Wax Ring? UPDATE

Smitty500magSmitty500mag Member Posts: 13,623 ✭✭✭✭
edited August 2015 in General Discussion
I'm getting ready to install my new toilet and I went to pick up a new wax ring and new anchor bolts etc. and while at Home Depot I saw this Fluidmaster not wax ring. I've used other products that Fluidmaster makes and never had any problems with them. Anyway I bought one plus I bought a regular wax ring just in case I decide not to use the Fluidmaster.

So what is your guys opinion. A Fluidmaster better than wax or the old standard wax ring?

Did some reading and found something that might make your install job easier with the waxless seal.

Attach to the bottom of the toilet first as opposed to trying to fit the toilet to the seal.

Here is a link with a picture and some ideas both pro and con in regards to the waxless seal.

I've never seen them before, but it has to be better than the nasty, sticky wax seal [xx(] Please do let us know how it works for you.

    Here's how to tell.

If you toilet is not mounted tight, or has a wobble or uneven floor base, use the silicone ring. It will bounce back.

If it's solid and bolts down tight, the wax ring is fine and you may choose either.

Bees wax is great for toilets and for Black Powder shooters, I used a wax ring for both purposes [;)] The new style ring should be good for your toilet though, which ever you decide on just make sure you seal it correctly, wax is easy to crimp/smash when re-setting the toilet.

If it's not broke, don't fix it. How long have we all been using wax without a problem. I will stick to the wax ring. We change hoppers what, like once every 15 to 20 years?????

I have only used one fluid master at it was in the last three years. I don't mind installing wax rings, getting the old one off is yucky though. I use tongue depressors.

TIP: Put a couple of straws on the bolts when setting the toilet over the wax seal it will help you guide the toilet over the bolt holes.
Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!

Thanks, that sounds like a great idea. I was dreading trying to line those dang things up. That'll be a great help on the old back. I'm sure my wife will appreciate that too since it'll probably cut down on the cussing. [:)]

I have used three or four Fluidmaster's for installs and two Korky's.

I have never heard of any problems with the Korky. Have saw one Fluidmaster that leak.

Here is my Question with jumping in and using foam/rubber. How will it hold up to the chemicals and such in the long run? Wax is a proven thing and has been used for many many years with no problems. The new ones who knows?

If the toilet moves, it needs to be shimmed before being calked.

    Rocks, never
Leaves, on occasion when out hunting.
    Fingers, I ain't going there
Corncobs.. Hot damn, corncobs are more efficient than anything I ever used. They get traction that Charmin can only dream about.

If you've never gotten up close and personal with corncobs, you just ain't country.

If a toilet wobbles, you can set the bowl in cement or grout. Wait a day, then set the tank.

Or shim the bowl with coins, then push grout around the perimeter of the bowl.

I just checked the tracking number and my new toilet will be delivered tomorrow between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM.
I'm leaning toward the Fluidmaster. At least if it don't work I can lift the toilet back up without making a mess and put the wax ring on it.

I hope that helps you relax. [:)]

There are shims for wobbly toilets. I found this out 5 years or so after I reset a toilet in my basement. Lowes had them over by where they had the toilets displayed. They always had them, I just never asked. By the way, you can stack wax rings if your flange is lower than the floor. Just get one without the inner plastic thing. Any more trouble and I'll try that silicone ring.

Use a "Double Wax" Ring With Cone, Seat it Right put You Big ol Butt Right On it And Load It Up Right With A Good Ol Fashioned Rotation Of the glutemus Maximus
Til Shes Packed Down (Seated) And Tighten the Bolts
Do not Ever Caulk Around a Toilet It Will Only hide a leak if it Does Develope Then Rot Your Floor............

A customer gave me an imported English toilet once.

In America, the flange sits on the finished floor. In England, at least with this toilet, the flange has to be flush with the finished floor. Dang! Found out after the flange was already installed!

    UPDATE:

As with everything I do it always gets complicated. What is it now you might ask?

Well the idiots sent 2 different colors. The toilet bowl is white which is what I ordered but the tank is a tan color. The boxes were marked correctly so it's not the sellers fault. Some numb scull at the factory evidently put the tank in the wrong box. It's no wonder that companies go out of business these days. The younger generation can't do $#!+ unless they've got that damn I Phone stuck up their *!![:(!]
