A Birmingham Officer ran my daughter off the road!

She is fine...but very "shook up." I couldn't have been more upset and just completely lost it watching it all happen about 3 cars ahead of me. I actually CHASED her down and yelled at her from my car!!! She tried flashing her lights and rolling her window down so I could see her IN UNIFORM. You think that stopped me from chewing her out and letting her know if she dared to pull over I would definately be willing to "talk" things over. I got her tag number and I'm getting VERY little help from the on duty officers that I spoke with....but I have made several calls to at least 6 officers that I know and they guarantee that when I see them Monday they will be VERY helpful in finding out just who this nut job is and helping me so that I can file a formal complaint.

What happened:
We had left the store as a group and altogether we had 4 cars and one motorcycle in our little convoy. I'm still very nervous about her driving, so I followed behind her while on the freeway. We were leaving I-65 and on the ramp that leads to I-59. It is a two lane ramp that merges into one lane. We were all in the right lane and the left lane was nearly at it's end when TWO cars came up driving way faster than everyone. I had a sinking feeling when they went by because she was up ahead and their lane was ending to our left. I saw them coming over....just coming over.....MY DAUGHTER IS SWIRVING LEFT AND RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME AND LEAVING THE ROAD!!!! We all nearly stopped and she got back into traffic, but I was pissed. This is when I stomped on it and came around everyone. (Yes, I happened to be in the 67 Camaro and I wasn't letting this go...no matter what.)

I am not happy with just making some calls. I'm going to track this witch down and give her a piece of my mind. I can tell you now this woman will know who I am before this is over and I will not be happy until I hear her apologize to my daughter.

I just got off the phone with another "we'll see what we can find out" guy. I don't think they understand that I am NOT letting this go and I will not be dulled into complacency. I asked for internal affairs phone number and I will be calling them at 8am Monday morning.

I will find out who this is.

If the female officer doesn't receive a ticket for: Speeding, improper lane change, and running a vehicle off the road, then you need to climb the ladder all the way to the top. If there is any damage to your daughters vehicle she should also be charged with leaving the scene of an accident. Since the officer was the proximate cause of your daughter having to take emergency evasive action to avoid a collision. Also when driving to and from work most departments REQUIRE that the uniform be covered.

Also everyone in your convoy should write out (while it is fresh in their minds) a little narrative of what they witnessed.

Your actions are covered as you were attempting to identify a person that was leaving the scene of an accident. And that if you didn't drive up to the suspects vehicle you wouldn't be able to identify the suspect.

    Let them chew on that.

Alpine had some good points about having folks write it down, also maybe get their information to pass along to the internal affairs department. I'm glad your daughter is allright and no one was hurt. Those roads can be vicious sometimes.

Glad your daughter is ok. Hope the car wasn't hurt any too.

Every once in a while I am amazed at how some officers were allowed to drive a squad car. Really give the rest of the police force a bad name.

Sounds like she was in her personal car and off duty. But, I may have misunderstood.

no you read it quite correctly [;)]
I mean that I see officers in a police car being careless on the road. But its usually the same lamebrain thing that 50% of drivers do (like no turn signals in lane change, etc.)

    Glad your daughter is OK.
    My opinion.
Write down all the details of the incident.
Get everyone else in convoy to write their version. They should not all match perfectly. Everybody has a different perspective.
    You then have corroborating statements.
Give them to police department. Ask for proper process.
If nothing happens they will make a nice package for the local paper.
You may even drop that hint if you are not feeling the love of the department.
Don't forget to discuss with your daughter the role that considerable experience plays in driving safely.
    Good luck.

Most fun I ever had was when I pulled up next to a local police at a red light. I rolled down my window and motioned for him to do the same. He did, and I told him he needed to put his seat belt on. He flenched and grabbed it to snap it on. I told him if he ever caught me without mine, I would appreciate the same warning. He smiled and drove away.[;)]

Sort of had the same thing happen to me but with much different outcome.

I pulled over to let an Officer by with his lights on, the car behind him no light and unmarked cut me off as I tried to get back on the road. Big mistake by him, I was in my 73 Chev 3/4 T truck an old beater with about 400 Hp. I did not move let him make the evasive move. Of Backing off. Then the idiot turns on his lights. So I pulled over like I should. He goes by pointing his finger at me like he was scolding me or something.

So I showed him what I thought his IQ was. Think he knew he was in the wrong cause he kept going.

Glad she was not hurt or anything.

Here is my letter to Internal Affairs that I have ready....

Today at approximately 6:30 pm my 16 year old daughter was run off the road. I believe this was done by a female Birmingham Police officer. We were driving in a "convoy" of 5 cars down I-65 and we were turning onto I-59. In the line of cars that were in our group I was behind my daughter and she was following the lead driver because she is a new driver and we were concerned about her driving on the freeway. The on ramp to I-59 is a two lane rd and it merges into a one lane with the right lane having the right of way. I was VERY concerned when I saw two silver cars driving in the left lane at a higher rate of speed than anyone else...when their lane was ending and my daughter was directly ahead.

The second of the two started coming over directly into the lane where my daughter was. She didn't slow down or even try to fit in with the cars...she just ran my daughter OFF the road. My daughter swerved and almost fishtailed as she left the road. We all slowed way down and my daughter came back into traffic. Everyone was shook up and confused by what happened...but being her mother I was infuriated. I wanted this person's tag number and I sped up to get it.

