Waaaaaatermelon, Sweeeeeet Corn, Tomatoooos, Greeen beans, Can-ta-lope... I can still hear the old guy in his truck driving around selling produce from his truck garden. Tomatoes the size of saucers and full of sugar, nothing like todays greenhouse grown tomatos. Never did know his name.

Then there was the junkman with horse drawn wagon and cowbells calling
"I cash old clothes". He bought anything from housewives including old watches and jewelry.
The guy with the grinder truck, ground scissors, knives and fixed umbrellas.
The iceman had a horse drawn wagon packed with rectangular blocks of ice about 10x10x36" or about 125-150# / block.
He'd chip off a 10cent block with an ice pick and carry it into your apartment with ice tongs. He also carried kerosine. Kids hung around the wagon for a chip of ice. I recall the faint rainbow color of ice with kerosine on it.
Except for soda fountains and air conditioned movies, I dont think the good old days were so hot.
I actually still remember seeing a 'rag man' and his cart in downtown Philly - was
probably 1948. I can remember thinking it was funny for a grown man to collect
rags and pull them along in a pile on his 'wagon.'
"Good night mister and misses North and South America and all the ships at sea". Was that the signoff of news caster, Gabriel Heater or Walter Winchell?
