Anyone else ready to go camping this spring?

I'm just waiting for it to warm up a bit more and for things to dry up after all the rain and snow we got the last few weeks.

Really looking forward to getting out into the woods. Going to try doing everything as lightweight and mobile as possible.

We were talking about this a few months ago. Donna and I use to camp all over upstate PA and NJ and Virginia. I told her I wanted to go camping and hiking with our son and his friends for my birthday in September.[^] We going to go tent camping at Ricketts Glen in Pennsylvania and hike the falls. They have over 30 waterfalls to hike and it takes about eight to ten hours to just climb down. We will have a car at the end of the hike to get back up. There are deer and bears that wonder throughout the park, so you have to be prepared and carry when camping there. This place is awesome. They also have lake Rose and Lake Jean to fish and swim in. Been going there since I was a kid.Oakie

Have a couple of trout fishing trips planed. One will be a four day canoe trip. The other will be three days by horseback.

Other than that we do not plan many camping trips for it is more of a spur of the moment thing for us. Pack the ATV/SxS and hit the trails for a weekend.

Hey Les, have you ever taken the train fishing in Elkins. I heard that they will haul you up a stream and drop you and the caboose off for as long as you want?..?

I'm hoping to wet a hook with the family sometimes this year. I have rods and reels that have never even been used, and I don't think they ever will get used at the rate I'm going.
    What's next?

Enjoyed camping as a boy and as a young man.

Am no longer drawn to sleeping in leaking tent, an air mattress that doesn't hold air, and wading through mud to take a dump behind a tree in the morning.

Can't wait. Although I no longer camp out in a tent we still consider going to the cabin as camping. Morel hunting and trout fishing, almost as good as a November rut hunt.

I camp as a necesary evil to being a skirmisher. I can't afford motels for each skirmish.

Setting up the tent in the dark, either being cold or hot pretty much every time, rain leaking in no matter how much I seal the tent (and it ALWAYS rains, EVERY time), having to use the outhouse in the middle of the night, no showers for days, plus the fun of hauling all the stuff out, packing it, unpacking it, repacking it, putting it away, only to use it again a few weeks later. Yeah...

Not to mention it does no favors on my bad back or bad neck.

I'm looking forward to the skirmishing season. The camping bit, not so much.

I mentioned camping and roughing it to my wife. She said she would make reservations at the Comfort Inn instead of a Holiday Inn.

    I am into semi-primitive camping.

(Modernized/modified version that includes clothing and some other recent inventions.)

Yes, when we first got a glimpse of blue sky since.......I don't even know when.....I have awakened from my hibernation and am ready to get out in the woods.

That's what I am trying to work my way into. Last year, I started camping again frequently for the first time since I was a kid.

"Camping" ended up becoming loading the Jeep to the gills with a bunch of junk we didn't use and pitching a tent within sight of 50 other people. It did involve drinking beer around a fire....but I can do that at the house.

This year the rule is simple: If I want to take it, I have to carry it. The goal is to be able to stay out for a week with just what I've got in my pack.

Ready to go? Boy, you have no idea!

Of all the things I've been unable to do recently, I miss camping the most.

Here's some pics to keep us going:

Waiting for the snow to clear out of the high country. Most likely be April before we can get into a lot of places.

Can't wait to try my pontoon boat in those alpine lakes.

They have Caboose camping in Durbin at Cass. The Cabooses are already set up along the track and not pulled by the train. I do not see where they are worth the $600 price tag for a three day stay.

Don't have to go camping. Live on a stream, living room is 10 feet from the stream, 30 feet from the fish pond,(200 ft diameter)with fish. Northern property line borders on the Ozark National Forest, deer, bear, wolves, coyotes, wild hogs, *, rabbits. Two hundred yard rifle range. What else could a damn yankee from Cleveland, Ohio want to round out his retirement. And a great football team to root for in the Arkansas Razorbacks. Life is good in Arkansas.

Will do. My cabin is 11 miles from there in Nordmont. I had that place since 1981. Go through central and over the mountain. Turn left and then left again at the old farm house. Turn left again and i am the first cabin on the right. I own that side of the mountain. My front porch faces Cherry grove cemetery if you know where that is. What town are you in, Dushore,Mildred,Lopez????

When you get a chance, PM your number and I will call you when I go up. Chris Streett has a place up there too. We can all meet up and do some shooting on my range. I have a 25,50,75 and 100 yard range with a shooting table and gun rack and target frames all set up. Oakie

Sold a Winnebago Vectra a few years ago when my back was at a low point. I've been looking at Class B large van campers as we miss the life.
After two winters in a 10 man tent in Korea, my wife had to drag me kicking and screaming into tent camping when our screamers were very young. The worst part of that is you have to wait till the tent dries out to pack up and move.
Maine trout, Rock Crab and salmon was great as was lobster.
What's not so great is we discovered Salmon River with its' monster trout and salmon only years after we moved south.

I fish behind the sporting goods store in Benton. We once raided the hatcheries. Lol Got just one fish for dinner. I was 19 at the time. I have our grave plots at Cherry grove. Ask your pop if he knows the Vandines. They own like half the town of Nordmont and had the general store for years. One year we went to some bar in Benton and when we got through the door we found out it was a strip club. Crazy. I still hang out at the central but the food got bad. Real bad. Any new good places to eat up there. Oakie

The camp pictures are first class!!!!!!!!!

I've gone from camping to roughing it easier by motorhome and by Foretravel to where I have to settle for a cabin somewhere next to a good fishing hole. BTW, does anyone know of such a cabin spot in Washington state where the fishing is outstanding or passable?
    What's next?

Can't wait. Backpacking, camping, hiking... all of it.
Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

I'm hoping that the roof repair on the camper held up over the winter. But yes, cant wait. No good cicada broods this year here. I really love sitting by the fire when they are in full song. Best thing I remember ever was when I was a kid we were were up near Lake Lure, NC at a friends cabin. The cicadas were in full song . The fireflies were EVERY where and seemed to be flashing in synch. Then the full moon came up over the ridge opposite where the cabin was and went into full eclipse. My parents friends had a nice telescope, It was really something to see. We have taken the kids camping for several lunar eclipses but it has never been anything like that one.

Which reminds me there will be a total eclipse of the Sun on 8/21/17 that will be right in our backyard. I need to start making plans for it......
