    Over weight?

    This one.

Gonna play the victim card because if someone would have been truthfull this situation would have been avoided.

I can legally scale 48,000# on the trailer and be right at 80,000# gross vehicle weight.

When I pick up a load I always ask about the weight, depending in what it is dictates whether or not I go spend $11.50 to weigh the truck.

    Maximum weights;
    Steer axle - 12,000#
    Drive axle - 34,000#
    Closed tandem trailer 34,000#

    Or a 10' spread - 40,000#

I pull a 10' spread so my legal weights are

    Steer - 12,000#
    Drives - 34,000#
    Trailer - 40,000#
    Gross vehicle weight - 80,000#

So with that, if the shipper tells me the load weighs 38,000# there is no way to overload the truck if the load is spread out across the trailer. Load of lumber, 50' long on a 53' trailer weighing 38,000#, good to go!! Strap, tarp, roll!

I had to go to Maine on Friday to get this lumber after the New Hampsuh load canceled, loaded in the middle of nowhere and shipper did not have a scale. Loaded late Friday afternoon, hit I-95 and went to bed (Bahstun rush hour ahead, nitey nite) woke up and ran Saturday, truck does not feel heavy, pulls good, handles good and there are no signs of being heavy.

Made it all the way to the IL/ IA state line, went into IL weigh station and that was that.
    Gross vehicle weight, 82,620# [:(!]

Yep, shoulda weighed it but the shipper claimed a load of 38,000# and the truck does not feel heavy so I didn't weigh it. Going by my empty weights from before that put roughly 51,000# on me and are paying to ship 38,000#.

Ultimately my fault, shoulda weighed it. That mistake just cost me $555.00 and am waiting on another truck so we can move by hand a full bundle of lumber[:(!][:(!][:(!]

Needless to say, I am fit to be tied. I eff'ed up, shipper lied and the revenue ranger had that ticket wrote before I got parked. I'm pissed

I called the lumber mill and asked about the weight, they gave me the exact weight on thier paperwork. I asked him if it could be off a bit, he said no way that could happen, I asked him why this load weighs 51,000 but he tells me 38,000? No answer, I asked if they weigh the lumber, he said no. I asked where do you come up with the weights? Get this, he said they go by wjat other truckers who have hauled it tells them! You gotta be farkin kidding me!! He then said, it's your job to verify. I replied with, when you tell me 38,000 I shouldn't need to!

Oh well, once I get weights tomorrow there will be some answering to do since this stuff pays by weight, going to file a complaint, may not get my fine money back but they will be monitored for overweights, lying about weights to obtain lower shipping costs, the brokers regulatory folks may have some fun with this.

I worked for two years, somewhat recently as a heavy equipment operator at a sawmill.

We had a chart, that showed what different types of lumber weighed per board foot. We loaded accordingly. Being off by the amount you describe is no accident.

Our mill always paid any overweight fees the trucker might incur, due to our oversight.

    Just saying.

Even if the moisture content were higher than normal there is no way it would be that far off.

I loaded hundreds of trucks while working at a mill here in NY. I had to figure weights by board feet and type of lumber. No rocket science there!

Is that a southern violation???[:D] Seriously, I would be going ballistic on someone and somebody would be paying, or not getting their lumber. Lonnie, break their balls to the ends of the earth. That's over a 25% mistake based on the actual weight or over a 34% mistake from stated weight. That's not a mistake, that's a lie.

Working Container Cranes, We had Electronic overloads built in. Very often, in period 1980-2003, Crane would begin a lift and stop. Then we had to go up in machinery house and manually open the brakes to ease the load back down. Afterwards, we always ran the load over our scales. Some loads approached 50 Long Tons!
