A guy has a 1989 FXSTC and wants to trade for my 56 Willys Jeep wagon.

Is this bike any good, problems?

Several acquaintances have Harleys and ride them quite a bit (trips across USA, etc) but compared to the riders of other makes (primarily BMW and Honda) it seems the Harleys have a lot more maintenance costs. If you're getting it as a toy, that would be fine, but for serious use I look elsewhere.

    It's a buyers market.

I think you just put that in more scientific terms than MG1890 did, but he just put it in less words![;)]

Like I said, the Willys was an investment and has a very small amount of people that are willing to pay a reasonable price for it.

NADA says that the harley is worth less than the Willys, but hey are selling for 3 times as much!

Let's see pics of this wagon.

If you werent already looking for a Harley, why take one in trade.

You may want to do some googling on "fxstR.

I'm not sure the "R" designation belongs. But I'm not much of a Harley guy.

R stands for retarded because I missed a letter!

Again though, its an investment, but I may want to ride it for awhile before I sell or trade it.

Not old enough to be real collectable yet. Not new enough for a 6 speed, fuel injected, bright lights, larger engine, wider tires (better ride), ABS. Parts may be a bit scarce, 4 engine generations back.

What kind of riding you thinking about? Destination or tooling around?
    What condition is it in?

I'd guess the jeep may be worth more.

FXSTC: Softail Custom Next lowest costing HD besides a Sportster.

And what BikerBob said. You also had better hope they used Clear Gas in it.

You can buy Harleys all day, any day. Where are you going to find another Jeep like that?

    They weren't really cheap.

There were about 4-5 model families then. Think of it like this -
    Electra Glide
    Tour Glide
    Softail
    Sportster

Within each family there were variations of models, so the sportster had 2 engine sizes 883 CC and 1100 CC. Several Softail models, same engine, different features like windshield bags, front end widths, trim, heights etc.

So the Softail started new as the second up the ladder in terms of cost. Not a cheap bike, probably 10-15,000 back then, so about 10-15 acres of ground in my neighborhood back then! New ones, with 103 CI vs. 81 CI displacement, and lots of safety features and better reliability and ride probably 16- 20,000? Still not cheap, but I think if you want one you can hop into a newer one with nicer features, better part an accessory availability for not much more money than the one you are looking at.

I still wouldn't make the trade.

Thanks for the rundown BikerBob, now I am understanding why the prices and looks were so different.

For everyone that asked, here's another pic of the Wagon.

You should be able to do better than an '89 softtail for that jeep. Especially if the bike has any serious miles on it. The early EVO motors (80" which is what that is, or was stock) had cam bearing issues. No reason I can see why you couldn't end up with enough money out of the jeep to get something a little newer. The twin cam 88" is a far superior motor, even over the 103" in my opinion. But be aware that the pre-2006 versions had cam chain tensioners that needed replaced at around 30K miles, at a cost of about $600 for a set of cams/plate and tensioners and about 6 or 8 hours of your time.

And Smitty, that's a badass K model. 1955? Was it yours?

I am a Harley fan. Ridden across county, east and west, north and south. That being said, I don't have a Willys. Keep the Willys. Then of course you don't have a Harley.
