Well, I finally did it. Been promising myself that I would ever since litte Baby ATF was born. I've got the shakes. I'm constantly hungry. I'm going to put on 30 pounds, I can tell already. I'm also not going to use Skoal as a crutch. I plan on still having a dip every now and again, but not until I beat this smoking monster. Help me Obi Wan Kenobi: You're my only hope.Where am I?

Some sort of nicotine gum/patch/inhaler step down program would make it 10 times easier.Look into it. Trust me, I've been there before.

I'm 56. I smoked Camel regulars (no filter)for 44 years. On June 17 I lit a cigarette and it made me cough. I put it out and said "I don't need this shxt" Haven't smoked since. No gum, no patch ,no nothing. All I did was to say I QUIT. To smoke now would make me a liar, and I'm not.It all boils down to how big are you? If it's bigger 'n you, you lose, if you're bigger'n it you win.Hope to say some day ' Smoking, hell I quit that 30 years ago'

Holy cow, what a coincidence. I decided to quit today too! I am not sure I can do this, though. I've been smoking for 14 years now. It's only been about 17.5 hours now and I've already chewed my Kodiak tobacco twice. I really, really want a smoke right now.Hey, good luck Evil!G36

You can both do it.Don`t use food, candy,or chewing tobacco for a crutch.Take it one day at a time.Sometimes you will have to take it one minute at a time.Just tell yourself I`m not going to smoke today and stick with it.If you cave in and have one don`t give up.I never used nicotine patches or anything when I finally quit.I did it over 20yrs ago for a pretty young thing.I wonder where she is today.

Hi guys...I quit 16 years ago, Cold Turkey, after smoking 3 packs of camels non-filter daily for 22 years. Hardest thing I ever did!! Please don't continue with the snuff or chew as this is NOT quitting tobacco. Your only trading one nasty thing for another and the chance of ill effects from snuff & chew is 44% greater than cigarettes. Good luck to you and I'm here for ya if you need to talk to get thru this ordeal.

Thanks for all the support thus far! Muchos gracias!I've smoked for the past 6 years and I've also the chewed Skoal the last two years as well. Like I said, I'm definately quitting smoking. No going back. I'm also not going to use any chewing tobacco while I'm quitting the smokes. With any luck, I'll quit the Skoal by proxy. So, here I sit with my Twisted Tornado Bubblicious bubble gum and Teriyaki Snuff fake chewing tobacco. I'm going to kill the next man that looks at me cross-eyed.

pops401 couldn't have been more right when he said, "All I did was to say I QUIT. To smoke now would make me a liar, and I'm not. It all boils down to how big are you? If it's bigger 'n you, you lose, if you're bigger'n it you win."I quit smoking 2 packs a day in January 1963. Haven't taken one puff since. But there's hardly a day goes by I don't think about how good a cigarette would taste. But I'm bigger'n it and I intend to win.

I quit useing those nasty stink sticks over 15 years ago. Made the same mistake that you are, useing chew as a substitute. Believe me it is harder to quit chewing that it is smokeing. I know, been there, done that. Just hang in there and remember, IT IS MIND OVER MATTER. Best of luck

I smoked KOOLS for thirty years when I finnally decided to quit I used Wellbutrin SR for a month. It was supposed to calm me down so I could quit ,but I didn't feel any different and you can't drink on them because it causes seizures. Then 11:42am Oct. 4, 1999 I put out my last cigarette, and haven't smoked since.Nicotene addiction leaves your system after three days after that it's all habit.I used Altoids because every time I reached for a cigarette I had something to put in my mouth and it was menthol, also Altoids are about the same size as a pack of cigarettes so I put them in my Tee-Shirt pocket where I used put my Cigarettes.I had to quit I smoked in my sleep with out knowing it,and had to keep newspaper next to my bed and couch to cough up phlegm into because I coughed up so much. As soon as I quit I stopped coughing up Phlegm. You Can Do It!! Good Luck!!

