Hard to argue with success. Been around for over 100 years. Fought two world wars and is still used by some military...um, groups. Apparently there is no plural for military. Best selling sporting caliber for decades (maybe the 223 has eclipsed it due to the AR15 being the most popular rifle now). The '06 will do about 98% of what 95% of shooters need to do with a rifle.

I have six rifles in 30-'06. Here's one...

My VERY FIRST self purchased Rifle was a Savage 110 in 30-06.

I've hunted every year with that rifle and still have it.

Mine too! I have a Winchester 70 in .30-06, but just got a Kimber in .308. I like them both.

Nevertheless, overall, I think the .30-06 is indeed the best rifle caliber ever.

And I want to see a picture of Smitty500 TRYING to carry 400 rounds of BMG since 100 rounds of 50 BMG fills ONE can. So, toting FOUR cans PLUS your rifle and gear?

Next time I'm charging into battle with my bayonet between my teeth carrying several belts of .50BMG across my shoulders with my Barrett M82 in hand I'll send you a photo.

It would takes several belts of something to get me charging into battle these days.

I'll also vote for the .30-06 as the best all around rifle cartridge ever made.

I would also feel a lot safer if I were carrying a .30-06 into battle over a .223. I wouldn't want to be shot with either caliber but the thoughts of charging into battle with .30-06 rounds flying at you instead of .223's would have to be a whole lot more terrifying to the enemy in my opinion.

Carrying 200 to 400 rounds of ammo, which would you rather carry?? (Along with all your other gear.) It is all a trade off.

Have you ever humped 400 rounds of 308/30-06?

Lugging just TWO cans full of 50 BMG (ONLY 35 pounds ea) through the Quigly @ Quantico will make most PLCs/OCS candidates DOR on the spot.

No. I've never carried 400 rounds of .308 or .30-.06. Hence my post.

I know what it weighs, versus the 400 rounds of 5.56 I DID carry though.

not that I am going any where [:(]
but many years ago I read a article
stated take a 30-06 you can find ammo in every corner of the world
if you loose the ammo for your pet rifle in transit or just need more the odds of finding that XXXX magnum / custom or Evan some of the common rounds for the USA you may not find them .
of course that was 40 years ago but I image it still some what true

Since 1906 its been a favorite. The 30-06 is available in grains that out range any other bullet for your application. It is therefor one of the greatest overall rounds.

30-06, could not agree more. Served me well for over six decades. One year used 180gr instead of 150gr. Big mistake, if you place bullet in wrong place you can mess up a lot of nice venison. Just my 2 cents.

I believe I could do it...

While I like the 30-06 and 45ACP, most all NATO military have the NATO equivalent of the 308, 5.56, and 9mm readily on hand.
If you're looking for opportunities to feed in the field, go with what is readily available.
