Officials announce proposal that would establish California as separate nation

Will California secede from US following Trump's election?

A proposal for California to secede from the United States was submitted to the Secretary of State's Office Thursday.

The proposed "Calexit" initiative - its name borrowed from the UK's "Brexit" departure from the EU - would ask voters to repeal part of the state constitution that declares California an inseparable part of the U.S.

A recent poll found that one in three California residents would support a possible secession from the U.S. due to their opposition to President Trump. No mention has been made of the president in the proposal.

If the proposal qualifies for the ballot and is approved by voters, it could be a step to a future vote on whether the state would break away from the rest of the nation.
More on this...

Poll reveals 1 in 3 Californians support 'Calexit'
UK official won't make promises on timing of Brexit plan

Secretary of State Alex Padilla said the group behind the proposal, Yes California Independence Campaign, was cleared to begin attempting to collect nearly 600,000 voter signatures needed to place the plan on the ballot.

"In our view, the United States of America represents so many things that conflict with Californian values, and our continued statehood means California will continue subsidizing the other states to our own detriment, and to the detriment of our children," the Yes campaign's website says.

Similar attempts to establish California as a nation, or break it into multiple states, have failed.

The proposed constitutional amendment, titled California Nationhood, would also ask voters to repeal language that states the U.S. Constitution is the supreme law. If approved, it calls for scheduling a vote in 2019 to ask voters, "Should California become a free, sovereign and independent country?"

"America already hates California, and America votes on emotions," Marcus Evans, vice president of Yes California told the Los Angeles Times. "I think we'd have the votes today if we held it."

The campaign must submit the valid voter signatures by July 25 to qualify for the ballot.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

A tribute a shining example of how much damage liberal communist leftest trash can do. The state of California is a paradise, so beautiful from one end to the other. Tahoe, PCH, hell Disneyland but I would never want to live there. They should be ashamed of themselves!!

Calif is just like Oregon the Whole state is run by Major Cities along I-5. Go inland and the folks have a completely different Idea how their state should be run.

Calif with L.a. and San Fran. Oregon with Eugene and Portland.

My wife says if they do she will agree to move out. So where do I sign?
I figure if they did they would remove all the fences on the Mexican border & within a few years California would become another state of Mexico.

Any way to help? Would global warming melt enough ice to raise the sea enough to put more pressure on the fault line? Is there one spot, like the hole in the dike of fables, that we can drive a wedge to make it happen?

Hmmmm, now that I think of it, if the sea rises enough, it could take out both liberal coasts.

    +1 on global warming [:D]

Only if Trump negotiates the split and a "corridor" about 100 miles wide between the "other" U.S. and the Pacific is included.

    Then,, bye/bye.

Stupid libs don't realize that this past election was a fluke cause because smug Hilary supporters were too lazy to go to the polls when they thought they had it in the bag......or if they did go they wanted to send a message and voted for Stein.

Hope they do, we could damn up all the rivers that they use for drinking water and watch them all day. California gets 90% of its water from rivers flowing into it like the green river, without that water they would all die

I wonder if any of those involved in the movement realize they get a significant portion of their electric power and fresh water from outside the state? I realize California has some oil reserves and decent wells, but just how do the enviro whackos behind this movement feel about using it?

Folks that are behind this have no idea of self sufficiency no idea of survival, and no idea just generally.

I can't even fathom a bigger failure than an "Independent" California. It would be acquired by Mexico faster than they can blink... assuming Mexico still wants it back.

Reality will slap them right between their blue eyes, chartreuse hair, I love Socialism sign and lip piercings with a sledge hammer. I know California is a humongous powerhouse economically. That powerhouse runs fine until the pigeons of CalPERS and the welfare state comes home to roost.

Go ahead. They will find themselves very short of water in a real hurry as most of it comes from adjoining states who would be more than happy to re-negotiate water rights. There goes their farming industry.

Also consider if they did we may never have a democratic president again and they will still have to deal with conservative policy. Their votes are the only bargaining chip they have over the rest of the country. With those gone NOBODY will care about CA.

You know all those nazi fruit check points???? Well lets turn them into boarder control entry points, with a fee. Every time a citizen of the liberal country want to come here, no problem. You will have to go through immigration though, and have no rights, like any other foreign visitor. We shall treat them just like we treat our neighbors to the south. Oh, and we shall establish some new laws, starting with a 5 day only visitation permit. 100 dollars. Highway usage fee of 50 dollars a day, for upkeep on major highways and such. Strict no gun policy for visitors, no exception. Feel free to add to these laws and restrictions at will.........Oakie

Be a bad deal if Mexico gets California.

It would give Mexico, their allies and the cartails two fronts, one containing 850 miles of coastline with a straight shot to Columbia.

You would not have to worry about getting produce or much of anything else from from them. The state would be laid to waste like a third world country by the time the power struggle for control
    was over.

The only parts of CA that want to leave are SF, LA and sadly SD has fallen too, maybe a few other odds & ends but not much. Let them secede and create their own liberal bantustans.

Typical libturds, can only see to the next hour. They have no comprehension of long term, unless it's something dubious like "man caused global climate change". Not that it has a chance of ever happening, California would be a smoking dump in one year.

Yeah let California appeal to the world court for an election to succeed from The Union! It will never happen in our time until the system of fiat money fails and even then they will be unable to cope with it and will need help.

rem, I think you need to fact check. The Imperial Valley might, but it's a flyspeck in comparison to the Central Valley. Try a google search on Shasta Lake, California Aquaduct, Sacramento river, American River, San Joaquin River, etc.
There will be a Jefferson State before there's a California succession, and I don't see either happening in the near future.
