Who here carries a 22lr handgun for self defense?

    I prefer a .22 magnum.....Grendel P-30 with a full 30 round magazine. [^]

Ditto! With an extra mag in my pocket.

My wife carries an LCR 22 or a Tomcat .32 as her EDC. Yeah, I've watched that video before.

I figure a guy preying on a woman is probably pretty weak to begin with, so if she resists and pokes a couple holes in him, he'll turn tail and run like the weakling he is.

    Me, I carry a .957 Lazza-JDJ-rex-nitro-saurus. Magnum.

Do you load that with the wimpy 650 grain hollow points, or the 1300 grain armor piercing? You know that bad guys and bears are both growing at an amazing rate. To think years ago people thought a 45ACP was big enough, those were the days.[:D]

Is the "Nitro-saurus" belt fed or is it in pistol form?[:p]

Carrying a .22 is better than being unarmed, but not by much.

Unless you're within arms length, carrying a micro revolver(Naa) is pretty much the same as beig unarmed. Maybe the noise will scare them off, but you'll do as much damage throwing the gun at them...

Tell that to the widow of SC State Trooper Mark Coates.

Yep, perhaps the most emotional and chilling video I have ever seen. One round from I believe a .22lr derringer and Trooper Coates died on scene, after Trooper Coates put 5 or 6 .357 rounds center mass in the POS that shot him. The irony of the story, the scumbag lived and Trooper Coates didn't.

Now, as far carrying a .22 for defense, I have personally seen the damage a simple .22lr can do, and based on the video, 13 inches of penetration is impressive. So, no, I would not have issues carrying a .22lr as a defense.

22LR will kill without a doubt, but i would not trust it to STOP a threat. Remember you may have to shoot through a heavy leather jacket or a wallet......or maybe your flat screen TV if he wont drop it.

.22 LR is better than a .25 auto round. .25 auto is one of the most anemic rounds for self defense.
Exactly, will take a 22LR over a 25 any day of the week.

I've carried a 4' S&W model 63 around here for so long the grips are polished smooth...
If I was headed for town I would slip a 2 1/2" 66 in it's place.. but don't go to town often.

i have in the past and would do so again if the need arises , better to have just a 22 than nothing at all

    +1

    Rule #1 in a gun fight. Have a gun. A 22 is a gun.

..4" 63 is one of my favorites also. It goes bang everytime, not something I can say for the Walther P22. Someone mentioned the Aguila Quick Shock ammo. I still have a few boxes and it is some impressive stuff.

..That quad belongs in the back of my pickup....[:D] Wish I had pics of my uncle in Korea. He commanded a company of gun trucks with quad fifties and Bofors.

..That's the one. Uncle Frank gave a newspaper interview in which he stated that although they were supposed to be anti-aircraft, they never saw a MiG. They fired over a million rounds of .50 and something like 150k of 40 mm at ground targets.

perp got lucky, plain and simple.

the bottom line is that, yes a .22 can be deadly if you put it exactly where it needs to do(or make up for bad placement with volume of fire). the fact remains that, with micro .22's getting that shot where it needs to go from more than a few feet away isnt as easy as it is with guns you can actually get enough of a grip on to properly index.

im not saying carrying a .22 is worthless. clearly that would be a ridiculous statement. what im saying is that if you were to graph the various caliber on a line with one side being unarmed and the other side being top of the food chain armed, a .22 is going to be pretty close to the unarmed side.

Beats nuthin for sure, but I can't help remembering a guy my mom worked for back in the '60's. Left Juneau for a conference in Sanfrancisco, got mugged and shot multiple time in the head with a .22 rimfire. Inoperable. They left the slugs in but he came back to work.

A .22 can represent a lethal blow to the head, that can be accomplished at greater than arm's length. Same with a .32 or a .380. But all three require a gun with at least some kind of handling qualities, which to me means a PPK or similar, no NAA's. I'm also not a believer in hollow-point bullets in those little guns when fired for center-of-mass, for much the same reason that got Officer Coates killed: simply rearranging the beer and mashed potatos in the gut of a violent 300-pound felon, is only going to antagonize him.

I knew a cop who got gastric reflux from two square hits in the stomach from a .38 with poor-penetrating ammunition, and who pulled his M28 Smith to settle the matter.

All of which means a gun's limitations determines what should be aimed for.

It's a belt-fed pistol. two barrels. side by side 1911-style.
