Who here carries a 22lr handgun for self defense?

And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche

I carry my little Beretta .22 auto Bobcat only when I am dressed in something in which I can't carry a more appropriate gun. It fits in just about any pants pocket. It's a good quality reliable firearm and better than going unarmed, but never a FIRST choice, for me.

I have a S&W 651 2" in 22 magnum. With the recently new Hornady short-barrel 22 mag round I sure wouldn't want to get shot by it.

Occasionally a North American Arms 22 mag revolver. For when you just can't carry your pistol.

Too many people ignore what a .22 LR CAN do and concentrate on what other cartridges can do better. Guys, there will always be a better cartridge than your favorite for a given use under given conditions, at least in someone's opinion. Concentrate on the facts of what a round CAN do and then make sure you train yourself to maximize its potential. [:)]

I have carried a .22 for back-up in the past. They are under-rated. Sure, they are not immediate man stoppers, but they are a lot better than harsh language.

While I don't carry one for that purpose, they are certainly capable of making a scumbag 'Tango Uniform' if you do what you mentioned.[:)]

That makes as much sense as NJ outlawing hollow points.

The caliber restriction in Texas only applies to the live fire portion of the testing prior to obtaining the license:

    Section 411.188

"An applicant may not be certified unless the applicant demonstrates, at a minimum, the degree of proficiency that is required to effectively operate a handgun of.32 caliber or above."

There is nothing in the code that indicates a minimum caliber to be carried by a liscensee.

    Since when?

I think you mean you have to qualify with 38 / 9mm minimum

Although I hesitate to argue with my friend Topkick, I believe you can test with a 32 or larger. As mentioned by CDMead.

I have on occasion, and I'll carry one while backpacking as a pot gun (and last0ditch defensive tool..'cause it's better than nothing and there aren't many big bears where I hike).

Any gun in the hand is always better than one in the safe.

Nope, but it beats nothing, I think.

.22's are NASTY little bullets...get shot in the upper chest just under the collar bone and the bullet could end up in your joy bag, leaving a path of destruction the entire trip, seriously...[;)]

Carrying a .22 is better than being unarmed, but not by much.

Unless you're within arms length, carrying a micro revolver(Naa) is pretty much the same as beig unarmed. Maybe the noise will scare them off, but you'll do as much damage throwing the gun at them...

.357 Magnum vs.22, which would win? In a case I read, a trooper armed with a 4" .357 using Win. 145 gr. Silvertips tackled a bad guy armed with a NAA Mini revolver. The cop was clad in body armor, the opponent was not. The cop fired 6 rounds -all hits- and the crook got off one round to the torso -fatal. The bullet entered under the arm and hit the heart. The killer weighed approximately 400 lbs. and the .357 slugs got mired down in the fat; he survived. Strange but true.

.22 LR is better than a .25 auto round. .25 auto is one of the most anemic rounds for self defense.

..At one time, I carried a Beretta Minx in .22 short. It's what I had and was easily hidden. At 15-20 feet, I could keep them in the head, neck, thorax area. Not much of a stopper, but being shot with anything will stop most attackers. That's what I'd hoped anyway.

I wouldn't want to be in front of a guy throwing plums at me either, but I'm not paralyzed by fear of either.

.22s can be quite deadly without a doubt, if you can hit your target in a critical area(or enough times in basically any area). The problem there is that that particular platform isnt exactly designed to be easy to attain accuracy with. The gun themselves are tiny and difficult to manipulate. The barrel barely exists.

The gun does both of its intended functions admirably. One, it's novel(the principal selling point). Two, its a gun that's small and light enough to carry 24/7/365 with total concealability. Beyond that, it's a stunning failure in just about every other capacity.

No disrespect intended because I love .22's but I'd rather have a good knife in close encounters [;)]

I've seen enough .22LR wounds to promise you I have zero desire to get shot with one.

I've also killed many a critter with a 40 gr hp .22LR, my favorite round and the one I carry if a .22 is in my pocket.

I have no problem with carrying one. Yeah, it might be small but I can empty the mag faster and more accuritely than anything else.
Top that with the fact I can practice with it daily if I wanted to and still be able to afford ammo.

My wife carries an LCR 22 or a Tomcat .32 as her EDC. Yeah, I've watched that video before.

I figure a guy preying on a woman is probably pretty weak to begin with, so if she resists and pokes a couple holes in him, he'll turn tail and run like the weakling he is.

    Me, I carry a .957 Lazza-JDJ-rex-nitro-saurus. Magnum.

Been shot with a lr and a mag, both hollow points, and I am impressed by neither. I didn't realize I was shot untill about a half hour later when I looked to see if that bee that stung me was still there and only found a hole. Once in the upper arm and once in the back of my calf.

A friend of mine is a retired state trooper. In addition to his S&W 28, later a Beretta 9mm, he carried a tiny 4 shot 22 revolver as last resort. He never used it as such, but I'm sure that at the range that would have been involved, it would have been effective.

I have to disagree. Ive carried a 22, still do from time to time. Ammo makes the big difference. I wouldnt be as confident carrying LRN... But the old aguila Quick Shock ammo is amazing. The new 'segmented hollowpoints' are not quite as good in my opinion. With the quick shock I shot a rabit in the neck- about a 15 yard shot- with a 10/22 and almost took the head off.
