What I think he should have done.....

Taken the gun back to the store and TELL them it is NOT a return! He should go through the appeals paperwork (which they should know all about) and tell the dealer that they WILL be giving the gun back....so keep it safe. Don't think for one minute that you want to dink around with the ATF when it comes to what just what power they have. Anoyone who thinks they won't come to your house....and take every stinking gun, destroy them, and not ever have to answer for a dang thing they have done is just kidding themselves. ALWAYS....ALWAYS....ALWAYS....handle this kind of business yourself and don't wait on "them" to get the ball rolling. It gives them ALL the power to handle it how they see fit.

He did tell them to hold it. He didn't take money back, he is just not going to play games with them. It will be straightened out, and he will get his pistol back.

That is really the only way to handle it. He shouldn't think of it as a bad thing. It is in a safe place. He is going to find out what the problem is....and no bad will come of it. Maybe it is something as silly as an unpaid ticket that he didn't even know about.
