My family owns 250 acres of awsome hunting land in northern Illinois. I hunt it with a couple of good long time friends. If we catch trespassers anytime of the year we call the sheriff or if they're hunting, we call the game warden. In Illinois if you're hunting private property without permission, your hunting license is void. We don't allow ANY trespassers. We don't grant permission to anyone but my friends and family to use the land. Hunting land is quite scarce in Northern Illinois. I used to find a treestand every so often on the property. chained and locked even! A pair of bolt cutters and presto, I have a new stand! I saw some guys on the edge of our property a number of years ago and hopped on the atv to go confront them. They took off but left behind a nice blanket, binoculars, a box of slugs, and a thermos with hot coffee!! Thank you very much!
Everyone seems to complain that they have no where to hunt. Before we had the farm, I never had a problem. I asked permission of farmers in June and July. I would dress nicer and show up in the afternoon. After hunting, if we were sucessful I'd always offer the farmer some of what we got. If he accepted it, I'd clean it for him. I'd bring him a small X-mas present like a sausage and cheese tray. I'd stop mid summer just to visit. After we bought our farm, he'd call and ask if I'd like to come hunting or if I had the time, how about a quick visit? I never made as much time as I should have. But, I was young then.
I think you're 1/2 way there. Go talk to the land owner with your boy months before the season. Ask him if there is anything you guys can do to help out a weekend or two. You know, put up hay or fix some fences, shovel out a barn, paint a shed, etc. Chances are, not only will you get permission. He might not let anyone else hunt the property! And your boy will learn a little more and you may make a new friend.
Good luck and congratulations to you for taking a youngster hunting.
Sorry to hi-jack your thread!
