YMMV.
I use Mobil 1 extended life with Dexos. I usually get about 15 K between changes.
If you're doing all short trip driving, 10,000 out of synthetic might be pushing it.
Keep in might that the warranty on your car will probably be voided by ultra-long oil changes. Considering how expensive a new engine is and how cheap oil is, the old "I'm saving so much money by doing these ultra-long interval oil changes" doesn't really make much sense.
Say a dino oil change with cheap filter is $20. Say you drive your car for 150,000 miles. 150,000 divided by 3,000 is 50. 50 X 20 is $1,000. So $1,000 to change the oil every 3,000 miles.
Say you use a synthetic and a nice filter. That oil change is going to run you about $40. Say you change every 10,000 miles. That's 15 changes x 40 is $600. So you've voided your warranty and endangered your engine to save $400 over the life of your vehicle. Not to mention the face that pure synthetics often get consumed as the vehicle runs, and you're going to need to be topping up quite often. That cuts into your $400 savings.
96 Passat with 190k and the engine is clean
01 Passat turbo w/ 160k - no sludge - clean
5000 is easy to remember!
I change every 7500 on my 98 Mercedes which the computer tells me between 10k - 12k...but I just can't do that! 7500 works good to keep the tire rotations in check too.
Mobil 1 in my case.
I never tried them because I change to a winter grade and back again before I rack up a lot of miles.
For light duty, highway miles, auto, 7,500 or again color change, slightly dirty it is time.
Like the old saying, "You can PAY Me Now Or Pay Me Later"....
You can help that engine last many times longer just by oil changes and anti freeze changes, I also add a zinc additive for more ware resistance.
Also, don't forget the transmission at "regular" intervals, and differentials.[;)]
I would try one of the grades of Amsoil which claims "full SAPS" because it would have as much zddp as the automakers thought was wise before they started to reduce it because it poisons converters.
the service is free. But IMHO the main reason is they want you to start having service issues shortly after the warranty expires some of them ENGINE related to oil burning or bearing failures
221000 Miles
And Done Every 3K Oil is Clean[^]

Very true on modern engines, but from my own experience on equipment that has more friction related parts, camshafts, lifters, timing chains, valve guides, the valves themselves for seating, metal on metal contact, Zinc and also Lead have been used for exactly that ware resistance.
The corrosion starts if not changed at regular intervals as the oil changes also by picking up particulates and contaminates caused by the combustion process.
Additives in oil also have cleansing properties to help with keeping carbon from building up.
Funny how this very subject has parallels to the very hobby we all enjoy.[;)]
Thanks SoreShoulder[8D]
The company Son works for found that changing oil according to the "oil life indicator" was NOT conducive to long engine life.
SWEET Airstream Guvament!!
Thanks, I'm coming to you live from the spacious living quarters of this 1966 single axle. Thank god the nights are cool up north because I just had a big bowl of some kind of lobster bean soup.
Truck and jeep 5000 or once a year no matter what.
HD 3500 and twice a year.
Have you noticed how oil shops sell you Syntheti$ which is 7-10,000 oil, and then put a sticker on the windshield warning to change it at 3 months or 3,000 miles?
Yep
I'll argue that point all day long. I use synthetic for it's better cold weather start-up protection, it's better heat handling capabilities, and it's "disaster control". I've had two engines saved from destruction (one had the oil pump fail and the other had an oil filter seal blow out) due the lubrication of even a small amount of synthetic oil.
This is an opinion but it's mine and I value it.
I actually put Royal Purple in my car this last change.
Jon
I use K&N oil filters. They're good filters plus they have a hex nut on them that makes them easy to remove using a 1" socket or wrench.
I too use Mobil 1 and it varies. We are pulling a camper now through the northeast and it killed my oil at about 7000 miles. That's driving every day in mountains. The f150 has an oil sensor and sometimes it goes 10000 miles or so. 7.5 quarts of synthetic lasts a lot longer when you don't pull for 5 hours a day with it. I changed it yesterday morning in Maine. Here it is today getting a rest across lake champlaine. [8D]
Buddy, you are living the life. I remember my Boy Scout days up in Maine on a high adventure base. Some of the happiest days of my life.
I have never been able to keep aluminum looking that good.
ok NOAH we got the oil change [?] answered [^] so now tell us what kind of coating protection do you have on that air stream [:0]
I have never been able to keep aluminum looking that good.
It was stripped and polished a few years ago but we keep a wax metal protectant on it and it stays mostly in the barn. The key is keeping it sealed.
