COWPENS, S.C. -- A Cowpens man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after admitting he spit on an officer who was trying to arrest him.
Prosecutors said 33-year-old Bobby Mathis was sentenced Friday after pleading guilty to transferring * fluids and resisting arrest.
Investigators said police responded to Mathis' home after a disturbance was reported in November. When an officer arrived, police say Mathis came out of the home screaming and spit on the officer who tried to arrest him. The officer had to use pepper spray to arrest Mathis.
Prosecutors say the officer was not hurt during the scuffle.
Prosecutors say Mathis has convictions that date back to 1997 including inhaling hydrocarbons, grand larceny and public disorderly conduct.
It wasn't known if Mathis had an attorney.

It's just as illegal to spit on a prison guard, and he can and will be prosecuted for crimes committed inside.
If someone spits on me, I am going to whip his * harder than you will, and I will use a keyboard and a pen.
But that takes all the fun out of it......But I guess you will get in less trouble than me also..[;)]
Maybe I am just weird, but I would much rather see that feller standing in front of a judge, hearing very bad news, than to have to take him to the ER to get him stitched up.
True and less paperwork in the end probably

How about first the pepper spray, then the stitches, then stand in front of the judge.
Some folks is like an animal, you let too much time pass between the time of the crime and the punishment and they forget why they are being punished.
Nah! He will be spitting on Prison guards for a while...[:(]
Maybe, but what will happen to him if he does is horrifying indeed. I'm not saying he didn't deserve the 10 years. With a record of convictions, the man sure isn't learning his lesson. At the same time, and this may be very necessary to maintain control, what happens to people who misbehave in prison is often very brutal. I am friends with the guy who runs the local juvenile detention center. He's a very good man, and he works very hard to keep his staff professional, well trained, and disciplined. He even does trainings around the country. I once asked him what happens when he's not there and when the video cameras aren't turned on. "I've studied that very question for many years," he said, "and I'm sure it's not pretty."
Life goes on...
Inhaling hydrocarbons!?
huffing gas
If he has hepatitis or is HIV positive I can see him getting 10 years or more.
Cant a person be legally charged with Attempted murder if they sling * fluids or have sex if they are infected with AIDES or something like that?
[:D][:D][:D] He just shouldn't have done it, that's all. [:D][:D][:D]

You're most likely right. When I worked at Mecklenburg we had inmates whose original sentence was five years of less who had been inside for more than twenty years.

True, but I shouldn't fart in Wal-Mart either. If I let one slip, should I go to jail?
What if the police who get spit on are not "just doing their jobs?"

About a million years ago, I played the "what if..." game just about every time we had a family get-together. I don't play anymore.

SC isn't any fascist police state. The moron was a three time loser and it was his choice to make the big mistake. Judge just made the publics problem go away. He might be out in 6 or 7 yrs. Money says he will be back in the system again someday.
My point is some dont give a damn what happens.. I know a dude that thinks he is a bad *,, Doesnt want to follow the rules, been in prison most of his life, His outlook is "What are they going to do? Put me in prison"" These type people never learn and they couldnt care less..
He's an example of the 10% of the population who are responsible for 90% of our crime. That azzwipe in the OP sounds to be cut from the same cloth.
There comes a time when you have to just face facts and keep these types locked away from all the decent people in the world. Glad to see the judge in this case has a pair.
if you just spray a little saliva at someone, it's 1-3 yrs.
3-5 if you're contagious.
now, if you hock up a big lugey and it hits the guy in the mouth or eye, that's 10 years wether
you're contagious or not.[xx(]
