What do you think is the most respected profession, based on skill in what one does, and value to society?

This is definatly a matter of prespective question. I see we are getting real votes for clergy and I totaly respect that and think that religon is a good thing it dosent work for me. I dont have one skill or profession that I think is great, but a class. I think anyone who gives a USEFUL service to OTHERS even if it does benefit themselves. Professions like Militay, Clergy, Fire, Peace officers (not always LEO), EMS, Doctors, Teachers, and Definatly SKILLED labor they keep eveything moving. When I say even if it benefits them that is not a bad thing like it might sound. I am a Firefigher/Paramedic and I would like to say I do it for the "people", or the "comunity" ect, but I dont. I do it because it is fun to me, I have good hours, and "decent" pay, added benfits are that I get to help the "people" and "comunity" ect, and I enjoy that. If you are not doing a job that you enjoy, even if it serves others, you are not helping yourself, which you have to do before you can help others.

Respected? That's a tough one. In this age of little or no respect for anyone, it seems, as the range of answers already indicates, the field is wide open. Truth is, respected or not, ALL honorable, decent, law-abiding professions should be APPRECIATED and VALUED for their own significant, albeit different, contribution to the "greater good."

As Nunn quoted Winston Churchill, "it doesn't TAKE all kinds, there just ARE all kinds."

Well, to some degree, when it comes to contributory professions, it DOES take all kinds. And when a society runs short of some or another, the loss can be devastating. Think about it: A town with NO ____________________ (fill in the blank)

    Just my $.02 [^]

Don't forget teachers .There are some good ones out there. My son is a good kid,but he is one of these people that if it does not interest him he will not apply himself .IE school. One teacher saw the raw talent he had for music, took him under his wing and mentored him into a two time state champion . We hope three this year. He plays tuba. He also plays any instrument he picks up also.

That's not the important part though. He has to make good grades to stay in band .He loves band and puts the effort into keeping his grades up.

One teacher put him on the right track. [:o)]

    If most respected means:
-no one messes with you, baggage handlers at the airport
    -earning power, lawyer or doctor
-education and application of the academic to practical, engineer
    -most influential, probably teachers
-least paid for what they do, social workers

Myself I respect no one for a chosen occupation, while the same goes for disrespecting them, there is a difference for having a respectable job, and being a respectable person

It all depends on how they do their jobs and their attitudes.
I've seen doctors, lawyers, teachers, car mechanics, janitors and fast food workers who I respected.

I've also seen all of the above who I absolutely detested.

It seems the common thing that all of the ones I respected had was some sense of pride in their work and did their jobs to the best of their abilities.

Granted, slapping together a cheeseburger properly might not require a brainiac, yet I've still seen some folks who can't manage to put a burger, cheese, and onions, a splash of ketchup and mustard together in such a manner that it isn't slopping all over the place.

Military (George Orwell said that we sleep well in our beds at night because rough men stand ready to violence on our behalf. That quote has always stuck with me when I contemplate the men and women of the military and they have my highest regard)

I've never needed a Policeman nor a Fireman-
thank God and I rank them very high as far as respect
    and value to society.
I have needed EMT (heart attack) and they're life savers
and tops in my book ,Thank you to all, you're great!
BUT, on two occasions because of soap buildup
my septic system failed and backed up into the cellar,
I tell you ,I wanted to kiss the Septic service guy on each
occasion after he cleared the pipes,of course I'd would have drank
bleach after that and then kissed another EMT.
Everyone in this world in the "services" are extremely
important, respected and invaluable when you need them!

I don't respect the profession/occupation. That has nothing to do with respect.
The person has to earn my respect, I don't give it out card blanc.

professional sports. without it, america would be whining like babies, yet when they have it, they act like idiots on camera for thier favorite team and pay insane prices for a ticket or worship material. and the players rake in the cash. again, the wage determines the level of respect.[;)]

    housewife.

My father worked a difficult job, but my mother's job never ended. She was successfully able to get 48 hours worth of work done in a 24hr period, every day, without complaint. A true housewife / househusband (included for the times we live in) generally manages to run multiple fulltime jobs all at once. This does not include houseparents who have maids or get all the clothes drycleaned (socks included) or get takeout food every night or nannies for when they wanna go get sprayon tans and hang out with their girlfriends and gripe about how little their husbands really do.

Anyone who goes to work and supports their family without having to go on the public dole has my full respect. I don't care if they dig ditches or negotiate billion dollar deals, as long as they are willing to do their job.

They have all the money in the world which they have earned by being so important and knowledgable, they are worshipped by almost every housewife and teenager ever born, they are more popular than ANY fireman, policeman, clergyman on earth... That can't possibly be without reason now can it?? Come ON now America..We know where our heroes are...
