Pledge of Allegiance

Most children growing up in the US memorize the Pledge of Allegiance. But, in one Oregon elementary school, the kids won't be allowed to recite it at an end of the year assembly.
The principal banned it that day so as not to offend Muslims.
One resident of Portland, Oregon was a little surprised when she received an e-mail from her stepson's school principal.
The e-mail said that the children would not be reciting the pledge because of its reference to God.
Instead, the students would memorize and sing the Preamble to the United States Constitution.
But it's not just non-Muslims who were offended.
At least one Muslim community leader says he feels the same way. Muhammad Najieb says that 'God'
is central to the Muslim faith, and there are several references to him in
every prayer.
Portland school officials say the principal was trying to be sensitive, but some Muslims say the ban caused hurt feelings, and may foster bitterness and division within the community.

For the forseeable future, yes.
Can we ban them?
Muslims offend me
Can we ban them?
Now you are starting to sound like Z-lu Hitler.[:o)]
you can't have tolerance and ban one thing for another group if there against it, that why its called tolerance. if I have to watch them pray, then can sure listen to the pledge.
Well that offends me.
Now you are starting to sound like Z-lu Hitler.[:o)]
You just don't understand my rapier-like wit [8D]
Thats what we should be loyal to! NOT just made up entity that means NOTHING to most people!
Maybe if we learned more about the constitution, more people would FOLLOW IT?????????????
We had to memorize the preamble when I was in the fifth or sixth grade. I wonder how many kids have to do that now?
Merc
bleen the muslims!
I Pledge Allegiance to the Flag of the United States
of America, and to the Republic for which it Stands:
One Nation under GOD, Indivisible, with Liberty &
Justice for ALL.
This is the way I say it.
Maybe the kids will get together, stand up, put their hands on their hearts, and say it anyway. Let's see what happens if they try to suspend them for saying the pledge. If I was one of the parents, I would come in myself and say it. Probably have most of the crowd joining you by the end.
No way the state of Oregon is mostly sheep. Way to PC for me. Love the country and some of the folk here. But those are in the Minority.
Here's her e-mail address if you'd like to send her a message: pwilson@pps.k12.or.us
This is the e-mail Ms. Wilson sent to the parents:
"The Pledge contains the words, 'under God' and we have many Muslim families here. So out of respect for the diversity of religious faiths practiced by our school community (parents and families) we decided that this year the students would memorize and sing the Preamble to the Constitution. At the rehearsal on Friday they did it from memory and to a wonderful song. It was very joyful and unique. I think you, and other parents, will really appreciate the creative and new way to open the program."
The principle is an ignorant * though.[}:)][:(!]
The last time I checked, people could pray, curse, mumble, talk bad about their neighbor, and even lie if they wanted to. Also, outside of church, they could even recite the Pledge of Alligiance anytime they wanted. How many of you have recited the Pledge in church? Anybody? You can do it the whole sermon if you want! [;)]

I've done most of the things you mention. I don't recall ever talking bad about my neighbors, but I've talked bad to my neighbors if that counts.
We recite the pledge of allegiance at my church at times. On some occasions we have the JROTC post Colors.
What does any of that have to do with not letting the little crumb crunchers recite the pledge for fear of offending a little rag head?

Yeah, I do. I am just naturally a smartass.[8)]

When I was younger my church said the Pledge every sunday.
I haven't been in years, don't know if they still do
On that day we consider what offends them regarding the use of "God".

If a Muslim is offended by the pledge of allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, it's not the reference to God that offends him.
F&@K MUSLIMS
If they don't like it here, go the f&@k home.
Just what I was thinking. I know many people who are pagan and worship the goddess. Net none of these people are offended, and do say the pledge. So whats up with these F##king mudslimes anyway. What, all pledges must be to allah.

You ma'm are an idiot. If the Pledge to the flag offends someone, who cares. They came over to this country to partake of our freedoms. If they don't like it they are more than welcome to go right back.

Here's the response I got:
Mr. Weathers,
Thank you for taking the time to write regarding the fifth-grade promotion ceremony at Capitol Hill Elementary School. The report last night on the O'Reilly Factor was inaccurate. I want to assure you that students at Capitol Hill, and all of our schools, routinely recite the Pledge of Allegiance and will continue to do so.
Capitol Hill Elementary School serves students with a rich diversity of beliefs, and we know that some students do not fully participate in the recital of the Pledge. The Principal made the mistake of singling out Muslims in her e-mail reply to a parent. Her answer was a quick one, not the full one. At Capitol Hill we have children from many belief systems who do not fully participate in the Pledge, some of those students are Muslim.
As a way to both honor our country and encourage full participation, staff at Capitol Hill opted to have fifth-grade students recite - in song -- the Preamble to the Constitution at a year-end celebration. As the document this great country of ours is founded on, the Preamble is a fitting text to recite as a show of respect and patriotism.
The principal of Capitol Hill Elementary has not removed the Pledge from the school, nor has she altered its wording in any way. As stated before, students will continue to recite the Pledge of Allegiance at Capitol Hill Elementary School.
Schools in our district have the freedom to structure their year-end celebrations for fifth graders. Some sing, others hand out awards, and some do little more than line the hallways as the outgoing class exits the building for the last time. We will continue providing our schools an appropriate degree of flexibility to decide how best to celebrate the accomplishments of our students.

When you boil it down to plain English, what he says is she didn't delete the pledge of allegiance from the ceremony, all she did was delete the pledge of allegiance from the ceremony.
These people should be politicians.
Not a bad form letter eMail. I guess that's why he carries the impressive title of Communications and Community Engagement.
