior to that I had a 1998 Road King but wrecked it in 1999 on the way to Sturgis with my son, was only 10 miles from the house and ran off into the medial strip going 75 miles per hour. Wadded her up like a used McDonalds hamburger wrapper, got it repaired to look just like new but just didn't feel good about it so I traded it in on the new one...That is my story and I am sticking to it! Oh by the way I just have 1 trophy from all of my racing experience and that was for 3rd. place in motocross, However there wasn't a very good turn out that day and only 3 guys were in my class, which means that I came in last place but got a trophy...HA! Now when I met my new wife she let on like she liked Motorcycles untl about 6 months after we were married, then she broke down and told me the truth, she despised them because she is a register nurse and worked mosly in surgery and the emergency room and had seen a lot of messed up people because of bikes. Well after all of these years she got over it and now enjoys going on road trips more than I do, man there isn't anything better than being one with the old environment on a Motorscooter. Missing 3 front teeth from the time that I flipped my dirt Bike End over end when I lived in town and was showing off on how I could ride while standing up on the seat, lost my balance because I had been drinking a little home made Concord Wine at the time. Did it on a warm summer day when all of my neighbors were out in there front yard to see it happen. An old Gentleman that lived across the Street from my Called me "Evil" from that day forward until we moved away into the country. Now you guys have gotten me all stirred up and I am not going to have time to go to the gun show today and do it justice so I guess I will just have to go tomorrow. Man what a long winded story! You are next Mudge!!!!![This message has been edited by Otoman (edited 01-05-2002).]

I'm closing out the topic I started and am mving it here.Dano, you've had some cool bikes. How long were you in Italy?I've got a X-police Motto Guzzi G 5 1000.Had been sitting for years, runs good, not going to get too carried away untill I get a title.Ohio will not except paper work from other states that sell titles, but I know of two frames I could buy for title.Yeah,I know it's not legal, not too worried though.I've got a guy in NY that will sell me mine own bike,a little steap though.About the Vincent Black Shadow...........I know of a Vincent Black Shadow that might be for sale again.Kinda erks me.I knew of the bike for years and when ever asked the answser was always "I'll never sell it". There was a guy I worked with a couple of years ago that I told about the Vincent. He no way believes me.The Vincent owner came in a few days later and I grabbed my co-worker and told the owner to tell the story of the Vincent. He starts in a bar in West Virgina and over heard a conversation about a guy that had lost his job and needed money.Somene commented that he should sell the VINCENT. His ears perked up an he inserted himself into the talk. Guys phone had been cut off,and directions were sketchy at best. Long story short,he finds the owner and buys it. The guy I worked with is heavy into Motto Guzzi's and shows up with a bike in the back of his truck. It's not a guzzi. It's the Vincent. I worked on getting that bike for years, along comes a stranger and takes the prize. I hear the bike may be for sale again,my pockets now will not be deep enough. Any players I'll try to get info.He also has a BSA and a Harley he hasn't ridden in years. Ya know, good guys do finish last. IP: Logged Lowrider Member posted 01-05-2002 02:25 PM If it's in any kind of good shape the thing's probably worth $30,000+. I've seen some of the rarer models advertised in Motorcycle Trader selling for more than a hundred grand.

Like nobody's ever heard this before...Here goes. My first bike was a '51 Indian Chief. Suicide clutch, spark advance, hand shifter, kicker. You've got the picture.Sold it when I got discharged from the USAF in Albuquerque in '59. Next came a '72 Trumpet Bonneville 750. A real screamer. Sold that, bought a '75 BMW /5. Totalled that. Not surprising. I drove that thing like a madman.Kinda' surprised I'm still alive. Up I-66 at ridiculous speeds every morning on the way to work.Current bike is '95 Road King with the obligatory chrome, a minor custom paint job, and a few extra power goodies to haul my butt around (260Lbs).Mrs. Mudge's first ,and only, is a '88 Low Rider. Custom paint job. Lotsa' chrome, lowered. She's 5'2" and has it lowered as far as it'll go and she STILL can't get both feet flat on the ground.7MM....Glad your getting your adrenaline fix but sure hope you're around a long time to tell us about it. BTW, are you actually able to sucker HOG drivers into chasing you? In Harley 101 they teach us to NEVER, EVER mess with crotch rockets. I learned that the hard way. Just after I got the Road King, I was cruising along I-70 (long straight limited access), and got passed by a couple of "go fasters" on rice burners who did the "kick it down a gear and light it up" manuever. "Well" says I, "Nobody's gonna' do that to me!". A few miles later when my speedometer was pegged, and these guys were steadily disappearing, I saw the light. And it wasn't their taillights cause they were outta' sight by then. Like I said, play if you must but PLEASE be careful!!!!!Mudge the chastened

Mudge, sometimes (just playing around) flip the bird and wave bye bye, gets em going quick. If that dont work hold up a bottle of Jack Daniels and wave it at them then do the bird and bye bye move. Only reason I do that is because I had a couple of them tell me they "hopped" up their Hogs and there was no way we could outrun them. Harleys do what they was intended to do, cruise. A harley is not made to go fast, it is purley a cruising machine and it does a fine job of that. Let the hell raising to the rice rockets. Unless you want to scare little old ladies with the 2" drags, there you got me beat with the noise. I could not imagine redlinig a Harley with straights on it, my god those things are LOUD!

