New Kimber 45 blew up on me today Pictures

Not a happy camper right now. This is my new Kimber crimson pro carry II that I just bought. I have exactly 18 rounds through it before it decided to cut loose in my hand. The one part flew up under my shooting glasses and hit me in the eye. Hands is a little sore but nothing to worry about. Could only find on part of it. This POS is going back to Kimber asap with a nasty letter. Oakie.

    Kimber = overpriced MIM parts

Good luck dealing with their customer service...

    Better buy a Glock!

Damn, that sucks. Go with Wilson Combat next time if you're gonna drop that kind of coin on a 1911.

Do tell Oakie, give us the particulars of the incident? Any damage on the inside of the pistol?

Do you have the spent casing and was it a reload, if so do you have a pic ???.? Had the round that blew been cycled through the gun several times.

    +1

    What ammo were you using?

I am glad you are ok but having a gun go kAboom is not fun and will make you gunshy. Get back on the horse and shoot something else.

    slide stop/release
    firing pin stop
    thumb safety
    extractor
    mainspring housing

those parts should never be compromised by using MIM or plastic parts EVER Kimber uses mim and check your mainspring housing its probably plastic

Kimber made a fantastic gun before the KimberII, good parts great machining, they made a big name for themselves, in 05 they wanted a goal of 5,000 guns a week {they hit it}, cut the warranty from lifetime to one year , send out crap those that find it in the first year we will fix it

I have seen almost every part I listed fail on a Kimber, one mainspring housing literally break and fall out of the gun

your lucky you where not speed shooting, and send out another round

another example of a good company going into Business Putting out a great product and then going to buying cheap parts from the lowest bidder useing The cheapest way of producing parts other than POT METAL

I don't think that Oakie reloads. I don't recall any of his post relating to reloading. I may be mistaken though.

Oakie, guess it really doesn't matter on round count, but I thought you guys shot the heck out of it back in march. Is the 18 rounds just today or total for the gun?

I don't reload 45's yet. This was factory S&W ammo. I shot a couple of mags through it back when I got it in March. This was the second time I shot it and only got two full mags through it today. On the third mag, second round, it when Kaboom. It is going back and if I don't get total satisfaction, I will be calling my lawyer. They are going to pay any cost incurred as far as shipping and replacement. If it cost me one penny, I will call my lawyer. I f'in pissed. I really like the feel and the way it shoots, but not the fact that it came apart. All I read were good reviews on this gun. I have to go back and look at some more now. I will let you all know how the phone calls go tomorrow. I didn't look to see if any other parts were damaged, I was more concerned with counting fingers and seeing if my eye was still there. After the explosion, I dropped right to my knee and grabbed my eye. I told Chris to look at me eye. He said it was fine. I think I just scratched it. I told him to pick up the guns and stuff and drive me home. I couldn't see out of my eye to drive. It is perfectly fine now, just real irritated. Fingers are all there so I can flip of PA drivers tomorrow on the AC expressway, so I guess all is not bad.[:D][:D][:D][:D][:D] Oakie

Save everything. Unused ammo, the box, casings that were fired through it, everything.

I see the broken slide lock, what else broke?

I can also clearly see the cast parts. Pretty pricey gun to use cast parts. Call me old fashioned but I still like forged parts. I don't give a damn how long they argue that cast is just as strong.

Glad to hear that you are ok. I had big issues with one of their Ultra-Raptors. Biggest POS, other than the GM vehicles, that I have ever owned. Good luck dealing with them, worst customer service ever. They will expect you to eat the cost of freight too.

After they fix or replace that POS for you sell it and get yourself a Colt.

My SIGs, Desert Eagle, GIRSAN, and other 1911s have been flawless after initial break in....I'm really sorry, Oakie!

I have broken the hammer on my GIRSAN...but not catastrophically!

I have always shied away from Kimbers due to price...I could never see WHY they were so expensive.

I hope you will let us know what Kimber says when they reply to you.

    Stay safe!

    WOW! That is horrible!

I am so sorry this happened to you!

I do wonder if the ammo might be to blame??? I don't recall anyone ever having something like this happen before.....so MAYBE...just MAYBE the loads were incorrect???

I don't know.....I'd be mad at EVERYONE if it happened to me.

I'm VERY glad you are ok.

They say that people that have this sort of thing happen sometimes get "shell shock" of some sort and it can affect your shooting. I would watch to see that you don't have that kind of thing happen. People flinch a little when pulling the trigger...can't get a steady shot off. I don't know what is done...but its something to watch for.

I don't think it was the ammo. he would have had internal damage like ruptured chamber, gas/fouling in that area and coming in thru the firing pin hole, and he could tell by a split/blown case and/or popped out primer.

this must have happened after the bullet left the barrel. then the slide stop broke.

I was an RSO for 7 years and the number one fail pistol was Kimbers.

Glock ranks number two for fails but a lot of people shoot those so I would have to believe on a scale that is not representative in a fair way

I had an original Kimber 5" and it was flawless and I may try and buy it back but I have no desire to have any "newer" Kimber, just not up to standards IMO

Hope your eye is OK and you get treated fairly by Kimber but I won't be holding my breath.

Failures at the range and calls to them were rarely satisfactory.
With new guns they would always ask round count and state do not call back until at least 250 rounds break in.

Sig says of their 1911s they require no break in period and none of my Sig 1911s have had a problem from round one

In the last 3 years, I've had 2 customers send back Kimbers for basically the same reason yours failed. Fortunatly, they both discovered the problem before they went kaboom.

OKAY, I KNOW I AM GOING TO TAKE AN * BEATING FOR THIS ONE FROM YOU GUYS[;)]. It was not S&W ammo, it was (Speer Lawman ammo in 45.) The other stuff i was shooting all day was S&W. Here is a picture of the ammo. I also kept the empty cases, made a video of the gun and ammo and documented every thing from the time, date and two witnesses.Bring on the lawyers[:D]. Oakie.

Just buy another part and install it. I would see if another model interchanged with it... Colt or S&W.
