I'm and old geezer who's been riding motorcycles for approx 40 years. Won't bore you with my many stories, but I ride Yamaha V-Max because all the Harleys and most sportbides run and hide when they see me coming.
if they don't want us to have guns for self defense, what do they want us to have?
LowriderI took a ride around the state when I had the 650 special, down to the tri cities, down the gorge, up 101, across the north cascades, over to spokane and home. It rained so hard in Portland my inginton got wet and the bike died on I-5, luckley by a motel. Great fun across the N cascade HY.I got to tell the story about the midget that saved my life.the year was 1980, A bunch of friends went to Missoula Montana for a weekend cruz. six bikes in all. As we crested LoLo pass, greg and the midget whiped out to pass a semi truck, I followed, as we were gaining ground another semi came over the hill at us. Greg slamed on the breaks and I slamed into them. Our foot pegs locked together, their we were, in the wrong lane, doing 65 mph, Next to a semi with another one coming at us. Much to dismay, the midget (doyle) started kicking at my bike, took him about three kicks to break em loose with about 25 yards to spare. When the dude layed on the air horn as he went by us, just scared the crap outa me. YUP and thats how the midget saved my life.
Good for the midget. He's the man! That ride from Lewiston, Id. up the Clearwater River and over Lolo Pass is one of my very favorite runs. I've been that way half a dozen times or more.

you guys talking about two strokes reminded me of the time i road my buddys can-am mx-500 damn thing had a power curve that went from 30 horsepower at 3000 rpm to around 55+ or - horsepower at 3001 rpm.....explosive to say the least rode it at a strip mine and still say it would flip over and slam you in fourth gear if the rear tire wasn't digging a trench and could get a bite....bet that roost was going 60 ft. high! oh to be young and careless again......maybe not...
Don't mean to cast any aspersions on Brit bikes here, oh the hell I don't.....never saw one that had a decent electrical system. Not Daytona. Neither of us do bars or beaches. Been to Sturgis twice. '96 & '00. Rode both times. Roads there are GREAT for bikes but not great enough to beat my butt to death for 4,000 miles round trip. Have friends in Belle Fourche so lodging is no problem. Anybody going that wants to stay in a nice, quiet place, let me know and I'll give you their name & e-mail. Might go in another year or so just for somethin' to do. 7MM....How you gonna' get your butt kicked by a HOG driver. If there is one place where all the Harleys gather that are capable of whipping * on that crotch rocket it would be Sturgis (or Daytona). If you want to see 300+ hp. Harleys they will ablidge you by showing you theri taillights.
mudge I would show it to ya but you ride a Harley and the only thing you will see is the taillight for a few seconds. Kinda like trying to keep up with a vette while driving a beetle, never happen in a million years! here is an article I found for it,Yamaha YZF-R1The sportbike world changed forever with 1998's introduction of the YZF-R1. Lighter and more powerful than any bike in its class - even after two years on the market - it comes into the new millennium with hundreds of detail changes to enhance both performance and durability. The basic package remains unchanged, however, with its ultra-compact and totally stomping inline-Four cranking out a claimed 150 horsepower and its excellent, short-wheelbase chassis providing the handling platform to carry it with confidence - and speed. Some bikes have more horsepower, some bikes weigh less. None put the essential elements of performance into a package so soundly potent. I'm just an old geezer who's been riding for approx 40 years. Presently have a Yamaha V-Max because most of the foreign sport bikes and ALL the Harleys run and hide when they see it coming. I accept any bike lover and his machine as a comrade, but I have a problem accepting the attitude of the Harley Davidson Co. For decades the company has built an inferior machine. They know it and most of the Harley loyal riders know it. If that was what they wanted to build and that was what the faithful wanted to buy that is fine with me, but just be honest about it. The terms like "go fast parts, speed, accerelation, power or smoothness" have never belonged in the same sentence as the word Harley Davidson, with the exception of the smoothness of the twin cam 88 and they have even had an unusually high number of cam bearing failures with the 88 which Harley has declined to warranty repair until actual failure (like when you are on a cross country trip). Even the much praised V-Rod isn't as fast or powerful as my V-Max and my 1999 Maxis built on a design first introduced in 1985. Plus it took both Harley and Porsche to build the V-Rod. Call me Mr. Negative if you want, but since, in my income bracket, I have to get the most gun, car, groceries or motorcycle, etc I can get for my money, I could never bring myself to buy a Harley. But even the riders who hate Japanese bikes should at least be grateful they are there to give Harley competetion. If Harley was the only motorcycle company in the world, you would find yourself paying $40,000 for a motorcycle built on a design from the 1950's.
Mudge I know your just funnin, I would sometime maybe buy a (slow) Harley but right now I love the acceleration and power I get from the jap bikes, BTW Harleys are not the best bikes out there as far as reliabilty, see people working on the more than you do jap bikes and If you ever heard of #1 Cycle Center in State College PA , I went there with a copu[ple of freinds, one was going to get his "dresser" serviced, there was two R1's in the bunch, who do you think got looks!? I think we pissed off the manager because everybody wanted to see the fast ones and not look at $25,000 chrome thingys that make noise. Question for ya, What does a Black Lab and a Harley have in common? They both like to ride on the back of a pickup.Hey, wait a minute, thats why them hogs last so long, you carry them wherever you go. Mudge, I can stir too. Want me to keep pouring it on, I havent even started with the Harley jokes yet.

