hmmm, even .308 is a little long for the AR-15.[:D][:D]
Some will die in hot pursuit
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain
Some will die in hot pursuit
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain

The 308 out performs the 30-06 with bullets 168gr and less
In what way does the 308 Winchester out perform the 30-06?
It doesn't. Some factory loading 308 is probably being compared to some other factory loading '06 to skew the comparison. In the real world we know the truth.
In the Army, a friend outshot all Garand 30-06 comers while using a 10 shot British Lee Enfield 303.
Speed and accuracy were the criteria.
Today, I believe you can buy a 308 conversion (Ishapore?).
You can chop it and remove unnecessary hardware.
Keep in mind any light scout or other light high powered rifle will require a muzzle brake for other than an occasional shot.
No free lunch.
Those recommending an M-1 Garand haven't humped one with full military load.
Carrying one from car trunk to a shooting bench doesn't count.

I've walked a very long way with lots of weight and an m1 garand. I still recommend one.[:D]
The SMLE is probably the most overlooked, as a fighting gun. The design is the most rugged ever fielded, and the easiest to maintain. Power is unquestioned. When Lord Roberts was appointed Infantry Commander in Britain prior to WW1, he forbade the use of magazine cutoffs and insisted that the guns be fed only from the magazines. He invented the technique of rapid fire whereby the trigger was pulled with the ring finger, which inside of 100 yards put the SMLE on an about equal footing with semi-auto designs.
The steel specs of the Ishapore .308 SMLE's can be found on the Indian Ordnance Factories website, and I think these guns are real sleepers.
Given the asking prices on decent SMLEs these days for a little more money an AR15 can be had...spare me the complaints of the 5.56...and it's a much better fighting rifle than a bolt gun.

I have even been looking at the standard Enfield in .303. 10 rds is hard to beat in a sturdy reliable bolt action battle rifle already proven in the worst conditions. I just don't know about the availability of the .303 ammo
I guess I will jump in with my grand idea. If I am in a fight and I have a rifle, that will be my fighting rifle, no matter the caliber or type. [8D] I just so hope it is not a single shot, but if it is I will aim true and reload quick.
Just smile and say nothing, let them guess how much you know.
Actually in an up close and personal battle such as ducking in and out of buildings and dodging around corners I can shoot my old lever action rifles better than I can a scoped rifle. I can get on target a whole lot faster with open sights than I can with a scope.
In that case I'd much rather be shooting my Great Grandpa's old Marlin 1889 .38-40 that was made in 1892 that is on top in the photo or my Uncle's old Winchester 94 .30-30 that was made in 1951 that's shown in the center of the photo. The bottom one is a Marlin 94 .44 Mag made in the 70's that's a good shooting rifle also.
Many years ago Roses dept stores sold a lot of military surplus firearms I bought a new in the cosmoline SMLE in 308 from the Isaphore arsenal .This was 20 plus years ago .I finally cleaned it and put it together a few years ago ,still have not shot it Guess I need to get it out and make a fighting gun out of it .

No need to sweat. You can get an Ar-15 chambered in 30-06.

The rifle on the far left is the Cobb MCR in 30-06. The AR in 30-06 is a little larger than the typical AR-15.

Anyone else feeling suckered?
Maybe he's just off looking for his fighting cartridge?

I have been looking at an enfield though. I love the idea of 10rds of ammo in a fast handling bolt action rifle. Still looking

A better battle gun would be a AR 15 in .223. Lighter, penetrating.
.308 is nice but you are already outperforming it in 06.