When I caught up to this person they turned on lights that turned the turn signals of the car into "strobes" (letting me know it was a police car.) I didn't care at this time and wanted answers. I really wanted this person to pull over so I could get information. I pulled up to the driver's side..and the driver rolled down the window. This is when I noticed an African American female driving in a uniform. The uniform was the same dark blue as the Birmingham officers that I know..so I am guessing that it was a Birmingham officer.

I yelled over to the woman..."YOU RAN MY DAUGHTER OFF THE ROAD!!!" The "officer" said back."she almost ran into me." Obviously an uncaring, self absorbed, unsafe, reckless, person we are dealing with here is what came to mind. I want to know that if Birmingham is going to put a person behind the wheel and give them power to enforce the law as an officer that this same person isn't going to nearly kill my daughter without a second thought. I want answers. I don't want to be "shirked" off like I have been when I called 911 following this person @ 90+ mph following them down the freeway..please check the recordings I tried to get help at the time this happened. I am a HUGE supporter of law enforcement. I have been in firearm sales for many years and know many officers personally. I would never be one to cause any police officer grief...but this person was very unsafe and my daughter could have been killed because of it.

The tag number of the car is 1C8862G.. silver Ford Taurus and even if this specific car isn't registered to a specific officer I suspect there is a way to find out WHO this is. Between 6:30 pm and 7:00 pm (when 911 was called) there was a black female officer driving this car and I have several witnesses, along with myself and we need to know who this is so we can file a complaint. I followed her as far as the Gardendale exit, where she turned toward Cracker Barrel and I let it go since I wasn't getting any help from the 911 operator and the driver I was following was driving so unsafe trying to get away from me.

(**included personal contact info for myself and other witnesses**)

I would remove the "african american" and the "black" descriptions if it were me.

I know you're only describing her but I think female would be enough description.

Didn't you have some sort of "convoy" event while going home, a couple of years ago??

I suggest the references to her race be removed, and also your confession of doing 90 MPH. I think that that could earn you a "Careless and Reckless Operation" ticket.

    Glad your Baby is OK.

    Good advice.
Especially given that you are in Alabama, when the supervisor reads those three words, you will be labeled as a "cracker" and your complaint goes in the trash.

You are right to be outraged and to take this as far as you can. Similar thing happened to me as I was following my wife and 4 year old daughter, me in my car and wife and daughter in theirs. I complained to the police department (Corralles, N.M.) and the city council. I had a meeting with the police chief and the offending Latino female police officer. Officer told her story and I told mine. Mine was more believeable and I think the officer got fired.

It is sad we have to be oh so careful and not mention the person's race (well, unless it is a black person complaining about a white). The race is just one of the pertinent facts of the case in an effort to easily, quickly and correctly indentify the suspected officer. If she had green skin I am sure it would be OK to mention that, but not brown or black skin.

When I was a truck driver in CA a CHP cruiser blew a red light and I jack-knifed the rig doing many thousands of dollars in damage after swerving to avoid killing the officer in a T-bone crash. He was doing about 50 in a 35 with no lights or siren and screamed right through a red light. He never stopped.

Along with the fire truck (they responded due to fuel spill) came a CHP supervisor who took my statement. Last I heard from or about anyone.

Then about 2-3 years ago Bill Clinton was in town and his 2-car motorcade came flying down the freeway on-ramp at about 90 MPH and ran me off onto the shoulder. Maybe somebody would have noticed had I been killed, but otherwise, no.

This was an officer in her own car? Speeding and driving unsafely? Then file a report. Teach your daughter to be aware of reckless drivers coming up from behind and learn to be more defensive in getting out of their way. About all you can do.

I'm hoping that the transportation dept. cameras caught it all. I plan on asking when I go to file my complaint Monday. The race issue means nothing in this. My description of the driver is only to help them find who this person is and the fact that she was black has no "play" in my feelings. When I went after the car that ran her off the road I thought I was as mad as I possibly could be....but when I saw the uniform and the lights came on in that car showing that this was NOT an average person I was nearly livid.

seems to me that the car was swerving to miss one of those IDIOTS that just have to go like hell as a 2-to-1 lane change is approaching, thus crowding the car on the right. (Iget it every day....occaisionally, i let them in....) Barney fifette was in the wrong, and yeah, I would have chased them down too...(obviously the patrol car was travelling at a high rate of speed as well, and wasn't on a call as there were no lights or sirens goin).

I have no problem getting out of the truck at the next light and telling any of the myriads of dummies that pull any number of retarded manuevers around my equipment that on lifes great high way, they should have taken the bus......(and if you read ruger270's post, you'll see once, i was one of the 'idiots')

Perhaps you read a completely different story than I read. But then reading reports was what I did for a living for 20 years. So I'm gonna take a stab at your version and say you might have a reading problem.

And by the way, if a crime occurs right in front of you (and this of course assumes that you actually know what a crime is) you may try to identify the suspect, and if you really have a set, apprehend the suspect.
And we will not even go there on your spelling and grammar errors. Communication does not appear to be your forte.

It's ALWAYS a bad idea to chase down the idiots who wronged you on the highway for anything beyond getting their license plate number. People who drive that stupid are often road ragers who are very capable of extreme acts of violence. Why put yourself in the position of either having to take someone elses life or risk your own over something as stupid as being cut off.