Picked up a Beemer R80RT in a garage sale in '91. A visiting German called it a pteradactyl. Never had to ride the slow lane before and dont really care for it but still have the machine.I can see a full fairing makes sense on a trip. The down side is that it also amplifies all the mechanical engine noise. Bikes are great but low and not so slow, over scenic countryside, in a Beech Bonanza is hard to beat.Lets see, should I take out the Ariel Square 4 or the Vincent Rapide, the Sunbeam or the AJS? Dream dream

ysacres: Had a Honda CX 500 for fourteen years. Blasted thing just kept running with virtually no maintaince except tires. Finally I washed it and the cold water busted something & as soon as I started out I was being sprayed with hot water. With ahappy heart I now had an excuse to buy a new bike. To my disgust I found that there is nothing out there that I want. I'm tooold to ride a bike you have to lay down on & all the others are waaaay too big. I wanta medium sized (500 to 750) bike with a built in fairing w/saddle bags. I cannot concieve of why anyone needs a one liter or larger bike. The bike I long yearned for was a BMW R-60. I had a R-25 in Germany &figured the R-60 was all anyone could need.

Honda 70 trail,Kz1000.Harley 250,Honda 500-4,550-4,never had a Honda 750. Kaw 900Z1b liked to have got me in jail over in Pensacola, Fl. Headed out to the interstate, when I remembered something I didn't do. Turned it around and started taching it out. Topped a small rise as I shifted to 4th. State Trooper had just pulled into the medium. 141mph in a 45mph zone.Didn't see blue lights, so I grabbed 5th and kept going. Just a couple miles up the road, two Escambia sherrif's were bumper to bumper, blocking the road. Anybody that says 900 kawasaki brakes don't fade, don't know what their talking about. Stopped it with the front wheel between the bumpers. Crash bars wouldn't have fit. Just put my hands on my helmet...Knew I was in trouble. Have almost all endorsements on my CDL, except a class A bus,(can drive Class A trk, or Class B Bus, But not a class A bus)and a motorcycle. Did the last so I could keep all the rest. License has never said save driver until I got rid of the motorcycle endorsement.Ride safe, hazbeen.

Jumped on a BSA 650 in 1956 and never looked back. After many others, I've had the same ride since 1980. '80 CBX. Hence the user name. Sure it was a demonstration of overkill - so what. 6 cly, 24 valves, 6 carbs - if I couldn't work on it myself, I'de need a bank loan! Missed 3 years of Sturgis since 1983. I'll be at the Stockade in Deadwood, Wed night this year if any of you guys are going. I'll have my patch on. Ride safe.

I keep a motorcycle endorsement on my license, just in case I decide I want to ride one, though I have not done so in years. Actually, I have come to value my thin skin enough that I will probably never again own a motorcycle.First bike was a Triumph 500 Tiger. It was semi-reliable and sounded neat. Then a Kawasaki 250 off-road racer. Then a Suzuki on/off road bike that was a pile of junk.Next was the best bike I had, a Suzuki GS1000. Superbly comfortable and fast.Last bike was a late model Sportster. I found I did not ride it much, so I got rid of it. Also found that my legs are too long to ride a Sporty. If I ever get another Harley, it will definitely be an F-bike.

Started with a BSA-500cc Single late '50s and currently ride a 1977 Harley Superglide FXE that I bought as a true basket case in 1988 and did a frame up restoration and it will be my last bike as I set it up exactly like I wanted and have not found any reason to change. Not real fast but it starts on the first kick and has never let me down.

Love...hate bikes. Miss my last one every nice day that rolls around...but would not have another one...got too wise. Last one was a 1974 Harley Superglide I bought "new" in 78, show room+. Loved that bike...rode all over the southwest on it...CO.,NM.,AZ.etc. Learned around Dallas not to ride on Mon. or Fri...Mon. peoples first day back to work...Fri. their in a fluster to start the weekend...99% of the accd. that "almost" happened to me were on thos days, honest. Won three awards in Stock Custom for it, beautiful ride(miss it when I talk about it to). Sold it in 86 for 3,800, made 2,000 profit at that! Wish I had it now to sell!!! Seen the price on the new hawgs....yoah! I realize though in my not so infinite wisdom that I was almost crippled or killed 2-3 times a year while on it, though none of the accd. would have been my fault...as I have always told my daughter as she was growing up...(and still tell the hard headed little thing, shes 21 now) " break your leg on purpose or on accident, bottom line....it's still broke" \Thanks for the thread Lowrider...brought back a bazillion great memories..oh yeah before the Harley I played in the dirt with about 6-7 different dirt bikes, from Yamaha 125, Yamaha 250BMX, and other assorted dirt diggers...after one particular nasty Evil stunt that broke a few bones and seperated me from what felt like several sq./ft. of skin...I decide that it would be "safer" to get a Harley and ride on the "safe" streets!!Hey, if anyone knows I do, you cam always make a rational excuse for sumpn! "ANY EXCUSEIS A GOOD REASON TO......." great hread!