Hey 7mm, Sounds like you tried one of those Kaw 500 with the radical powerbands. But did you ever stap your skinny butt on one of the 750 tripple's? Now that was a radical machine if I ever saw one. Front end would come up in any gear, just crank the right wrist, no clutch popping needed. Be cruising along, about 100mph,twist the throttle, and up it would go. Too wild for me...but will never forget it.

1998 Harley Low Rider. Traded it for a 12 year old marriage , two young kids, and a new house. The most wonderful experience on the open road a person can have. Next best thing to sex. Enjoyed it for 2 1/2 years and even did the Sturgis thing 2 years ago taking the long way from north Houston, all through Colorado and Wyoming. What a rush riding that hog. Sometimes I wonder if I made the right trade. Really miss the bike and probably will never get the chance to have another one. I'm starting to cry, so I will stop here.
Lowrider,Finally got the Pan finished, came out just fine.Put a solo seat with pogo mount and beaded windshield, 2" whitewalls and all white King of the Highway trim on it. Probably be up your way this spring to show it off to the ex.Keep the shiny side up!berto

Bought my first bike in '65, a Honda 165 scrambler. Since then I have competed in motocross and and owned a number of bikes. The current is an '86 K100-RT Beemer I bought new in '88. It has been from New Mexico to New York, South Dakota to Virgina and all over them Rocky mountians, "the marrow of the world."
Good for you, Berto. Sounds damn nice. If you ride up this way be sure and give me a call. I'll do likewise if I get down there. And I always DO get down that way at least once in the summer. All right, HeDog. Sounds like some fine touring. Man, I love riding the mountains. Those K-Model Beemers are great bikes. How many miles do ya have on it? Glad to see this thread is still on page one. Lots of great bikes and great bike stories listed.Anybody ever own a bike with a rotary shifter? You know the kind. Down (or up) to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th(if so equipped), and one more click right back into 1st at 50 mph.My brother had a Bridgestone 175cc with that type of shift mechanism. While I never actually stuck it back into 1st gear at high road speeds (I think you would've had to stomp it with all your might to get it engaged), I sure as hell gave it a try more than once. The bike was only a 4-speed and when in 4th it sure seemed like there was another gear to go. Step down on it once more (neutral at the top, all four gears down), and she'd go into neutral. Hit it again and the gear-grinding noise coming from the transmission would wake the dead. If you'd ever been able to actually engage 1st gear at that speed it would've probably lunched everything (engine and tranny both) and maybe thrown yer * over the handlebars.I know several of the two-stroke Japanese bikes from the sixties had those morphadite shifters.

Lowrider it only has about 30K on the clock, but almost all are touring miles, 2,500-3,500 mile trips.Sandman I rode one of those Kaw 750 triples, the friend that owned it said get it out on the interstate and get on it. Dropped it into 4th at 80 mph and the front wheel lifted a foot. 'bout scared me wet!
I have a one-kick 56 Panhead that I've had since 1978. 6 volt, straight-leg frame sitting in my garage right now. Custom made one-of-a-kind Triple Trees to accomadate a 1970 Sporster front end. I've got stories that would take me years to type. 46 years old and will do 120 mph.

Well, no way can I let this thread re-surface without posting one more myself. That sounds like a mighty fine panhead, man. What modifications have been done to the engine? I had a chance to buy a bone-stock '58 Duo Glide ten years ago for $9500. Two-tone blue and white. The damn thing was beautiful. But I'd just bought my new FXRS and didn't really want the additional debt. I've always wanted a '58 and figured I'd pass on that one and look hard for another in a couple of years. Well, I pissed away the best deal I'll probably ever find by not buying the first one. Now, the real stock, real cherry '58s are 20 grand or more and there are fewer and fewer of them to be had.Well, I never claimed to be smart.

