Mike, you are spot on Sir. [^][^][:)]

Maybe that is why I have six 30-06 rifles. [:p]

I agree with all of the above.
There are many reasons I have 8-10 of them........Bolt actions, lever actions, autos, over/under, etc....
I've taken Bear, antelope, deer, Caribou, lion, eland, Kudu, and a bunch more with the 06.

I only have a M1 Garand in 30-06. Never liked the caliber for some very odd reason. I fell in love with the 308, and that has always been my choice of calibers. I have been offered many deals on 30-06 and always pass. I guess it's because my dad made me hunt with a 308, since I was 12. He only had an old Model 88 for me to deer hunt with and I have been hooked on it since. Oakie

Still, the 300 Winmag is faster, hits harder, shoots further, reloads easier, and is potentially more accurate.
That's what I call an all around, every animal cartridge.
The only critter it hasn't killed would be the Blue Whale, and only because I don't like boats (something about gun loss & canoes).

From 55 and 88 grain discarding sabot submunition accelerator rounds to 250 grain corelokts or safari solids the range of load availability is impressive...

Almost a perfect case design - the best hand loaders cartridge ever...

Will harvest any and all north American game with ease...

Certainly battle tested and stands the test of time...

Probable until recently supplanted by the diminutive .223 craze the most readily available omnipresent and ubiquitous gun shop shelf stocked ammo...

Wide range of arms offered in this chambering is hard to beat...

Easy to Find Well Researched broad scoped reloading data...

    Hatcher and Ackley approved...

Possibly one of the most wildcated cases in history...

What's not to love - the only possible real competition worth considering is the mismatched and often debated .308

I suppose for the sake of argument you could compare and contrast it's inherent merits with the 8mm mauser

    Have I missed anything???

    Mikeo

Think you mean 220 grain Corlokt.

....if I could only have one rifle, it would be a Model 70 in 30-06....but, I can have any and all ,so I don't own a 30-06....last one I owned was a Sako.... I don't target shoot,so I am a Weatherby guy!Don't particularly like a Weatherby Rifle, but love Model 70's...as far as a 308,it was designed for a semi auto rifle, not a bolt action..[;)]

I own one rifle in 30-06, it was given to me by my father for a birthday present. It's a Smith Corona 03/A3. It shoots very well. I've put probably 6000/7000 cast bullet rounds through it. I don't shoot it much anymore.
It's a nice cartridge but if I could own and shoot only one it would still be the 45/70. Dave

Not if you use a raking nose shot. That is to say set up the shot to where the bullet enters the nose at a right angle. I prefer the left nostril, don't ask me why it just tends to work best for me.[:D][:o)]quote:Originally posted by SCOUT5

The first rifles chambered for the .308 were the Model 70 and the Model 88. The 7.62x54 was based on the .308 but came along a couple years later and was designed mainly for auto loaders.

    me too

I had a 30 06 when I was a kid and it kicked like a mule back then so I liked the 308 short action and less kick better back then

moved up to the 300WSM and it is my favorite now

I'll also vote for the .30-06 as the best all around rifle cartridge ever made.

I would also feel a lot safer if I were carrying a .30-06 into battle over a .223. I wouldn't want to be shot with either caliber but the thoughts of charging into battle with .30-06 rounds flying at you instead of .223's would have to be a whole lot more terrifying to the enemy in my opinion.

Carrying 200 to 400 rounds of ammo, which would you rather carry?? (Along with all your other gear.) It is all a trade off.

It is certainly a top contender for North American hunting, though it is a cartridge I have never enjoyed shooting. I prefer 7mm Rem Mag., and usually shoot rifles with even less recoil.

I mainly collect WW1 and WW2 US Military firearms so obviously the 30-06 occupies a prominent role.

There are any number of post WW2 military rifles from other countries, however, that use the round, and though some are fairly common Mauser patterned rifles, there are other military and military style arms that are interesting. A few are the Columbian Madsen, the FN-46, and the Cobb MCR.

It was great when the CMP had M2 Ball for $ 0.25 per round. Now they are selling loose packed M2 surplus for $ 150.00 for a box of 200 rounds.
Freedom and a submissive populace cannot co-exist.

    Don't like it.

I prefer battle rifles in .308 and hunting in 7MM Rem Mag

Have you ever humped 400 rounds of 308/30-06?

And I want to see a picture of Smitty500 TRYING to carry 400 rounds of BMG since 100 rounds of 50 BMG fills ONE can. So, toting FOUR cans PLUS your rifle and gear?

Lugging just TWO cans full of 50 BMG (ONLY 35 pounds ea) through the Quigly @ Quantico will make most PLCs/OCS candidates DOR on the spot.

Uncle talked of guys in his unit that would carry 1,500 rounds into an LZ and how they would choose ammo over rations.

I like the versatility of a 30-06 when it comes to bullet selection.
All around hunting here. Give me a .308.
