IDEAS FOR TARGETS TARGET RANGE! ???

storm6490storm6490 Member Posts: 8,010
edited May 2009 in General Discussion
I was lucky enough to have a dad that took me shooting at a really early age. He used shooting as a stress relief from work so I was always able to go plinking. We have come up with some good ones in the past but I have a mental block on target ideas. I've done everything from coke bottles on top of a sutdebaker to explosives at long range.

Any ideas on what to use or create for targets? I need something inspiring.

Any suggestions you may have would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
Nick

remote control car or truck with ballons tied to them. ( cheaper shooting the balloons then the cars) but he if you can afford it shoot the cars. My son and i do this all the time. He runs the car and i shoot the moving balloons. Very good practice.

With 22s just plain soda crackers, no clean up and no mess kids love to shoot and watch them fly apart and it won't break the bank. Straighten out a close hanger and stick in ground and put soda cans on it. Movement that is fun and safe.

yeah in 1979. looking back at it, we probably should have restored it.. it was a barn yard junker crashed on the rear end... paint was completely burned off. good metal and chrome..

Not sure what it is about them, but I think it would be bad luck to shoot the ravens we have here.

Pick up a pile of those free America Online CD's. They make great targets either hanging on a line using clothes pins or stand them up in a slotted board.

A 2X4 with a slot cut to fit clay pigeons standing on edge into it. You hit them they explode. I have a piece of well casing that is 2' long and 16" diameter hanging from a tree by a cable. Makes a nice gong sound when you hit it with a Encore in 45-70 15" barrel or 375 JDJ 14" barrel at 200 yards. I also like taking all kinds of bottles with lids and filling them with water and watching them explode when a 204 Ruger hits them. Crows and yotes make great targets too. Balloons floating in the breeze are fun also.

Hire some mexicans to hold matches between their teeth, try to light the matches. be sure to take a couple boxes of matches and some extra holders.

Used bowling pins are good. You can get them at any bowling alley for cheap. I pay about $5.00 a dozen. Just drill a pilot hole in the top, run a eye bolt in, attach some cable and hang on fence wire or in a tree. They last a long time with .22LR but not so much with .45

we used to use old discs of of farm equipment, it was curved so it would kinda deflect the bullet away from ya, and it made a heck of a BONG sound when hit. we used them quite a bit in 4-h shooting sports when i was little.

We used to take I-beams and cut them up into various widths, and paint them white, orange or whatever. They make durable metal targets. Used bowling pins are cool if you know the owner of the bowling alley. Sometimes for free or he might sell them for cheap.

Take a half dozen golf balls and throw them out in front of you about 10yrds,

keep shooting with your pistol until out of range then pull out your long gun.

I enjoy it, hope it works for you.[:D]

Some where I have a DVD of targets, that by the way I got from a GB member, that has a dart board on it. I printed out several of those and we "shot darts" with our .22's.

On white paper we make tic-tac-toe boards and I play against my boys, they use .22 I use 9mm. or other cal.

    pretty fun and competitive.

Also drill Golf balls and run tie-wire through them and hang them from trees. We all drop a buck in the pot and shoot to win the pot.

I got the tic tac toe game from a friend. This is how he got his wife into shooting. She liked the competition and beating him. He had his .40 and she started w/ a .22

She now has her CCW and is an avid gun owner.

I have a pal that hip shoots alot, since this is the typical position that you would be in when drawing and responding.

He always weres vests. he keeps his .357 in his vest pocket and so he practices shooting through his vest pocket.

Amazing what an incredible shot this guys is from all of the practice hip and pocket shooting.

    Dueling tree

    http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/do-all-22-steel-roundup-dueling-tree-target.aspx?a=275781

Or just take some fishing line and tie it to the pop tab on aluminum soda cans and hang them from the trees or build a frame to hang them from. Tying an alligator clip to the end of the line makes it easier to change cans. Instant gratification when hit. They can really take a lot of hits with a .22. Your frame could be bent rebar, 2x4's, pvc pipe or whatever you can think of.

I had an "uncle",(really a close family friend and Ret. Marin Gunny Sgt.) growing up, that was a "shipwright". He lived right on the Raccoon Creek, in Bridgeport NJ. Whenever we went to visit, the .22's would always come out and we would throw blocks of wood in and shoot at them, until the tide took them away.Used to pick-off painted turtles too.
That sure brings back some memories! That had to be at least 40 years ago.