Dano,I've got a scare above my right eye that after getting alittle sun people still ask me "Where'd you get that bruise?".That was 25 years ago on a KAW 900.Frayed clutch cable.Went to down shift in a sweeping curve and nothing.Got past the fray and it was like dumping the clutch, pulling the front wheel off the ground.(Not a good thing in a curve)I'd agree that there are some poor drivers in Italy.Wife and I last spring are cruising the autostrada about 90 mph and a 911 clipped my mirror at around 130,never touching the brakes and was gone. You don't see many accidents on the autostrada, but when you do they're always bad ones.

Dana, most radical bike has to be a Kawi KX 500, that thing was possesed. Under no circumstances could I keep both wheels on the ground at the same time. Next would have to be my R1, the first 3 gears are a total blur if you can keep the front end down. I also have seen 8500rpms in 6th gear with this bike. I know some will say splat, but I would much rather dump a bike at 100+ than a car any day. Atleast on a bike you will feel no pain and not be a veggie.

Kawasaki 100 followed by a Honda 650 followed by an '86 Sportster 1100 followed by an '88 Low Rider.Craziest ride - 17 years old. Buddy just picked up a Kawasaki 500 which, at that time, was about the screaminest thing on two wheels. He'd had about a week to learn how to operate it. I jump on the back and he cranks it to 115 mph (on the bike's speedo - I'll never forget the number) as we shot down a steep and curvy hill. He did manage to get it stopped in about the length of six football fields. Too damned young and dumb to know any better. Did give me the bug, though. Still love a scooter.

I bought a 1978 CZ 250 brand new when I was a younger man. Still have it and every couple of years I clean it lube it and take it for a ride. I have cantilevered the rear shocks and added air the front and rear, ported the cylinder and added a reed valve. In its day it was the kind. I rode a friends new Honda and realized how much things have changed since I was a boy.

WOW! What a great bunch of stories. It comes as no surprise to me that people who are into guns also dig bikes.YSACRES: Let's DO go for a cruise sometime. I ride east of the mountains all the time. Got to, if ya wanta get outta the rain. A friend of mine (rides a Polaris Victory) and I did the big loop - Stevens Pass to Wenatchee, up through Chelan to Winthrop, and back home over the North Cascades - last October. About 500 miles. That's a pretty steady day's ride.I agree with a few of you guys about the Kawasaki 500cc two-stroke triples. That's also the craziest bike I ever rode. A friend had one back in the seventies and had it all tricked-out with expansion chamber exhaust and I don't know what all. Couldn't keep the wheel on the ground when the thing came on the pipe, even in third gear. Then you couldn't stop it when you had to. Terrible brakes. Also the flimsiest frame of any bike I ever rode. Like it had a hinge in the middle. He traded it for a 750 two-stroke triple and was bummed out because the Kaw. 500 was quite a bit faster than its big brother.Dano: I envy you riding that 500cc two-stroke racer. After watching people like Fast Freddie Spencer and Eddie Lawson ride those things I always wanted to take a couple of laps on one. 200+ horsepower in a 300 pound motorcycle? Amazing!I'm also knocked-out by all of you who own, or used to own, Shovlehead Superglides. Great bikes and worth quite a bit of money today.Keep the motorcycle stuff coming, boys. I eat it up.

I remember the shop owner in 1955 who sold me my first bike saying,"Sometimes its better to hit something than to try and avoid it". That came to me in a flash when I was showing off on a cloverleaf. The turn tightened up. I was too fast and the machine was already scraping the footpegs so I was trapped. I straightened the machine and hit the high curb. My knees reshaped the handlebars as I took a header into the grass. The bike did a 180 over my head and landed near me. Bent the front wheel, frame, forks, bars and tank. I fixed it all but I learned something from that one.

You all know what a Road King looks like.If this works, it should be a picture of Mrs. Mudge's bike. If you can only see the little box, right click on it and click view image in the drop down box.At least that's what works for me.Prayer would help."Oh, great and omnipresent Zeus..." My first and last bike was and is a 51' Triumph Thunderbird, although I have owned eleven other Triumphs in the past 27 years. Dad used to ride Indians and ride/race Triumphs in the fifties. Lost my favorite, a 60' Bonneville 100% restored, in a divorce along with my best guns. Still have the 51' Thunderbird but can't ride anymore with my bum leg. Stopped by the "new" Triumph shop the other day and was shocked to see a departure from tradition: no kick start and shift on left, etc.
Pack slow, fall stable, pull high, hit dead center.

Been riding motorcycles for most of 40 years. Now have a Yamaha V-max. Most sportbikes and all Harleys avoid it on the highway.

if they don't want us to have guns for self defense, what do they want us to have?