Ok, I'm a late poster here. Dad got me a Benelli 125 when I was 15. (He just didn't want me driving his car!) Too many to list since then, and I still have a couple of '66 Trumpets.Ed, my 250 Penton had a similar powerband, but if you really wanted a thrill, you should have ridden one of the first Suzuki 400 mxers. Not only a roadrace powerband, but it also had a very lightweight flywheel and crummy suspension. Yahoo!I got the Penton after campaigning a Husky 250 for a year. The husky was the exact opposite, and I had a helluva a time with the Penton until I began riding it like a 125. Then I started finishing well again. Powerband was wide enough, it just started fairly high up the range and very abruptly. If you kept the revs up, the powerband was smooth.Still have a few scars from the racing days though, from a couple of those sky-ground-sky-ground episodes.redcedars
Had a couple of bikes. Then switched to air boats. My personal all time rush.Mind blowing to go 70mph forward and sideways at the same time, With no brakes. We droped one betwen the lanes of I-10 one rainey day. When the state trooper got us we were doing 75mph.Talk about a a*# chewing.

53 yrs of riding , jeez guess I am telling my age here, still ride!!!!
Currently riding a 95, 30th aniversary mdl Ultra Classic, I live down here in motorcycle heaven, Close to Daytona, bike week, and biketoberfest, currently looking for a basket case Sportster, 1984 and up, want to let my lady build it, so she will appreciate what I have gone through over the years
Started at 14 with a Wizzer motorbike & 48 years later my
750 Yamaha Virugo is the biggest I have owned. I would like a new bike but no one makes what I want. The old Honda Silver Wing
or Pacific Coast would be fine . A BMW with bags & fairing would be
perfect but the smallest one they make now is as big as a car.
I have long wondered why the motorcycles have grown so large &
I need to ask if perhaps the larger bikes handle the wind better?
Where I live we often have very heavy winds, fourty MPH or more
are not uncommon & when a gust like that hits you from the side
it takes some of the fun out of it. We had one burst of wind a
few months ago that destroyed five garage doors including mine.
My favorite bike I ever had was a BMW R-25 that I had while in the
army in Germany. Best trip was to Zurich, Switzerland.
Gruntled the larger bikes do handle the wind better. A fairing makes a world of difference in how beat up you feel at the end of 850 miles. BUT, with side winds at 35-40mph+ you are still riding down the road leaned into the wind, and pushed around on the lane. Makes for a really nerve wracking, tiring day. I turned west out Souix Falls headed for the Black Hills, and what had been a tail wind was now hitting my left side at about 30-40mph. I had been riding for about 7 hours in the wind and was beat. I quit in Mitchell, planning to leave early. At 5:00 I pulled out headed west. The temp had dropped to forty and I was freezing but kept going. Out on the glaciated prairie I could see these round glacial circs. Every one of those ponds was seaming like a witch's caldron and fog was drifing across the interstate. I would ride into a fog bank where I couldn't see 50 feet in front of me, then suddenly I would ride out of the fog, see two deer on the side of the road and ride back into the fog. Only time I can remember, when I preyed not to see deer!
2000 FXSTB a.k.a. "the nightrain" Actually I call it the "crippler". You see with it's factory forward controls and the factory drag bar it is strictly a boulevard cruiser albeit a fast one at that. VERY hard on the back on any journeys lasting more than one hour. Other than that I am tickled pink with my hog. Did I tell you she was counter-balanced?
just bought a 2002 honda shadow ace--my first real bike--sure love to unwind on it--no price for that therapy--i ride with my neighbor who is in his late 70s---he only rides one way--WIDE OPEN--wish i would have discovered this outlet years ago----
Would one of you BIKERS(ie. HOG drivers) explain to Mr. Mobbs the difference betweenBIKES and motorcycles. Never mind...I'll do it.....AGAIN
A "BIKE" will have the words HARLEY-DAVIDSONon it (not less than 42 places) and LOTS of chrome. It's sound will be throaty and LOUD.
yet somehow......pleasant.
On the other hand, a motorcycle will have vast expanses of purple, green, red or yellow bodywork. Sometimes a combination of ALL of these colors. It will have no chrome. It will sound like a swarm of bees.