Patches don't work. Other tabacco don't work. The only way is to make up your mind and stay with it. Keep a pack in your house and your vehicle when you quit- so you know you can have one anytime. Beleive me- it's the "I don't and can't have one" that will get you. If you have smokes near and know you can have one anytime- you won't have that helpless feeling. You will be in control..........! Ciggs. have the worst addiction ever! It is a bad DRUG! You can smoke ciggs. You can get drunk to a stuper! Which kills your lungs, liver, kiddneys- but you can't smoke Marry Jane for cancer or for fun-- go fiqure! (NO I DO NOT SMOKE MARRY JANE!)- go fiqure!

Evil,Good for you, somehow I never figured you for a smoker.Anyhow, when I worked as a paramedic/fire service, I saw alot of old folks with emphyzema, walk around with an oxygen bottle, and they just refused to quit smoking. They are so addicted by this time, only way they quit is to die, it's sad, to see someone you love waste away, like that.Tabacco in any form is not only addictive but has no value whatsoever nutrien wise. Good choice, I am rootin for you.

Evil, I tried everything over the years. Patch, gum, pills and even sucked on those things that is supposed to cut down on nicotene gradually. Nothing worked. A little over two years ago I was told I needed a bypass. Layed them down and have never looked at one since. Gained 36 pounds. Urge still hits me now and then but goes away in about 2 to 5 minutes. Fear is a great motivator. Rosie

Evil and g36.....good luck to both. My dad quit about two years ago and took the money he would have spents on cigs and put it into a coffee can. Wasn't long before he had over $2000 saved. Bought a damn nice shotgun with cash left over. Maybe you guys could reward your efforts with a new addition to the family?

It's been just over 18 hours since my last cigarette. However, I was asleep for a good portion of that!So far today, in addition to my normal calorie intake, I've had:2 packs of Bubblicious bubble gum, 3 cans of that non-tobacco jerky chew stuff, one large bag of Doritos, and I chewed off the majority of the hair from my goatee. But I feel GREAT! Who cares if it's only in my head, but I feel like my lungs are getting about twice the air than they were just yesterday! My breathes come easier and I have to take fewer of them. Thanks a million for your support. I've got my family rootin' for me, but it's always good to have your friends back you up. Sniff Sniff. I gittin' all emotional-like. I've "quit" a hundred times, but I can feel it. I'm gonna make it this time. Probably the toughest thing about quitting smoking, is that it is a routine. I mean, it's hard for me to imagine what I'll do instead to keep myself occupied. Doing something all day long, every day for six years puts it in your grain just a little bit!Ah well. Saving my tobacco cash sounds like a good idea. I'll put it in a jar and use the cash to buy myself a Barrett Light Fifty.

Ok yall can start kicking me now. I'm on sick leave now from a hernia operation I had last Thursday, the hernia is a result of a open heart and a aortic aneurysm surgery I had almost three years ago, and the same year i had a vein replaced in my right leg. I have to go back March 1 for a stent for a 90% blockage in the artery to one kidney. Still smoking, it is a tough thing to give up, but I know I have to, by the way I'm not that old (51) tried the patch and pills with no luck.

Good for you Evil....The key is to change habits. Take a walk after a meal when you usually have a smoke. Chew gum or have a piece of hard candy at the normal smoke breaks you take. The hardest part for me was when I had a beer. When I did not have a smoke in the other hand when I had a brew, I felt unbalanced. Good luck buddy, we are pulling for you... [This message has been edited by William81 (edited 01-24-2002).]

Pops401 you are almost my twin except I am 53. I smoked camel non filters for thirty nine years at the rate of three packs a day. This past June 13 when the ambulance brought me to the emergency entrance of the hospital I was met by a white coated gentleman that said "Hi I'm your cardioligist and I'd like to be the first to congratulate you on being a brand new smoker". They proceded to do a quadruple bypass and send me on my way. I have not wanted one since I left the hospital. So far no weight gain. Hang in there. You hear it from everyone before you quit but it is the best thing you can do. The part about food tasting better never came true for me but you do start to smell a lot of things you didn't before. I should have a whole pile of money around here some place from not buying them anymore but I can't seem to find it.
    MONEY TALKS mine says good-bye

Well, I lose. I am home after another crappy day at work and I had a smoke. I think I only succeeded as long as I did (about 19 hours) because I didn't bring any to work and I had chewing tobacco. I'm ashamed that I'm so weak, I wake up every day wishing I could quit as I cough constantly. People at work sometimes ask if I have a cold, I say yes. Damn.Evil, its up to you now. Stay strong man.Good luck.G36

Hardest thing I ever did. I had a real narcotic withdrawal with chest spasms. It was fear rather than reason that made me finally quit. Cigarettes were $.34 a pack then. You have to fight the urge mostly when you drink alcohol, coffee, after meals and at parties.I had a colon cancer operation six years ago that might have been caused by ingesting those nice carcinogens for 20 years.

In November, 1996, I finally figured out how to quit. I had tried to quit those damned things off and on four times in the four previous months. I had to buy new ash trays, lighters and such four times before I learned the secret. Here it is, (Don't let the secret out)!I purchased some 20 mg Nicotine Patches from the store, (wished they had 50 mg ones). When I just could stand it any longer and was unable to talk myself out of smoking, I would take one of these patches and cut it in half with the scissors. I put one half on my arm and chewed the other half. (Boy, do they taste bad!) By then, the chew would make me very sick and I would forget my need to smoke. Thank God I only had to use up one box of these Nicotine patches before I was able to continue without any help. I'm not sure what you would do if you are addicted to "Chew." Maybe if you want to quit that you might try chewing a cigarette.....maybe?Good Luck Guys....You CAN do it!!!!

Quit smoking last October. Used the patches for about 3 weeks. Started putting away $3.00 (the price of a pack) a day. A few more months and I am going to pick up a new Glock with what I saved from not smoking. Can't think of a better thing to do with ex-smoke money.

Evil, I smoked 35+ years & was doing 6 packs a day at one point in the later years (no editorials, please, type AAA compulsive personality & we all have our faults). After *MANY tries, finally kicked the monkey a little over a year ago. Couldn't do the patches, but the gum helped a lot. Any time the urge becomes irresitable, go brush your teeth, take a run / walk, anything to postpone that puff just a little longer. After a few days, the urge isn't quite so strong. A pic of little ATF close at hand will be a powerful motivator. Stay away from smokers for a while if you can. Be sure you don't have any smokes hidden away in an old coat where they might lead you into temptation if unexpectedly found. Red Cross Lung Assoc / local hospitals have courses that might help. Hypnotherapy helps. Man, I've been in your shoes and it was the toughest thing I've ever done. I'd rather pull my own teeth w/ a pair of vice grips than go through it again, but you *CAN* do it if you grit your teeth and fight.

Evil-- If some big bad dude was coming after you and was going to kill you, would you stand toe-to-toe with him and duke it out? Would you kick him in the balls, gouge his eyes out, bite his ears off, and do anything else it would take to keep from being killed?Well, cigarettes are that bad dude. They will kill you...but only if you let them. They are tough--they have you adicted. The question is: how tough are you?

Way to go!If I can offer a bit of advice it would be quit the Skoal as well. I'm tobacco free now for 4 years. I smoked regular Camels (tried to cut back by buying Marlboros but ended up breaking the filters off and smoking them backwards.) Went to Skoal, didn't spit (couldn't spit it right, ended up lookin' like my Arkansas cousins) just swallowed it and drank mucho liquids. I decided to quit after my Big Brother died from in-operable cancer, took about 4 months for me to figure it out and walked away from it. Still get the urge from time to time. I'll offer a prayer for your continued strength and resolve.
